Greetings David. My wife and I were in Italy for our annual May/June vacation and your videos caught our eye. We had thoughts of semi-retiring there ourselves and we will go through you videos to gleen anything we can. Appreciate you time and effort you put into these posts!!! Also, I asked my wife if you reminded her of anyone and she immediately shot back with "Zamir (Iazamir Gotta - Russian), from Anthony Bourdain's show". Wondered if you had gotten any similar comments? Uncanny!!!

Well said, well done. I’ve been looking at ways for my partner and I to support ourselves and live outside of the U.S. Your reflection on “going outside of your comfort zone” is spot on and is exactly where I am at in my journey. It’s supportive to hear your perspective and recommendations for what I’m struggling with a bit right now. Grazie mille and ciao!

I really love getting comments like this! If it reaches one person and convinces them to think outside the box, and then eventually create a new income source then this video video was worth it! What are your thoughts and ideas?
@thibDave Жыл бұрын
@@DavidsDoseofItaly, absolutely agree. I’ve been wrestling with exploring my creative side and using KZbin as one of a few platforms to express myself. What holds me back is what I think does for many people, an emotional struggle to engage the unknown and push ourselves past our comfort zone as you said. To do that means being willing to suspend any worry about what sort of judgments or opinions that other people might express. You clearly enjoy sharing your perspectives and ideas in your videos, and it always comes across as genuine. That’s a great recipe, and one that nourishes your own creative nature and a need for help by myself and others. Your message resonates with me, as I’m sure it does for many others. I’m a teacher as well, am feeling a bit stagnant in the day to day of my work/life balance and nearing the time for considering retiring in about seven or eight years, possibly. I’ve been mapping out ideas and a plan for delving into using video and writing to engage with my own creativity. And, your messages and efforts have reached more than just me for sure. 😀 I have no doubt. Good job and many thanks for the inspiration!

When I first started on KZbin four years ago I watched other KZbin channels which help you become KZbinrs. The frequent theme I always heard is that one of the hardest steps is to just get started and they all recommended to get started before you’re even ready. More or less, I agree with that, but you have to put some thought into what your channel is going to be about. At least a general idea. To this day, it still is kind of weird how thousands of people have seen my face but it’s not like as soon as I leave my house I’m swamped by people asking for an autograph! Thank you 😊. I try to be as genuine as possible my videos, and I try to remember that you’re talking to real people on the other end of the camera and no one likes to be pandered to. If we’re talking just about teaching here in Italy, I stand by what I said in the video in the sense that I really don’t believe that it’s a proper profession for creating financial security and ultimately financial freedom. I would say that if you teach and you possess an entrepreneurial spirit, then perhaps you can transform your teaching knowledge into a business of some sort and as you can imagine, I’m all for creating a business online. On that note, I still think that making money online is a highly underrated opportunity and as you said before, I think most people don’t really dedicate themselves because it’s a step into the unknown and they want safety and guarantees. Those guarantees come in the form of a normal job where you collect wages in business, there are no guarantees, and that is what frightens most people. with that said, it is important to take calculated risks in order to mitigate them. I have heard it said that working a job as an employee is also a risk. If you think about it, you’re gambling that by working for somebody else, you will be able to save up enough money to retire comfortably. I am not saying that this is impossible. However, if you’re not good with money, if you’re not a saver and if you don’t know how to invest, then, I don’t see how you can possibly retire comfortably and at a decent age. I am trying to practice what I preach because at the moment I am not set up to retire comfortably however, as you can imagine, I am trying to fix this problem. I think to fix any problem that you yourself have caused you need to be self aware and to first identify what the problem is, how you caused it and what you are doing about it. I love these types of discussions Thank you for bringing it up! Keep in touch!

Nice to see you again. I've been mapping out some outlines for passive income businesses that would fit my lifestyle. I'm a freelance writer but in a very niche industry that won't provide income forever. I've been looking into self-publishing but also setting up an Amazon store, doing something with my Italy photos, etc. The toughest thing is finding a starting point! Too many ideas all over my desk! Time to narrow it down.

Your insight, suggestions, observations are going to be missed if you stay off for a year. I recently returned from Italy after a month. So often I was in a situation or neighborhood where I remembered a comment you (and others, offhandedly) made that gave me another perspective of what I was experiencing--nothing bad, just something you shared. Wandering in a city or town I would ask myself what must it be like to live here, is this where locals shop, what do they do in sweltering heat? Is this beach always busy on a Wednesday?! I had a greater appreciation for the common and historic sights, appreciating more than just veneer. If you disappear completely, know that you did contribute to others' enjoyment of your adopted home and helped us look past our comfort zones. There's always something new to learn if you just allow yourself the experience. Grazie mille.

Hey Joe ! Never ! I will not disappear don’t worry. Actually this comment really touched me and I appreciate it. @@DavidsDoseofItaly Great to hear. This trip (with my spotty but usually understood Italian) I was in soooo many small towns and cities. The people were charming, patient, impressed I would try local food and wine, wanted to shop there. This is my nature, but your encouragement sure helps keep me going. And it gets the more timid to get off their butts and live. Thanks for the good news.

