One danger a a lot of DIY scuba stuff forgets is that the oil from pumps (for example, the kind you'd find in a bike pump) is super bad for your lungs. When I went to grad school for marine ecology, I read a case study of divers in the Caribbean that used really sketchy rigs based around air compressors. If something else didn't kill them first--and this was super dangerous so big if--they would develop an emphysema-like disease.

In the early 2000s I saw a TV program on a marine survival suit for helicopter pilots that had a plastic bag with a mouth-tube you could breathe in and out from (after taking a big breath before you hit the water). It worked because we don't extract all the oxygen from the air we breathe, so our exhalations still contain a lot. It extended people's ability to hold their breath by twice.

I think it's likely James Bond was trained for underwater combat and extended breath holding. The mini oxygen supply gadget wouldn't have been built and given to James without a reason. The film shows how it gives the agent more mobility for combat. Then just go back for the scuba tank after the enemies are dealt with.

There is actually a natural effect that does the same thing as laughing gas, or at least something similar. When you get down to about 100 feet when scuba diving there is an effect called the rapture of the deep (aka nitrogen narcosis) which is a neurological response to nitrogen gas dissolved in the blood. It causes an effect that slightly alters the divers conscious depending on how far down you are.

it can be both, but it adds another thing to pay attention to and avoid getting wrong but IRL someone actually used something similar i remember eric fatah who is a canadian champion and actually experiming alot in freediving and do things that make any AIDA instructor uncomfortable tried prebreathing pure O2 from a small 1L bottle during certain dives and also Kirk Krack who helped james cameron for the underwater filming introduced the term "technical freediving" it's about prebreathing scuba mixes before freediving to allow for more time underwater and less risk of narcosis during repetitive freedives (yes you can get bends in freediving if you do douzens or hundreds of shallow dives with little rest time)

This could actually be useful as an emergency back up for scuba divers or for any other type of work or hobby involving water. Its pretty small so you could carry this thing in your pocket or have it on a belt clip, you could even carry more than one if need be and if you could find a way of sealing the cartridges after filling them you could just carry multiple cartridges on you and swap them out while underwater as needed. I could definitely see something like this becoming part of an emergency kit for divers and could be a backup or a backup to a backup for if you were to run out of air this could provide you with a few breaths to be able to make it to the surface with. And so long as your not panicking, you could hold each breath and make 4-5 breaths from each cartridge last longer, if you could hold your breath for 30-60 seconds each breath then 4-5 breaths could provide you with up to 2-5 minutes of emergency air from each cartridge. That would be PLENTY of enough time for someone a few dozen feet under water to make it to the surface, ESPECIALLY if your using one of those emergency surfing devices that fill with air to help you surface faster. But i think that something like this could be even more useful if instead of using cartridges made from aluminum like the Co2 cartridges, using ones made from something stronger like Titanium and be able to withstand higher pressures would be better. Cartridges made from Titanium would be able to pumped up to MUCH higher pressures and allow you to have 30 or maybe even 40 breaths if you use the large 70gram ones. And since they're so small, making them out of Titanium wouldn't really make that big of a difference in their weight.

If you hold your breath while surfacing your lungs can explode from the air expanding in them.
@mikesixx7655 Жыл бұрын
@Morgan Harris that only applies to air you breathe while it's compressed. Any air you breathe at atmosphere will not do that. We only ever worry about that if we are more than 60 feet underwater and you only have to worry about that for emergency ascents. Nobody is holding their breath on a slow ascent the air would be forced from your lungs as it slowly expands. This isn't divng 5 ATM down and trying to return to the surface with that compressed air in your lungs
@mikepowell5202 Жыл бұрын
JLaser briefly explained that gas compresses under depth. He was also diving quite shallow (10ft or about 3m, less than 1 additional atmosphere of pressure), and getting just a couple extra breathes. Atmospheric pressure increases in value every 10m. A recreational scuba divers typical range is 30m, which triples the atmospheric pressure. I can infer that gas in this device wouldn't provide a full breath for a diver at depth, and this wouldn't be suitable as a bailout.
@samuelowens0004 жыл бұрын
The James bond thing could also use a chemical reaction to release oxygen, allowing it to hold much more oxygen without the rediculous high pressure.
@IncendiaHL4 жыл бұрын
Samuel Owens Actually partially true. If you just filled the cartridges with 100% O2, you could go way longer on each breath. But the buildup of CO2 in your blood would be very uncomfortable, and dangerous as well. This is actually a discipline in breath-hold competitions. Filling those cartridges with pure O2 would however be super dangerous, because there is probably oil residue and other stuff inside them, making them subject to random explosions from the pressurized O2 making stuff burst into fire. Most materials will burn in a 100% O2 atmosphere given some heat, and the temperature inside does rise when the cartridges are pressurized. O2 cylinders need to be oxygen cleaned by an authorized technician because of this. (I’m a technical scuba diver, and this video makes my eyes bleed. But hey. To each his own, and I’ve seen much worse on youtube.)

Hey what about nitrogen poisoning or whatever it's called. Doesnt it affect free divers aswell.
@souswes4 жыл бұрын
@ free divers go on a single breath. Scuba divers air has a nitrogen mix, that at depth, dissolved into the body tissues. So it becomes an issue when you do multiple dives back to back, or your depth is too great. Divers require what’s called a “surface interval” to allow the body to release the built up nitrogen to safer levels. Free divers don’t have this problem because they aren’t breathing the compressed air under pressure. Old timers used a paper chart, watch, and depth gauge to do math on how long they needed to wait. Now a days your computer will just flash “interval” or something like that so you’ll have no info to go on if you do jump in.

As a childhood diver I had the idea we need 30 litres free air per minute at 10 meters depth (~30feet); there we have 2 Bars of pressure that compresses the air to half volume = 15 L /minute times 5 minutes gives 150 liters free air to compress into a tube. If you compress it to 300 Bar, you will need one tube of 0.5 litre or 2 tubes of 0.25 litres of compressed air for five minutes of shallow breathing. Do not forget you need a vessel capable to withstand 450 Bar at the normal security threshold for 300 Bar - which makes a very thick-walled tube, if it explodes it will have the same destructive effect as a military grenade. Not to take lightly!
