Thanks Mr. Whit, I used your video here to get ready for a College Math Screening Test (an automated online test, 'Accuplacer') and nearly all the Word Problems on the test were Rate Time = Distance problems ( corollary Rate = D/T ). I just had to scratch " R x T = D & R=D/T & T=D/R " on the heading of my scratch paper and the problems just solved themselves. Thanks Professor.

That’s amazing Leo! Congratulations on preparing 4 the Accuplacer and good luck on placing into (or out of) the course you need!
@leovolont6 жыл бұрын
Hi "FBT", Oh, yeah, that On Line Accuplacer Test gives you your placement as soon as you hit the last "are you sure you want to submit what you just submitted" key. Do you know about the Accuplacer test? The Accuplacer Test is broken up into 3 sub-tests. The test is designed not to waste people's time. If you don't get a certain threshold score in the first test then you get locked out and it tells you to sign up for Developmental Mathematics 1 and 2. Then if you can't get through Test number 2 with a high enough score then it locks you out of Test 3, and tells you to sign up for "College Level Algebra". IF you can get into Test 3 at all then you are already good to go for some interesting classes. The Moderator explained all that, and so I made it a priority to focus on not slap dashing through Tests One and Two and killing myself with carelessness (I have been self teaching myself, and while I have found that being systematic is the best way to go, still, I have to guard against taking unsystematic shortcuts when I firmly believe that I will be able to keep all of the lose 'shortcut' threads straight in my head, which is not always the case) . I had to hurry through the 3rd test because I took a lot of time with 1 and 2. But with max scores of 300 I got a 292 300 273 which will tell the people in the Math Department that I have a good solid foundation for what courses are available to me. I will sign up for Algebra and Trig. I've already gone over the material, but it will be fascinating to pick up on other people's insights. Also, I do need the practice... in tests 1 and 2 there were moments where the time slipped by because it took a while to see what I should have seen in the first inspection of the problem. Practice makes perfect.

So I'm studying for an upcoming test and I'm really bad with these kind of problems..The one I can't seem to figure out is this one: One pipe can fill a tank 1.25 times faster than the second pipe. Both of them together can fill the tank in 5 hours. How long would it take if only the slower pipe is used? I end up with 11.25x = 1.25x^2 and have no idea how to proceed or even if these numbers are correct..The book says to solve for x and throws this at me: 5+(5/1.25)=x .. How did they get this? If I do it according to this video, I get 11.25x=1.25x^2....Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks Fort Bend!!! I'm studying for the GRE and the shortcut is indispensible, Thanks! I'm wondering why the shortcut works and if the work done must always equal to one. For example, will the shortcut still work if Anna had cleaned 3 houses and Gloria had cleaned 2 houses??
@FortBendTutoring8 жыл бұрын
+hagehego The shortcut works because the process is streamlined into the operations that are being carried out in the "long" method. Only use the shortcut when it equals one as you're benefiting from the identity property of one to simplify the procedure.

@diegodiegstv36425 жыл бұрын
Sir I think the second equation it wrong because the time becomes longer while the two pipes are both running .. I thing the equation must be 1/5+1/8=1/x . Correct me if im wrong ..
@FortBendTutoring5 жыл бұрын
You are incorrect and the time should be longer. The reason is because the goal is to fill the pool, however the outlet pipe is taking water from the pool. Since the pipe that fills the pool can fill it faster than the outlet pipe can empty it, it’s filled at a slower rate than normal. Therefore, the equation and process is correct. Thanks 4 asking! 👨🏾🏫😀

Tiffany works 1.5 times faster than Mary. Together, they do a job in 7.5 hours. How long does it take Tiffany working alone to do the same job? Solution Let f = number of hours it takes Tiffany working alone and 1.5f = number of hours it takes Mary working alone 1 job/f + 1 job/1.5f = 1 job/7.5 hours Solve for f to get f = 12.5 hours Working alone, Tiffany takes f.
