Work Boots vs Hiking Boots

What's the difference between a work boot and a hiking boot? This video goes over some of the differences between them, such as differences in materials, features, and ratings. Sometimes the differences are clear as day, but other times the lines between a work boot and a hiking boot can be blurred. We'll explain why two similar looking boots can be classified differently.
At the end of the day, deciding which to wear boils down to your personal preferences, or in some cases, job requirements.
We deliberately didn't talk about steel toe or other safety toes in differentiating between work boots and hiking boots because most people will easily be able to identify anything with an ASTM rated safety toe as being a work boot. Just felt it wasn't relevant in this case since the difference there is so clear. However, you absolutely could still hike in a pair of steel toe boots too, it just wouldn't be our first choice for most hiking settings.

Thanks for the detail explanation and comparison. I am still choosing the perfect shoe for my all-purpose shoes. So your explanation pretty much assisted me a lot in my decision making. I used to own Karimar hiking shoes and they lasted me 4 years, I hiked hills and mountains and it was all good until I used it to jog, that's where the outer sole got all worn out. Thanks

I'm looking for a boot that is a good all rounder that's easy to keep clean, handles the rain / wet well and looks cool with jeans. I don't do manual labour but I quite like the work boot look and will use them for a few miles daily walking around town, walking the dog (wet grass and mud) and a bit of small hill hiking.

Want to wear hiking boots so bad but I am a Conservation Biologist and most companies won't let you wear a shoe without a steel cap, they are so heavy and that's my biggest complaint really, I like the grip on my shoe, they feel pretty stable on rough terrain. Honestly, if it is for recreation then use a hiking boot, it's not as heavy on the feet.

For a good all-around pick that is lightweight and durable I would look at the Danner Vicious or Keen Detroit. Both of them are available with or without a safety toe. Hey Tyler- Probably depends on what kind of work you'll be doing and what kind of terrain you'll be hiking. Most likely a backpacking boot would be the best of both worlds since it will be a little more stout and durable than your average hiking boot, but a little lighter than most medium to heavy duty work boots. holy crap this is the video i needed to help answer my question about certain boots to have to replace my everyday shoes. ive wanted something that can look nice with jeans, durable, lasts a loooong time, can handle my outdoor antics like hiking, fishing, biking, and casual walking in the snow, rain, or hot summer dry day. ive thought about redwing's lineup for leather boots but the cost makes me want to pull away from using that boot for everyday wear. im not a construction worker or anything of the sort but i just feel that work boots or any sort of leather boots just look nice on a guy. durability and comfort are huge for me and i get really picky on certain boots/shoes if i am looking for a pair that is going to last me a long time (6+ years). there needs to be more boot knowledge out there to help people like me trying to learn about what fits better.

if you're still looking, I've got two recommendations. For a cheap boot (~$30), the Response Gear 6 inch at Big 5 is awesome, a pair won't last close to 6 years, but they're comfortable out of the box (have gone backpacking for 3 days out of the box with NO issues, astounding), and hold up fairly well. Was my choice for warehouse work (40 hrs/week on concrete + insole), backpacking, and general hiking/walking. My SO wears them for USPS CCA work and they last about 2-3 months under extreme duress. For a great all-rounder, I've had a Redback slip on for about 6 years and frankly, they're still going and looking good but just about used up. I've hiked in those (and worn daily) in snowy to desert climates. Despite being only a leather layer, my feet have stayed warm and surprisingly dry. There's no lining to wear out which is great! They do require break in though, unlike the Reponse Gear boots, and are not _quite_ as comfortable. However, I have bunions/high arch so my feet will just hurt no matter what really. Best thing about the redbacks besides the thick leather top are the soles, they're strong, grippy, flexible, and awesome for rugged and varied terrain. A pair runs about $180-220 and are well worth the cost. Both are good for hiking, the response gear are best for work (for me with foot issues, if you don't have issues, redbacks would be great I'm sure). If anyone has a good recommendation for a CCA boot, PLEASE let me know, lol!

How long term / what kind of climate and terrain? I def wouldn't worry about steel toe or cut proof for something like that though. Also need to consider socks. The wrong socks in that kind of situation will wreck your feet, cause infections, blisters, etc - I'd only recommend wool (preferably merino). Darn Tough, Smartwool, & Wigwam are all good choices.

One important aspect of working boots is foot protection, more than confort. If you are working you could end up whit a heavy tool landing in four feet, or walking over shattered glass, substances, chemicals, sharp surfaces, etc. The most importan aspect of a working boot is foot protection, that's why those have some sort of certifications.
