More to Bishop Barron's point is that the truth is being suppressed because the power of the government and the media is mightier than others with no objective law or truth standing in the way. They removed the universal truths and symbols of the cross (Judeo-Christian truths), the flag (American and western civilization values), and now they're going after science (genderless fairy god person anyone?) to guarantee that no objectivity exists and therefore will only become more powerful in suppressing and censoring others. Crazy times.

Excellent commentary Bishop Barron, & in stating so, you too have opened a space for the ‘TRUTH’. Unfortunately many can no longer tell the difference between Fact & Fiction. This, I believe, happens when we as a society, walk away from the ‘Way, the Truth, & the Life’. Reject Christianity, & all that remains are - many erroneous ways, lies, & death. “The road to perdition is broad, and many go there. The road to salvation is narrow and few find it”. Whether read of in terms of eternal salvation, or even in terms of finding truth in this life, that’s a chilling & sobering quote from scripture. Thankfully the Lord’s mercy is greater than our sin, & we can only hope that He will soon deliver us from our misguided path.

Your Excellency, thank you for the thoughtful discussion about totalitarianism. I fully agree with your warning, especially when we as society lose unity due to the struggle of wills in which all sides of current social-political discourse are guilty. You speak of it becoming ever more acceptable to invent our own values; I see this as the modern celebration of selfishness and desire for instant gratification. This is practiced BOTH by the political right and left in the United States. The divergence in objective truth is amplified by vilifying one another, while in truth most adherents to either cause hypocritically apply their objective truth to the shortcomings of the other and not themselves. So the solution? The teachings of Jesus; the truth! Love God. Love your neighbor as yourself. Forgive and love your enemies. Repent and sin no more. Don’t judge others and don’t be a hypocrite. Salvation is the reward for those who suffer, are poor, meek, humble, merciful, and love peace . . . not for the powerful, rich, unforgiving, selfish, proud, and dishonest. That’s the hard truth of Jesus’ good news. Totalitarianism is incapable of existing in a society that accepts His truth!!!

Two things. Firstly I agree that when every individual's truth is true, then objective truth has ceased to exist publicly, and that is in part, the post modern condition. But secondly do we not ourselves come out of an intellectual tradition that has sought to dominate, and in the past tyrannised those who dared to question the truth that was on offer. You mentioned the Czech Republic, Jan Hus, a Czech was burned at the stake because he dared the teachings of the church. Similarly in in early modern England many Catholics and Protestants were executed because they dared to follow their own conscience, rather than follow the teachings of the religious authorities that were supported by the particular monarch at the time. It's all very well complaining about totalitarianism when we find that we are no longer the dominating intellectual authority, but we should not forget that when we were, we were not that brilliant ourselves.

Jan Hus, Henry VIII and Martin Luther did not question the church. They chose passion over reason. Read the biographies of these men and you will see they were slaves to their passions not to truth. If they were alive today they'd be supporting gay pride parades and the celebration of indulging the most disordered passions. They would be the one's telling you there is no objective truth, that 2+2=5. They would agree that gender is fluid and one can change his identity depending on his feeling at the moment. These were men unable to keep commitments because they indulged their every whim. Truth was not what they were seeking. They were enslaved to their passions and insisted their inclinations were truths. Like most who choose passion over reason they looked only to faults in others as though this could confirm their own virtue. They refused to remove the log from their own eye while claiming to remove the speck from another's eye. It is not surprising that their followers have split into over 50,000 sects. Not surprising as each had his own truth.

@@alexk48 I think, with respect, you have missed the point. It does not really matter, with regard to what I wrote, whether Jan Hus was right or wrong. The fact is that he was killed because he disagreed with the church. If that is not a totalitarian act I don't know what is. My point was that in the past the church has been totalitarian.

@@alexk48 I’m catholic and often think how could have been different if onley Tetzel was open for conversation. Was Luther wrong to question? Was he wrong about asking conversation about 95 theses? If he was so wrong, how come that people recognized something is wrong with Tetzel’s teaching? Why protestantism spread so fast and so far away from Wittenberg? Onley when they became a threat for Catholic church, reform happened. Oh, I wish we can put our ego aside and talk! I wish to see conversation with dear Bishop and Taylor Marshall! I wish we could recognize division spirit, overcome it by talking to eachother. I think often how patient was JP II with trads and liberals, he never gave up, always trying to talk with all! But That’s maybe onley my subjective view. Stay well

Amen! Bishop Barron is a rare voice serving the truth so elegantly online. Unfortunately, social media often only adds fuel to the consuming fire of moral relativist untruth, reaffirming individuals and groups in their preferred 'realities'. This is a point communicated well in Trevin Wax's book, This is Our Time. Bishop Barron's ministry is a welcome online sanctuary.
