Great quote on this topic: “A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play; his labor and his leisure; his mind and his body; his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both.” -Lawrence Jacks

I thoroughly disagree. While I will not claim to yet be a “master in the art of living”, I do think I have figured out a few things about what life is, and I can still very clearly tell the difference between hanging out and watching StarCraft with my best friends (leisure) and having to execute a round of redundancies (work). If you can no longer distinguish between these two, I propose you discuss this with your therapist.

@@MrShikagaWell I think maybe because you take the actions/activities of your job too personal, but understanding the reason behind to do it and you executed the best possible, there's no reason why you can continue with your life to the next role that probably is more important maybe family or studies...

Thank you for making this video. It really speaks to the situation I'm in now. Here in America, its been pretty trendy lately to rubber stamp all of society's problems with negative liberty. "Anything is possible; you're just lazy." Time is not a renewable resource. Devoting time to one thing always means taking it away from somewhere else. Don't speak to me about "success." You can't be good at one thing without being bad at something else

Greg Moberg The School of Life But this of course doesn't mean we shouldn't try to be good at something (anything). Can't we recognize the fact that we will be imbalanced and fight for something regardless? Are there things worth being imbalanced for? This is a question I ask myself, and so far in my life the answer has been yes, and I'm not a body builder, I'm a scientist. I also know that I'm a workaholic, and I do have my doubts as to whether I can continue to live the sports car life. Does imbalance equal unhappiness? Does balance make the world go round? The only people we learn from in science seem to be sports cars. Maybe that's a problem of the portrayal of the giants on whose shoulders we stand (the most likely case, I think). Maybe we really do need some people to be sports cars. Maybe the world we be better if none of us tried to be sports cars. I don't know.

We have been conditioned to believe that we have to be the jack of all trades to get a job. This is all because of employers' unreasonable demands; Instead of paying a group of highly skilled individuals, they rely on one person to do everything. This cheap cost-cutting trick is actually damaging to the company, the economy, and society as a whole. We can't be the best at everything, it's unrealistic. Suppose everyone was good at everything, they will have to keep up to date with everything too. Doesn't sound practical but good luck with that. I understand what the video is saying, it's good. But society doesn't allow us to invest in our hobbies and passions because all our time is taken to work all day everyday just to pay bills.

there are people who work very few hours ,make a lot of money and they have plenty of time for their own personal life. So it's not impossible. For most people work doesnt leave them much time for personal life and work it's self doesnt give them a lot of money either no matter how hard they work, they end up not succeeding in anything. There is a stupid belief which is convenient to some for us to believe that the harder you work the greater reward you'll have, which is completely false.

I thought the whole idea of work-life balance was to opt for that imperfect variety... Isn't it about letting yourself off work and having time at home as well as work? Work-life balance is the antidote to the narrow perfection, or at least it hopes to be.

***** Agreed, I guess it depends on the type of life you wish to live, if your less materialistic and more open to experiencing the beauty and breath of life then you can live with doing less hours of work that seem to drain all our energy by the end of the day... But since people think they need more materialistic stuff/security in life they'll tend to continue to work for long hours even into their home hours, their to afraid of losing their jobs than realising their gonna end up spending their whole lives doing something they never loved all in the name of survival and security....
@gailcbull9 жыл бұрын
***** So here's my question for you: what is the alternative to work-life balance? What's it's opposite? As far as I can see, it's opposite is dedicating your life to just work. That means never committing yourself to a longterm relationship, never having children, and having only online friends. You can't dedicate your life to only personal relationships because then you'd have no source of income and would end up homeless and starving. Either way, your going to be left feeling unsatisfied. angry at life, and potentially suicidal. We have no choice but to make life-work balance work because our civilization is so arranged that we can't survive without a regular paycheque.
@Acquavallo9 жыл бұрын
Gail Bull You're so dramatically oversimplifying that you're not even talking about the same thing anymore. Work-life balance is the balance you strike between home life and work life. It as no opposite. The metaphor is a scale and depending on which part of the scale with work and life on either side. This isn't some sort of idea of complete laziness or having no friends, it's a question of being a workaholic. This is just a way to remind people to put a sufficient effort into family.
@gailcbull9 жыл бұрын
Acquavallo I was replying to Awesome Dude's comment where he implies that work-life balance is not possible when you work a 9 to 5 job. I know work-life balance is a scale, but Awesome Dude seems to think it isn't. My point is that work-life balance is the only option. You have to compromise and be selective about what you make time for to make it work, but real life is entirely about compromise so that's shouldn't be surprising. In my comment, I took the denial of the need for work-life balance to it's most extreme version to prove that you can't reject one aspect or the other of your life without drastic consequences.

