When I was 10 years old my dad was in the market for a pickup to replace the '86 Ranger he had sold years before. My next door neighbor's elderly father had stopped driving so his medium olive metallic 1971 GMC 1500 stepside was sitting at the curb for sale. I suggested my dad buy that one. He paid $1200 for a low mileage, 307, 3 on the tree, light duty stepside with a body color original wood bed underneath a removable concrete slab. Mostly original paint with patina, original plates. He rebuilt the engine, swapped the 3spd for a TH350 auto with shift kit, dual exhaust and wheels and tires. 22 years later still has the same paint, he's building another engine for it, TH400 trans. He installed heavier duty rear springs. It's done home renovations, hauled boat trailers, been filled up with firewood, bark, dirt, concrete mix bags, swap meet duty, dump runs, moved furniture, I drove it in the local 4th of July parade, autocrossed it twice, and dad's taken it to the drag strip several times. He doesn't paint it because if it's too nice you can't do work with it. Love that old truck.

There's a guy in my hometown that bought a brand new 1991 Dodge 3/4 powered by a 360 small block off the lot of the local Ford/Chrysler dealership. He originally used it as a daily driver until the early 2000s and ever since then I can only remember it as the truck with a plow on it 365 days of the year, flat bed with wooden stake sides with chains and straps always hanging off the side, and being the most menacing looking farm truck coming up in your rear view mirror. That truck has over 450,000 miles on it and it has been used and abused constantly. It plows snow 6-7 months out of the year, he'll tow people out of the ditch if they're stuck, he drives it in his farm field all the time, it's been down probably every back road in the county and just been beaten into the ground mechanically. Always farm fixed, and only maintained if needed. It hasn't seen the inside of a dealership or a shop in over 20 years. If that's what you're talking about by saying a truck has heart then I would absolutely agree! Awesome story Rabbit, and sorry to hear about your grandfather.

A lot can be said for the "pre-plastic" era of trucks... "Heart" seems to be more prevalent in steel (which is organic and began as an actual part of our planet) than in blow-molded parts, which are just solidified chemical soup. I believe your friend "Smiley" knew this... I'm no philosopher, but there seems to something about having been "forged in fire" that gives a certain "aura" to vehicles from the golden age of the automotive industry. This holiday season, I am thankful to have been born in time to experience that. Hope everyone's Turkey-day was a good one! 👍

Yeah that might be my favourite car story of ever heard on KZbin. I'm extremely sorry to hear about your grandfather but sounds like you had a similar connection like I had to mine and it brought a smile to my face listening. Watching MotoGP with them on Sunday mornings probably the thing that got me into sport bikes( I don't think he had a rode a motorcycle since World War II but he was just cool like that) I'm pretty much putting to bed a 2002 Suburban but I've had for over 10 years. I got a brand new Silverado it's way more truck than that burban ever was... I estimate there is 430,000 clicks on it. In the history of this car the fuel water pump went after about a 100 kilometres the fuel pump went at about 260 and the power steering pump went at about 330. Other than that just preventative maintenance

Got it at under 120K miles and it’s coming up on 180K this week sitting like a dream. I constantly get people wanting to buy my truck the lowest offer I got was 5K and the highest I got was 10K. I’m never selling this thing

My first truck was a work truck. 1959 F 250 with an 8 foot utility bed purchased in 1969 for $ 400.00. I owned it for 19 years and sold it for $ 650.00 so I had to claim capital gains and depreciation recapture on my tax return that year. My best truck was a F 350 with a Tommylift gate. I retired it to the scrapyard (drove it in) with 328,000 miles since the scrap value was darn near as high as the value of the truck and I would have had to make some repairs and get an emission sticker in order to sell it. That one lasted 21 years.
@dannycasler49594 жыл бұрын
I know that the Chevy trucks are all the rage but I have an 81 Dodge ''utiline'' (stepside) 8 foot bed truck that I traded a car to a friend to get shortly before he passed away. I will never sell it because it reminds me of him every time I look at it! A few years after I got it the rear spring perches were rotting off around the rivets so I cut them off and moved them up as high on the frame as I could and welded them on, The right front spring was broken so I took both springs out and cut the left one off to match the right! The upper control arms rusted out so I took rebar and curved it to match the little channels on the edges and welded them in to strengthen them. The bed floor rusted out of it so I cut old washers and dryers up and welded the steel into the bottom of the bed, I cut the 90's on the edges up as high as I needed to weld the bed sides back to the new floor, I messed the grille up pushing an old junker so I welded old dirt picks to the bumper to hang tires on and work as a push bar! The funny part of it is that all of my family members used to laugh at this old rusty hulk of a truck and their nice shiny trucks that they had when I got this truck have succumbed to Ohio winters long ago and this old thing has kept right on going with a lot of welding and no money! Just using what I had to piece it back together! I've decided it needs a break now so I'm going to license it as an antique, dig out all of the trash that has accumulated over the last 20 years and just use it as a driver instead of towing and hauling with it, The welder will work to keep it going for years to come! Sorry to ramble on but that's what happens when you get old!
