@@Kal-el087 PPI is an abbreviation for Payment Protection Insurance, many people here in the U.K are subject to cold callers trying to scam them by saying they have been missold PPI and then prompting victims to hand over their bank details. I was on benefits when they did the work programme and it was such a scam. You were told by the Job Centre that it wasn't a job and that you would only be expected to attend atleast once a week for a few hours. You were sent to work for charities as you weren't allowed to work for a for-profit company and you got an extra £25 a week in your JSA for doing the programme. The problem was that the charities played the system and demanded you to be there from 7:30am till 6pm everyday and when you'd tell them the Job Centre said you only had to attend for a few hours a week, they'd threaten to phone the Job Centre and tell them you were surplus to requirement and wasn't needed anymore and so you'd be sent somewhere else and have money taken off you. It was borderline slave labour and in cities, people were sent to for-profit places which literally did the same as the charities. In the end, the government cancelled the programme.

The most hilarious thing is - we owe it to ourselves, something the government doesn't bother explaining! It's not like personal debt, the Bank of England is the owned by the government, the country, its ours (or run on our behalf) that prints sterling. When the government 'borrows' money it writes a bond, know as a gilt - a bit of paper and swaps it with the bank of england for money - basically an IOU. If you borrow money from yourself and you also own the only place that can make this money and confirm its value - its very different from household debt. The bank of England is where it stops, it can't run out of money. We left the gold standard in the 1970s, money no longer had to reflect a value based on a commodity, gold - the value is only what the government says the money is worth, a promise - thats why it says it on every bank note 'i promise to ...' . It's all completely abstract and it's how all countries operate. As long as everyone agrees that money reflects the value that the government confirms it does it continues to work. The government has been doing this since 1700, to fund imperial conquests and in particular the Napoleonic wars, this borrowing was at 200% of GDP in the early 1800s - it peaked after WW1 and WW2 and has fallen ever since then rising with the 2008 banking crises and then the Covid pandemic. As a country we have to create debt to create more money to put it into the economy, if this didn't happen it would just be the same amount of money in the country moving back and fourth between people exchanging it for stuff - which means stagnation - in this way national debt is good and necessary if we want to live in the way we have since after WW2 ie steadily increasing material wealth of most of the population, consumer society with a huge variety of goods and services alongside necessary public services. The times of highest growth and increased standards of living are the times of high national debt postwar 1950s/60s - then dips and peaks in the 80s and 90s. In 2008 the bank crises saw something new and not seen before where private banks who massively gave credit with money they did not have to people who could never pay it back - the flaw in a system of exchange that is not based on anything material or real - at some point it all falls apart. Then the government had to print more money to bail them out - showing just how precarious a system not well regulated is and also showing money is made from nothing, and yes despite what politicians say of course there is a magic money tree - thats how new money is created. Its not the money that is important its the system, controls and people managing the flow of it that is important. Private banks didnt and the government didn't oversee them. If the government just prints endless amounts it makes money less valuable which is inflation. So public debt is really a set of levers, or controls the government uses to increase growth but also manage inflation.
