Hi Kenneth, More than likely, it was the geometry on the carbide, verses the High Speed Steel toolbit you sharpened. Most carbide tooling takes more tool pressure than a positively ground piece of HSS. Welcome aboard and thanks for the comment…

I want your job, it is a great deal more enjoyable than computers ever were with maybe one exception of helping design and build an artificial intelligence system for the U.S. Air Force. It makes me happy to know you are helping to preserve those little trains, they hold so many childhood memories.

Neat trick with the lead counterweight. Gonna have to try that myself. Thanks for sharing!

I use the dog to drive the rotation of my part because the centers can't provide enough fiction to do the driving. Also you can endo the part and still be turning your part on a true running set up.

Another learning Video, I have always seen a Dog used with a face plate, I had no idea that there was lube for the Centers. And last is the lead. What great information we all getting for free ! It was not that long ago that you had to get a machinist drunk before he would spill any information/ Thanks a bunch Keith. I am getting-er done out here in the Rocky Mountains.

Oh. Now I see. Honestly you make everything so perfectly and painstakingly. Very nice to see that. Lotsa things to learn from you. Not only the technical stuff but also things like patience and perseverance. :)

I've also put a clamp on the cutting tool, and hung a peice chain on the clamp to stop harmonic vibration... I like your center drill, center hole adjustment I hadn't seen that before. (Slick idea!) :o) O,,,

It is easier to loosen than tighten, without changing your stance. Your stronger pulling than pushing and with a left hand thread it makes for a quick and easy release. ;{)-----

I have seen some of them tapered and some not, or very slightly tapered. The very first time I had seen a tracer attachment in action, back in California, they were making new wheels, for a cement mold spinner, designed after the real deal, rail road wheels and were tapered also. ;{)-----

Ok I see now - so the center drills could be off on the ends but you dial that in by adjusting the tailstock so that the run out across the axle is close to 0. Thanks!

Kieth, my name is Kenneth. I have a small 12X36 gap bed lathe. I recently turned out a new shaft for a 3 phase Baldor motor, that i'm perverting into a permenant magnet ac generator. Due to cost considerations, I used a torsion bar out of a GMC 4x4 front end for my stock. its a hard alloy, I have no Idea, but it's not as hard as tool steel. Heres the funny part. My little bandsaw knawed right thru it, But at 180 rpm, a carbide chattered bad switched to softer HSS. no chatter good surface. WHY?

hi keith there seems to be no taper on the wheel treads is the norm for the US. in the UK we have tapered wheelsets ,flixtonman.

Keith why would you turn on centers over, say, using a lathe that has a large enough through-chuck to just turn the end down? Or, did this piece not fit through your chuck? Great videos I enjoy watching!

To hold the trueness of the part, my three jaw runs out a bit and by running it between centers you can, remove and put it in or turn it around and it would still be running true. ;{)-----

What is the point of the High pressure lube?
@KeithFenner
@KeithFenner 9 жыл бұрын
The lube was designed to take the high pressures of such a small contact point and keep the metals from galling. ;{)-----

looks like you need to turn up your rpm, cutting speed*1000/(3,14*Diamiter) = rpm

You are obviously a competent machinist. I would suggest removing that ring your are wearing as well as your watch when running the lathe. And while your press doesn't rotate, things can happen... I'd wear a face shield. Otherwise, am looking forward to seeing your other videos.