This is one aspect of the Italians, that I always come to appreciate. They have so much patience for somebody who doesn’t speak the language but I think they appreciate it when you try and speak Italian because you are telling them directly and also indirectly that I want to understand you and I want to communicate with you Just this evening I was talking with my wife and I said that if our daughter happens to say something in English to somebody who doesn’t understand English, I highly doubt anybody will get offended Italy has many problems however, when they deserve a complement, I will certainly give it

David, Hi, Ive been follorwing you and appreciate so much all of your videos and info! I live in a rural wine town in Northern California and Im ready to go back to Europe. I lived and worked in the ski industry in Switzerland for 12 winters. But cannot afford that any more. I want to move to Italy, one of my favorite places on Earth! I've been worried about the beurocracy there and the difficulty with language, etc. But I will do anything to get out of the US! This used to be a great country when I was young (Im 62 now) but I cannot afford to retire here. Switzerland is awesome, but when you work for the ski area, there is NO housing at all. Im determined to make Pula, Sardinia my new home. Like you, I expect I might teach English in the beginning. How much did you charge? Or did you go through a company? They don't pay much at all. I really miss Europe, and I cant wait to be back over there. My language skills are beginner, but I hope they will get better quickly. I completely related to your things you miss, being speaking your native. I found that it was really isolating without the languages. Basics are great, but you lose patience with yourself and the others. It's a bit like being a kindergarten kid. Any tips appreciated! Elisabeth Elisabetta! LOL!!!

Hi Elizabeth, and thank you very much for reaching out! Your words resonated with me and I really do hope that you find a way to make sardenia your home. Unfortunately, I’ve never been there but I’ve heard good things about it. I wouldn’t worry about the language too much because Italians are very patient. However, you do want to at least hire somebody or at least have an Italian friend for important bureaucratic matters or something as simple as talking to the plumber. You know, I get many comments from people who are looking to leave the US and retire and who tell me that the US is not the country they remember. When I left it, I was certainly not retirement age and I still am not now however, in retrospect, it was a good decision, because I think it will be more possible to retire here. Have you considered living in northern Italy, where you can be closer to the skiing industry? Whatever you do, I wish you the best of luck !

What about opening a laundromat in Rome? Is there an abundance or none. Self serve washing machines and dryers and offer wash and fold, drop off service. If there's apartment buildings its a convenient service that can be done more efficiently than in the apartment. How do you think it will do?

Thank you David for the self publishing info. I am well past retirement age and because of things that have happened in my life if I am to get my Italian citizenship, (I've applied), to be able to move there, I need a source of income. I never really fit the 9-5 corporate rut anyway. The income I have her will go away if I leave, with the exception of some US Social Security which is not enough. I actually am a good writer. I've had some small pieces published in various media. I could do the self-publishing writing without a ghost but I have to find a topic that has a market I'm interested in and I need to organize my thoughts. Fortunately, my long term memory is elephantine even if I can't remember why I walked into the next room. haha. I don't know if I could afford a mentor at this point. I need to develop a plan, get organized and work it. I don't have the money to invest in proper KZbin equipment and I don't have anyone who could act as my camera person. I am alone. Also, to learn the editing would probably take me a while. Since I haven't worked or been in school for some time, I am behind the curve on tech, although not hopeless. I am an artist, a painter but art is such a subjective thing, that is not reliable. I really think if I can learn the ins and outs of self-publishing and find a subject that creates sustainable interest, I will be good. The great thing is I can start here, in Israel and then keep going when I move to Italy. So again "grazi" (joke) I will rewatch this video until I get it and its various elements straight in my brain. P.S. Passive income suits our Italian entrepreneurial natures. And I think it's a whole lot more humane than being a wage slave.
@DavidsDoseofItaly Жыл бұрын
Hi Meira. my coach has an interesting expression. Fino alla bara ⚰️ si impara. Or as we say in English, you never stop learning. I absolutely believe that the self publishing model does not have an age limit and as a matter fact, there are people in my group who are in their 70s and have started making passive income do not underestimate the power of the Internet, and I think it’s simply a matter of recognizing which of your talents and skills can be a value to other people. Once you realize that simply find a way to get it in front of people. It’s going to take some research and hard work, but in the end it will pay off. I agree, 100% Once my self publishing business takes off (I will make it work) I no longer want to earn wages and live my life based on that kind of job. Slightly off-topic my best friend did a job interview on Monday and the job unfortunately only offered one week vacation and five sick days Absurd It angers me how people are used as rats in a maze.

Excellent content, David. Thanks for putting this video together and providing the inspiration to pursue these avenues. If someone is not intending to make a permanent move to Italy (at least not for a bit) but instead might be spending several months out of the year there, are there any issues you think we should consider related to time in country, taxes in Italy vs the U.S. (for example), and residency status. I am not yet a dual citizen of Italy (that may take 2-3+ yrs at least, though my wife is 100% Italian and is well along in the process for Italian dual citizenship by descent), so the tax and residency period considerations could be important (with income still coming from U.S. sources).