Actually, this contradicts completely my understanding of the 'Work/Life Balance' movement, which I had understood to be recognising that we _are_ generalists and, therefore, need to balance work and 'life', rather than trying to recommend that we are equally good at everything. It is comforting to watch this and be reassured that we are best suited to be 'jacks of all trades', as that is my inclination, perhaps to the detriment of any given area.

But how can you be passionate about anything if you've spread yourself so thin? This is reassuring in times of discomfort, but that "FOMO"-that you argue against putting yourself through-teaches you to learn as much as possible, and the second you find some sort of nuance that you're truly passionate about, the apprehension this video touches on dissolves. When you're truly intrigued, you stop worrying about other people's proficiency at something/many things, and focus in on what you're doing. This is great as a grounding force if you're ever feeling nervous comparing yourself to those "masters of a trade", but if you don't try to emulate the people you think are successful at doing something YOU WANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL at, if you don't torture yourself to learn, then you'll lose appreciation for just how profound discovery and learning can be. I think the work-life balance is a misnomer, it's an attempt to balance learning and communicating (The derivative/common factors that lead to a positive change in both work and life) that we're all after when we say that. The real problem is that anxieties we face make us fear participating in either or both learning or communicating, to the detriment of yourself and the society you should be trying to advance. *This video states an opinion, as it is un-evidenced by any facts. To which I'm only replying with my opinion*. (Also I think that given the fact that this video is un-evidenced it shouldn't be categorized as "Education" on KZbin, though it is interesting and thought-provoking)

Very interesting video! Although I do agree with the main point, that combining too many tasks and roles will not support the balance and will impact performance of each of them, I think humans are capable of meeting both needs: for the optimal performance and variety. It's about compartmentalising during the day and keeping the focus on the task at hand. If you are clear about what you want to accomplish in your day, dedicate your time and focus to 2-3 top priorities, it is possible. Most peeople don't like to plan and get tangled in their mobile phones and social networking, while doing other things. It's not very healthy to multitask, but when I'm short of time or want to make some time, I will do it with things that require less focus and are lower on my priority list. I guess there's also the case with how you define work-life balance. Is this something that happens every day? I'd say aiming for it is good, but on some days you'll get more work-life balance than on others, because in the end, you can't predict what life will throw at you.

Very important video for lots of people out there, including me, who don't feel like really fitting in with this "focus on one thing and reach mastery" thing. I'd argue that every person is to some extend focused life and to some extend a lives a life of variety. Only the balance between these two is individual for each and everyone of us. Someone might feel comfortable with focusing 90% of the time and only 'opening up' 10% of the time, and another person might be exactly the opposite. And that is totally fine :)

I would even say that people who choose variety and novelty live the most balanced life. Because people who focus on only one thing miss so much, even though they are perfect in their activity. On the other hand if people are busy with too many different activities, they won't have any purpose in life and won't be good at anything. So, everything we do must be balanced and I think we should not fall into one of the two extremes.

When your business is your output, knowing what is worth committing your energy to is essential!

" The Raging Bull" , former world boxing champion Jake LaMotta says that he always had problems with his weight. Then he says: - I will tell you what the best diet is: " Eat as much as you want but do not swallow !" Well, I am no dietician, but I guess it would be healthier to eat as diversely as possible , but then to take the necessary time to chew, swallow and digest properly :-) It is the same with our relationship to the world. It makes your life much richer and worth living if you have a broader spectrum of interests. It is definitely " healthier" for your soul! But then , at a period of time when you are into a particular one of those things, you must really be fully engaged and focused. Otherwise you might be chewing but not swallowing! Neil Degrasse Tyson often tells this story about " his man" Isaac Newton: One day a friend of Newton asked him " why the orbits of the planets were in the shape of an elips". So Newton said: "I don't know yet, but I 'll get back to you". He thought about the question for a couple of months until he found the right answer. And then he said: " I had to invent Integral and Differential Calculus" to determine this! ( At the age of 26 by the way!!!) Well, I guess in those two months Newton probably thought about this " all the time" and he couldn't spend much time with his people or do anything else. So he probably had an unbalanced life for a while, but obviously it was worthed, since what he discovered helps the entire humanity now! I guess this is why this great lesson above says: "Everything worth fighting for unbalances your life". I think you must spend "periods of time" living in depths and with great intensity when you really want to get deeper into something , but then you should come back and try to restore the balance. Like apologizing from your friends that you couldn't give them for a while the attention they deserved. My most beloved hero Edward Said, who was a Palestinian intellectual and professor of English and comperative literature in Columbia University, also talks about this subject in his book" Representations of the intellectual" in the chapter " Professionals and Amateurs": "To be a specialist in literature too often means shutting out history or music or politics. In the end as a fully specialized literary intellectual, you become tame and accepting of whatever the so -called leaders in the field will allow. Specialization also kills your sense of excitement and discovery, both of which are irreducibly present in the intellectual's make up. In the final analysis giving up to specialization is, I have always felt, laziness, so you end up doing what others tell you, because that's your specialty after all. " ( Thank you very much for this very valuable lesson! )

