Ask him! A lot of dedication and passion, endless of efforts! Listening, learning (tunes) jazz music. Transcribing music, analyzing... there is not one best way but you can study with someone already knows good directions.

Don't worry about "music theory" Part. Theory wont make you a better player. Theory makes you to understand music which you are learning (better)

Major scale, melodic minor, harmonic minor, penta tonics (Maj & min) and chromatic scales... if you don't know the chords... nothing will work!

Preparation. Learn chords, triads, 7th chords... arpeggios..then transcribe a lot solos so you will learn from great examples. Try Charlie Christian ROSE ROOM. Learn R 3 7 swing groove, Bb Blues, Bb Jazz Blues.

There's no way to approximate that... it really depends on how you approach the instrument and how much do you enjoy the learning process behind music theory and practice !!! 0:43 it's melodic minor from whole step below dominant chords works over any resolving dominant 0:59 is also melodic minor but this time a half step above dominant chords its also works over any resolving dominant what i mean by resolving is functioning dominant btw its called tension and resolution good luck
