Jake, I found your channel in 2015 when I was deciding what to study and learning about what it's like to get a degree in the UK (I'm American). I was greatly inspired by your videos and got my degree in Computer Science in 2018. I have so many fond memories of watching your journey and still watch to this day! We love to see you post. Thanks a ton for everything

Absolutely crazy how much you have inspired much of my life and we don't even know each other. Cheers Jake.

Hi Jake, random comment: I started watching your videos maybe 7 years ago, about life at Cambridge; at the time I was a wee lad and had no intention of going but now I've rediscovered your videos only a few days after result's day, discovering I'll be starting at St John's College, Cambridge in October! Thanks for the stroll down memory lane, your videos are lovely little time capsule.

I am new here. It's really refreshing to see a real programmer doing real work. Often what is represented is a show off about how much programmers get to socialize, play games, or eat company provided snacks. I am interested in the process revolving around the work. Thank you, this is really good to see!

Hi Jake, welcome back! I wanted to ask you about the social aspect of the remote work culture. As a remote software engineer, I find it difficult to feel connected and synced with my team. Not only because we have much fewer stand-ups than most companies, but also because there's no dedicated time for informal conversations or activities. As a result, we don't communicate much, and on most days, there's nothing beyond work-related stuff. When I saw the planned social sessions at Monzo, I was intrigued. Are they as fun and essential as they seem to be? What are you personally getting out of them? I'm also interested in hearing how these meetings came to be: was it you and the team that took the initiative to start organizing it, or is it a company-wide approach? Thanks, and keep up the good work!
@streetster203 жыл бұрын
I'd be interested in this too... obviously some people don't want to hang around after hours (when socials are often organised for), would be nice if companies offered some dedicated time during the work-day to do something. I expect it's more of a culture/people issue to sort out...

Yay! Please do keep us updated with how things go, lovely. I've been finding that working remotely in my new job that I started in November has... not been the most ideal of introductions, and I absolutely hate working from home. I struggle getting those personal/work balances in (been finding myself in the wrong headspace at the wrong time!), so I've elected to go into the office one day a week. Cannot wait to not see these four walls during the day for once...

Jake, consider those Luminoodle 6500k USB Bias lighting led strips for putting around the rear edges of your monitors. I have them around both my 32 inch monitors and that’s all the lighting I use and it is plenty, plus there’s no glare on the screens as the light is behind them. They are only about £20 each on Amazon, according to the length you need. Probably saves their cost in electricity as well and I run them from the USBs on the monitors. Also have a more expensive MediaLight one on my TV, which is also very worth it.
