Rook on Amazon: amzn.to/2jYVcNV I did not mention this in the video but this is pretty important. What makes this game so fun is the fact that you are in a team yet you don’t know what cards your partner has. You CANNOT tell your partner what cards you have or give them hints. Each player plays as if they are playing alone yet their points are coupled with their partner’s. If you have someone that just cannot resist talking, make a penalty rule of either 20 or 50 points that is subtracted from the team that violates the no talking or hinting rule.

Agreed, Rook plays a lot like spades. That is a great connection! There are many variations of Rook...some people leave in the 1s and count them as 15 points. Others leave in all the cards. Rook can also be played as the lowest trump card.

When I was 9 or 10 (60 years ago) I discovered a Rook deck in a drawer in my home. At that time I did not understand bidding card games or trump cards. I could not understand the instructions and I never saw my parents playing it. Now that I have had the opportunity to watch some videos I remain confused about the bidding. I wish one of these tutorials would look at the hands and explain what the bid should be and why.

Its one thing i can struggle with while playing rook but learning what to bid varies on how many people you are playing with and whether you are playing pick partner or set partner
@psyclopsus

That’s the essence of bidding in bid games though, it’s not an exact science so there’s a bit of calculation and risk involved. Best I can explain is that it’s a sense you develop after playing a bit. Most people quickly look through their hand and try to game out the hand in advance, predicting which cards will win tricks and which will be taken, what could my partner have vs what could our opponents have etc. You start to get a sense for which cards will win tricks and which won’t, and how a hand could play out. You may have a handful of 10’s but how many 11-14 cards of that color do your opponents hold? If you have a red 10 but your opponents have the red 11, 12, 13, & 14 then there are good odds that your 10 will be taken and go to your opponents when they overtake your red 10 with one of their higher red cards. Nobody has really made a video about how to bid because no two people use the same thought process when bidding. Some count particular things as certain while others may regard them as 50/50 odds. Bidding games can get very cerebral, I have friends that will take 2 minutes to calculate their bid when we play spades

Question; if one DOES use the variation where 1s are included, and they are played in a trick with a same-suited 14, who wins the trick? The 1 or the 14? I hear the one is treated as an ace but at the same time the idea of the 1 being difficult to win for it's massive point value also makes sense.
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 7 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, there is no concrete answer for that. I guess in the beginning of the game you would just need to make sure that everyone is on the same page. Decide before gameplay, does 1 trump all or does 14... It's like playing UNO with 10 people. Before you even play you have to make sure everyone is on the same page since each player grew up playing a slightly different variation.

Why didn't the player on the top bid the highest, he would have annihilated the other players with all the 14's and all trump. Also, the way I play is with the 1's as the highest of the suit and the max bid is 200. also with 4 player the minimum bid is supposed to be 150. With such low bidding like shown in this video the winner of the bid, if gotten low enough, will easily win every time. One last thing, when you discard the 5 extra cards you get to keep those and add to your final score. I guess there are many variations to this game.

I totally get it man. This game is MEGA confusing! Took me forever to understand it but it was worth it! The game is really fun and can get pretty competitive! Let me try to explain it better... So you pick someone to go first and that first player verbally says a bid. (The minimum starting bid is 70. You cannot bid lower then that. And every bid after that needs to go up at least by 5.) For example: Player 1 says, "I bid 70". The next player says, "I bid 75". Next player says, "I will pass". Fourth player says, "I bid 85". Then the next two players pass as well. (once you say, "I pass", you can no longer bid in that round. Oh and don't forget that teammates sit across from each other and cannot see each others cards. That's important. When you say a bid you are essentially claiming that you and your teammate will earn that many points in that round. So if you have low number cards you probably don't want to bid high numbers. If you bid 90 points and your team only got 85 that means for that round you will get -90 points. If there is a chance to get so many negative points, why bother trying to win in the bidding?? If you have the highest bid, you get to decide the trump color. That color beats any other colors as you saw in the video. Being able to pick the trump color is a big advantage plus you would also get the 5 cards in the NEST. And then pick any 5 cards in your hand and put them back in the nest. (that's in the video too.) I realize this may still be confusing... The way I "mastered" it is by downloading a free app on my phone called ROOK and just kept playing over and over until I understood how it works. Perhaps you could give that a try. Good luck man!! Don't give up on the game like I did! (it laid on my shelf for a year since the instructions made no sense)

You will enjoy it! It's a really fun game. But keep in mind that your friends might play by different rules. But the concept will be the same. As for your question, each player does NOT pick a trump color. In the beginning, that is what the bidding is for. Each player is bidding for the right to pick trump color. Whoever has the highest bid, gets to choose the trump color. Hope that helps!

What “Trump color” means?
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 5 жыл бұрын
Trump color means that color is worth more than the rest of the colors for that round. So for example, if the trump color is red and two people put down a 9.. If one card is red and the other is black, the red 9 would win because red is the "trump color". I hope that makes sense..
