@@peacefrog0521 okay, thanks. As it turns out my issue in finally found was flow restriction at startup self check. I had a new roof port on and the guys pushed the top hat down on to the pipe, bottoming the hat out and thus not allowing enough flow.. I pulled it up set a coupe screws in it and furnace fire right up.

We've had a problem with our furnance for a couple of years. It intermittently will short cycle and I've cleaned the flame sensor and replaced it, and futzed with it until it eventually starts working ...without really solving the problem. I've had two different technicians from different heating companies come out and look at it with no resolution. I think they were looking for the BIG sale, not a repair. It has been extremely frustrating. Your videos have allowed me to check those things that the technicians should have checked in an effort to dianose the problems. It appears that the issue is down to the pressure switch (thanks to my 17 y.o. son checking the voltage across the two leads of the switch.) and now I can focus on that. I will be replacing the flame sensor (again) and the igniter as an update to the 25 year old furnance, and checking to make sure the flue is not obstructed. THANK YOU for explaining the basics so that I can finally solve my furnace problem.

I'm so tired of all these HVAC guys that come to your house and say you need this you need that or a new furnace.. either way it's three or four thousand dollars to fix it for $8,000 for a new furnace.. come to find out it was just a clogged hose in the pressure switch.. thanks you're the best

Just wanted to say Thank You. At -27 C with -37 C with windchill and furnace giving out, waking up with 16 C in the house in the morning is not fun. Of course this happens on Saturday morning, when most shops are closed. With your help I was able to determine that pressure switch was the culprit and was able to restore heating to the house throughout the weekend while the switch was ordered. Thank You Sir.

I've been in hvac for almost 22 years but the last 19yrs have done industrial refrigeration installs and repairs only. The company I worked for specialized in industrial chillers, ice rinks, cooling towers, large refrigerated air dryers and large commercial applications. Recently I started working for myself and the bulk of my work is residential furnace and central air. I was pretty rusty with the furnaces, forgot quite a few things, and learned how much the building codes changed in my area since I last did residential hvac work. Thanks Jay, I used your technique to make sure the pressure switch was actually the problem last winter (2021). To be technically correct, however, the little micro- or limit-switch is actually normally closed but is held open by the diaphragm until suction is applied by the inducer motor. At least for the Trane furnaces in my home. Most of my furnace issues have been due to a pressure switch problem - the switch actually failing due to the tiny amount of current causing the contacts within the switch to become dirty over time. I love the metal pressure switch housing because the pressure switch can be fixed by replacing the micro- or limit-switch instead of by replacing the whole unit. This happened this year (2022) with the other furnace in our house. Each pressure switch is over $60, replaced the switch for less than $3 - and the house is nice and warm now.

I have a 24 year old York 90+ something efficient. I had replaced the control module myself and was concerned about the availability of replacement pressure switches. Now I know that on a cold night over a weekend I can keep my family warm and safe until I find a replacement part. Thank You

You're welcome! Although I do want to mention that the pressure switch is a safety switch. So unless you know for sure that the switch itself failed, I would not leave it bypassed over a weekend. If by chance the pressure switch was only doing its job and was tripping because of a clogged or cracked heat exchanger, that can lead to a hazardous situation. (I'm referring to carbon monoxide leaking out. But everyone should have a CO detector or two for situations like that)

Your furnace is really cool 😎 Gas is better than oil. I had an oil burner in my house in Massachusetts. It made a loud bang when it started. It was a steam boiler, so it took a while to get heat out of the radiators. In the winter it cost me at least a $100 per week to heat the house to 66 degrees... And of course there was a 275 gallon take in the cellar as well. In fact I had 2 tanks, because I had a rental apartment with it’s own furnace. Before I sold the house, to move to Florida, I had to have it inspected, and low and behold they found both tanks were wet on the bottoms, meaning they had slow leaks. To sell the house I had to get new tanks installed. It cost me $4000.....I don’t miss winters.....

The last comment I posted was not to be taken as bad, I appreciate what you do and have told friends about your channel, just feel weird about jumping a pressure switch like that. I would have adviced to check draft pressure with a manometer first too get an idea of what may be causing that pressure switch not to engage. The moment I posted about was that draft pressure was -0.16"WC, removed the flue vent just to find a obstruction in there, once removed I rechecked the draft pressure and was up to -1.46"WC. I had originally tried to jump the pressure switch but the furnace rolled back, not a fun thing to experience, glad I had my hands on my test meter leads which I was using to jump it. Keep up the good quality videos and thank you for posting content in a simplified way that homeowners can understand.

