That's what makes learning languages fun. Discovering words like this one that can only be understood by exposure to the language ....and watching your videos. Great job!

I have a friend who lives in Moscow Russia and he explained "Заниматься" as being engaged in doing something.

yes, "engaged" in the sense of being busy with something I am doing right now - example: Right now, I am busy (with studying Russian)
@legaleagle2004

Yes, engaged and occupied cover this idea. "To be occupied with". "To occupy oneself with" (adding cYA) is the closest idea I found in English. Sometimes it fits perfectly, other times it works in English while not being the way we would say it. This is not looking for a good translation back and forth but simply a way to understand the scope of the word in Russian. ЗАНИМАТЬ carries that idea of being occupied with or "engaged" with something. Directing your time and attention to it. Once you undesrtand that is the idea, then you just notice that sometimes Russians use that idea to express practicing music, doing a task, or having a hobby, so the literal meaning of each of those uses comes out to "occupied with" "engaged with".

I kinda got what toy meant. In Spanish we tend to say "dedicarse/abocarse a..." which means to get down to doing something or be very involved in doing something wiyhout any distraction. Difficult to express it in English as there`s no lexical equivalent.

True. A common question we ask in Spanish is "A que te dedicas?" (what do you do) which in Russian may be "Чем ты занимаешься?"

While taking your video into my brain, it sounds to me like *заниматься* differs from 'to do' in that this word is more specifically directed towards a goal, prioritizing that activity. Requiring focus, and may be more energy than something that has become a "normal" activity. Not having to mention exactly what is being done or will be done, because that matters less in such a context where one would need focus instead or where the activity is already known.

You've missed another meaning of this word which is not related to a person's activity. It's about fire to start burn some sorta large object \ or a dawn to start at the morning (занимался пожар \ занималась заря) :)

Interesting. "I am engaged in tennising." When you say займусь (in я займусь этим) is another aspect of заниматься, do you mean in the sense of perfective/imperfective aspect? Also, in я занимаюсь теннисом, for example, the activity is in instrumental case?
@BeFluentinRussian
@BeFluentinRussian 7 жыл бұрын
1. Yes perfective-imperfective (занимаюсь-imperfective; займусь- perfective) 2. Yes, instrumental indeed.

So, Делать requires a direct object (noun in accusative case)? Also, it sounds like заниматься should include the word "continual" in any English definition or translation. What about "To be occupied with"?
@BeFluentinRussian
@BeFluentinRussian 7 жыл бұрын
1. Yes, when you say делать, you have to specify WHAT you're doing. 2. Actually "to be occupied with" is a great translation for the second meaning of being engaged in an activity (play tennis). And it will be most applicable when we describe our profession/occupation.

Is it possible to use заниматься in the sense of taking care of a pet, for example ? Or is it strictly attached to the meaning of an unfinished activity that you propose to handle ? (:
@BeFluentinRussian
@BeFluentinRussian 7 жыл бұрын
Carolina, when you take care of a pet, the word "ухаживать" is applicable. Заниматься, when it comes to pet, can have a meaning of you're training your pet. In that sense, yes taking care of it would have a translation of "заниматься".
