In Australia we have about 10m space in highways. They have large bushy plants growing there, deliberately bushy to prevent lights shining in driver's eyes from cars coming from the opposite direction. They are fully blocking, but enough for a safer and more comfortable drive. Pretty much all our highways of at least 4 lanes are like this. They also usually have fairly substantial grassy dips between roads to prevent people from doing illegal u-turns (although 4 wheel drives could probably easily manage it if driven by someone who knows how to do it). PS: I find your commentary very interesting and refreshing to the genre.

That's interesting. I wonder if the dip is also for drainage, but also part of the safety, to try to avoid an out of control vehicle going right over the 10m gap. We don't usually have that in UK, and there is invariably crash barriers down the centre so no possibility of u-turns. I was in the US recently on holiday on Route-66 in New Mexico and there was a big traffic jam, probably an accident up ahead. A number of people did use their SUVs to go across the big gap there, which also had the dip and no crash barriers. The police immediately stopped a couple of them :)

@@cannaewargaming4815 Yes, it's for those reasons too. Australia is a country of weather extremes so when it rains it totally buckets down. I now live in South Korea actually, which has lot of rain, but is almost exclusively barely spitting, where you don't even really get wet just standing in it. Korea doesn't have much flooding, but they have a lot of landslides - long term rain in very hilly country. I tried to explain Australian rain to Korean people. 😂They just don't get it because they've never seen rain like that. In Australia the rain comes down literally like someone threw a bucket of water at you, so we need a lot of drainage. And long time between rains mean that the ground is hard as rock, so water just doesn't go in. Rain floods can be over half a meter high in only a few minutes. Water raising is watchable and very dangerous. We tell people not to try to cross even though it's only 10cm high, because by the time you get across it's over half a meter and rapid. People have died in these types of situations in Australia. And yes, it's definitely for safety, too. The gully is basically low enough that normal cars can't navigate, but experienced 4 wheel drive car drivers can do it if they're careful. This is basically standard across Australia for 4 lane + intercity roads. We do use concrete barriers in inner-city highways for space reasons. And yes, Australian police would certainly have a dim view of people doing that kind of mischief. 😅 Looking forward to your next Workers & Resources. 🙂

Those street lights in the median look like death traps. 😮 Talk about a bad day crashing into one of them. 😩

@bnope5t Yes, they need crash barriers, but I don't have the patience to build them. It's a good job the drivers in this game don't ever carry out dangerous driving 😂 😂

Do you have screen space ambient occlusion enabled? It looks ugly in W&R anyway and disabling it will hide stepping of decorative walls a bit. I haven't started on blank map for years. Spending first decade building houses and roads isn;t fun for me. Now I'm playing on pre existing modded map bit in the past I used to spend two days building up my innitial pre war town in editor mode to have population, services and rail from the start in semi functional society. It might be even harder than blank map, as sustaning them costs a lot. Now with maintenance half of my resources and CO time goes into keeping those buildings standing. I also used to roll back start date a decade or so. That map had a lot of vehicles already placed so I couldn't bother to replace them all, so I kept 1960 start and only swaped locomotives to steam traction. Map I'm using have a lot of elevated rail structures and embankments, some lacking path connection. I'm struggling what to do. Disable maintenance on them or disable realistic every decade and fix them with cash. Both feels kind of wrong, but base game does not have maintenance on infrastructure at all, so maybe adding those tags and forgetting about them would be the best. But then I'm not sure how the game would react for such changes in those under repair. Editing hundred files to discover that your save is trashed and you have to rever them isn't fun.

TBH I don't know what screen space ambient occlusion is. I will have to look that up. I'm guessing from what you say that this is something to do with graphics settings, and have some assets that I don't like how the texture renders, and it is something I have been looking at, by editing the texture files. But if there is something else I can do to improve it, even if it involves upgrading my graphics setup then I am interested. The whole issue of maintenance is a biggy for me. What you are describing that you have been doing is exactly what I have had in mind for this series - spend some time building the republic before I even get to "playing". The issue of when/how to enable water, waste, maintenance etc. is going to be an issue. The bridge pylons for instance are not connected to roads/footpaths, so I can't have them collapse for lack of repair, nor have them burn down with the fire engines unable to reach them. It is the possibility that I mention that I might have to mod mods, to get some of them to comply with not using maintenance. The argument might be that it's then "cheating" that they are free to build, but I will try to avoid using something like the pylons that are essential to the running of the republic. They are for appearances only. So I might have to avoid using elevated rail structures as you suggest. Happy to have you along and I will listen to views about that.

@@cannaewargaming4815 Ambient occlusion is called in options just that. It is postproces adding shadows in concave areas. For some reason in W&R it looks like grainy shit. I disabled wear for elevated viaducts and it didn't crash. UI shows reconstruction in progress. We'll see how it baheves.

@@antonisauren8998 I see the settings on the game setup window that pops up. I had it low, do you think it should be Off or High? I can see that turning it off does improve frame rates, though it is not massive, and I'm wondering if that's the issue you are seeing in YT. Or whether it is the quality of the in-game graphics? To my mind turning it off makes buildings look flatter and less interesting, High seems better quality. But I don't want to use something that is then affecting the overall quality of the experience for people watching if the game regularly dips below 60 fps and that is visible on YT. Though I am rendering the video as 1080P in 30 fps, not 60. That's what seems to be recommended. While I have plenty of RAM, I'm only using an NVidia 1050. I have been considering upgrading anyway. If that would improve these things, then happy to have your view. In the Steam forum the only mention I see about SSAO is this: steamcommunity.com/app/784150/discussions/0/1814296273123860207/ The devs say only SSAO works when DOF is enabled, and I do have DOF enabled. Though I wouldn't be able to tell you why - I just accepted the settings the game suggested. :) Sorry, these are not things I have ever considered, so I'm a bit unsure what to do.

@@cannaewargaming4815 I can't see it at all on video. Just talking from my experience. I do have it on low despite thinking I have it disabled... Maybe they fixed the effect or in the past I was always disabling DOF so it was bugged. Don't worry about us, do what works for you.