Okay, thank you for explaining! I agree with you, the pressure switch should be tested. I should have talked about that more in the video. The main point of this bypass test is to simply see if the pressure switch is indeed the one that is causing the furnace not to work. If the furnace starts to work fine after the pressure switch is jumped, then you know for sure that it is a pressure switch issue and you can focus on that. I have had times where I thought it was a pressure switch problem and spent a lot of time troubleshooting it just to eventually figure out that the problem had nothing to do with the pressure switch.

I'm not any type of DIY guy or handy man who deals with these sort of problems but I like to save money especially when it comes to learning how to do short and easy fixes instead of calling on a mist often expensive repair man, mechanic, technician or appliance repair service. I believe sometimes a simple tool, a trip to a local hardware store or getting structured advice from someone like a neighbor, friend, or app like yours is the better way towards being self sufficient. Another brilliant video !! What I like most is the clear concise narration and bright sharp video. I am no longer afraid of that bogeyman in the furnace closet. What brought me to your videos is noisy inducer motor around Christmas. Within couple of weeks the furnace stopped functioning. Now the inducer motor keeps running without any noise but furnace does not start. I have a new inducer motor ordered from Amazon but it's been 3 days that's not shipped so basically we are freezing it out ! Anyway, on the topic of pressure switch, I wanted to check if everything else is functioning so I pulled out the hose and touched the port on inducer motor and did not feel the suction. So I sucked on the hose ( off course with some filter on my mouth) and heard pressure switch click. Then I quickly clamped the hose and voila ! the burner turned on and flames started. Word of caution !!!! since the inducer motor was not sucking in air through the heat exchanger, the flames just flickered around the burners. So I let go the hose pinch and furnace stopped functioning but the inducer motor kept running. Thanks for letting me share my experience. Thank you, Jay. Love your videos, just subscribed. I wanted to share that my Amana SSE-80 system was turning off after about 45 seconds and faulted with a switch-stuck-open condition (3 flashes). I checked the tube between the switch and the inducer motor assembly and it was clear and the wires to the switch were fine. The furnace is 20 years old so I ordered the correctly rated pressure switch replacement as a first step--that did not solve the problem! For the record, I also verified that the limit switch was working properly. I looked outside to inspect the roof vent at the chimney coming from the furnace and I couldn't see anything obstructing it. I decided to look at the furnace side of that vent and did not see anything at first, but then I noticed what looked like fiberglass insulation inside the inducer motor assembly--and part of that had frayed. The damaged pieces of gasket/insulation that broke off ended up blocking the tic-tac-box-sized opening to the chimney from the inducer housing! I cleared that gasket material completely, cleaned the assembly while I had it off, and reattached it--and voila! It worked. Now my question is what is the function of that gasket: Because the pressure switch is detecting the correct pressure, it should mean that combustion gases are safely being whisked away and up the chimney even with the gasket in place. The gap between the inducer motor assembly and furnace combustion chamber is virtually nil once screwed down, so it is unclear to me why the gasket is there. Is the gasket meant to prevent CO and other gases or heat from escaping or is it meant to keep the inducer motor cooler or simply to dampen vibration? I plan to replace that gasket with Lynn Manufacturing High Temperature Flat Gasket Tape, rate to 1000-degrees F because the Amana part is no longer available. Thoughts?

Hi Jim! Thank you for watching, subscribing and leaving a detailed comment! Glad to hear you were able to find and fix the problem! I think you pretty much answered your own question. The gasket is there primarily to prevent any of the exhaust fumes from leaking out. The inducer motor housing is not always flush to the wall of the furnace, there may be a spot where there is a little crack in between. And secondarily it's to somewhat help with dampening the noise/vibration. That high temp gasket tape will work great! Stay warm!