Honestly I will not call this as a work, because Newton was never intended to get his salary or bread from this work but instead was deeply involved in a quest. Most of the life changing inventions came outside the salaried work which formed an hobby for most people. People work in many software companies for salary but then work for linux as an hobby and everyone knows how much better linux is.

While motivating to listen to, I feel it misses what the idea of work-life balance is. It doesn't mean that work and life should exist at equal levels of optimization but rather we need to find out how much of each is what really makes us happy in relation to what we need to survive. It essentially says don't work or play too hard because there can be adverse affects to each.

Depression, anxiety, insomnia and excessive drinking are often symptoms of the stress caused by over demanding work and/or poor management. Work/life balance can be improved if people accept their limitations, find a career/job that suits their personality and interests and accept it will probably come at the cost of a reduced income. If you work out what work suits you and then base your lifestyle on the money you earn you will probably be happier with your life and your work/life balance in the long run.

Good points, though as I understood it the entire point of work life balance was that you were choosing variety rather than being perfect at one.

It is a very interesting video and I fully agree that opting for breadth and variety of social roles / passions / activities in life can bring more fulfilment. Nonetheless, in terms of professional development and career paths - isn't it better to opt for this "flawless focus" at single area of interest? This is, after all, the idea of professionalisation and being a specialist in something. Society needs specialists in various areas and the labour market composed of individuals who would know where they want to direct their energy and ambitions, career-wise, would be simply more optimal and better-performing. It is actually an argument brought by School of Life in another video.

Thank you. Going into my exam week at uni I was beside myself, my housework and family life was taking the back seat while I studied. I didn't realise the effect it was taking on myself until I fell asleep when putting the kids to bed a few nights in a row instead of completing university work which I was hoping to do 😅

I like doing a lot of things but do to work i dont have a lot of time.to do them or to strenghten them, if only i didng have to worry about money and had all the time in the world to do a lot of things extensively. Practice makes perfect, but there are so many things to do, its true one cant be everything in life, so choose what you love to do the most, mix it up, try new & different things

Thinking of this sometimes...At one point though, we all dedicate our lives to a certain domain of activity regarding work or even our living conditions and location. Very few people remain completely diverse and flexible their whole life. Edventually we do focus on one area...like a doctor or a company or a lawyer or a teacher. We always find something to dedicate our lives towards. Something our lives tend to revolve around wether we like it or not. We cannot know everything and we cannot be good at everything. We can only strive for such goals. We are born ignorant lusting for knowledge and ultimately die ignorant in some way. It sounds demeaning and discouraging sometimes...but only because I cannot see the "purpose" of my existence. I cannot find that one domain to give myself into... But...giving up is not an option, better keep trying to reach that impossible perfection, rather than sulk and do nothing.

Oh man, I love this. You speak from my heart. I purposedly am working towards the goal to be "a jack of all trades, master of none". It´s a path which is not praised and watched by millions but it´s soooo fulfilling one I can´t even describe it :) But I can enjoy playing the piano, writing my book, doing massages, cooking and doing DIY stuff, among others :)

I just love this channel. Its so honest and so amazing. Every time u will find me telling my students the same thing = x, after having discovered so many things in life on my own with so much difficulty and time spent/wasted. x = 'why the hell wasn't I taught all this by my parents or in school'. And this channel seems to pretty much address that :) I thank the creators from the bottom of my heart for such a lovely way to make their earnings. And to answer the comment complaining about such less subscribers... well, majority of people are not grounded, mature or smart enough to enjoy this kinda entertainment

Imagine a world where everyone is given the opportunity to achieve total focus in a field of his/her choice. Where every human has one sharp purpose, where there are no bad drivers, no bad cooks, no bad anything (unless ofc someone chose to specialise in beign bad lol). Heaveeen