Just wanted to say you have a terrific channel. Your videos are clear, concise and a full of practical tips. Thank you for your efforts. Recently my furnace wouldn’t stay on for more than 10 to 20 seconds. When I checked, I had a flame sensor error. After I corrected that, the main problem remained. Strangely, I had appropriate pressures and voltages across all the pressure switches, even while the furnace kicked out. The only way to identify the faulty pressure switch was to bypass it, which worked like a charm. I still do not understand why a bad pressure switch caused a flame sensor error, but that’s for another day. Thanks again for your helpful and insightful advice.

When I pulled a wire off roll out the evac fan came on confirming it was not bad but I was stumped and only had a few minutes to look (empty rental) so I went on to my other calls. Thanks Jay! My problem turned out to be a blown thermal fuse behind the pressure switch. I tested the pressure switch first and then went looking for another solution. I was able to follow the electric current with a voltage detector and it ended at the thermal fuse. When I bypassed the thermal fuse the furnace kicked over and is working well. Now I need to find the appropriate thermal fuse which should be interesting with all the Covid 19 closures

I'm typically a very handy person but have only been a homeowner for 2 years now and with my recent pressure switch trouble on my furnace I found myself out of my element. Had a HVAC repair guy out a couple times and he can't figure it out. Your videos have gone through more troubleshooting steps than the repair guy tried so I'm quite sure I'll be able to figure it out now. My guess is a bad pressure switch.

@@ThePlay6666 Yeah, that could also be the cause. My furnace had recently started giving a Code 31 and shutting down shortly after the thermostat called for heat. I used the Shop Vac and vacuumed the intake pipe out, then switched the hose to the pressure side of the vacuum cleaner and used pressure to force any remaining stuff out. Now the furnace seems to be running normally (knocking on wood).

If you understand this procedure it can get you by until the hvac guy gets there or until you get a replacement yourself and prevent you from freezing....and moreover your water pipes. Good video. Yes I am an HVAC guy.

You're welcome! He is actually right in a way.. Because once the furnace is done with that heating cycle and it turns off, it will not turn back on. You would have to go through the jumping procedure over again.

It's called not assuming liability for a homeowner for bypassing a safety device. What if the flue passage way is block or the inducer is full if water and a untrained homeowner bypasses that safety device.

When I started making HVAC videos, one of my main focuses was to "speak in English". From what you said, it sounds like I was able to pull that off! :) I understand how you feel since I went to school and took notes for 2 years as well... Like you said, it is good to know all of that stuff but it's very different from what actually goes on in the field. I was fortunate that for the last 4 years I had a senior tech who is pretty much my mentor and that man really knows his stuff. He's the guy I call whenever I am stuck. Wouldn't have known nearly as much without his 30 years of HVAC wisdom. Anyway, I am happy to have people like you guys watching my videos and that the videos are helping with the HVAC learning! Haha and about the camera... After a couple years in the trade I am sure you will be able to afford much more than just a nice camera ;)

@@WayneRigley Do you know how to adjust the pressures? If not it's probably useless. You are doing the same thing as bypassing because if it's not adjusted correctly, it won't shut off the furnace when it's got a cracked heat exchanger or lagging exhausted fan possibly leaking carbon monoxide inside your house. There's probably nothing wrong with the old switch. I don't think I've had but a couple bad on any furnace since I've been doing this. It's extremely dangerous for an untrained person to change a (balance switch) pressure switch. I've been doing HVAC repair since the 70s

Just a question, since the inducer motor turned on, and then you bypassed the pressure switch and everything worked, once it stopped calling for heat it would turn off again and there would be no safety issue. You would have to come and do the same thing again to restart it, yes?

Yes. Every time the furnace turns off that would basically reset it.

As a homeowner I figured out this trick before watching this video, but it is great to confirm it. To those 'professionals' who warn this is dangerous, yes, you're right; but the fact that you do not mention what cautions should be taken when using this method just makes me thinking whether you are trying to help or scare away homeowners. Yes, before using this method， I did check the intake, exhaust, other inducer passages, the inducer itself and water trap. I also do have CO detectors. In my case, it IS a pressure switch issue. So is my case the 1%? Probably not based on previous experiences. So what should I do? Either live in a cold house risking burst plumbing while waiting for the new pressure switch to arrive in a few days, or use this method cautiously several times a day while awake to keep my house reasonably warm. Personally I prefer the latter.

Hi Jay. I have a Fluke that allows me to check the contacts even on a hot circuit, thanks to this I get a quick diagnosis, but if we can't do that, this technique is the solution.
