I used to love working on this one back when my arcade had pinball machines. The other top fav's would be "Funhouse" and "Twilight Zone". About 30 years ago I took a job as just an arcade attendant. With my basic electronic background and mechanical background.. I nailed a manager/tech job in a few months and shipped out to Albany, NY to run my own store! I love doing pinball repair. Sadly most arcades no longer have pinball's. Most of the 'techs' get lost in the 'matrix'.... (Those that work on these games will get the reference.) Have a super New Years!

pinball machine popularity has come back in a big way the last 10 years. there is a local pool hall that has removed half their pool tables and now has 87 pinball machines. i did say 87. so many great titles there, the owner is a big time pin head. he has attack from mars, mid-evil madness, bride of pinbot, funhouse, black knight 2k, circus voltare, terminator 2, star trek NG, ripley's believe it or not, dialed in, no good goofers too much to list. he also offers repair services. i have an apollo 13 with a board that's acting up and he's going to fix it for me. he said under $100..... im very happy with that. he probably has close to a dozen customer machines he is working on right now.

It amazes me how these machines are now considered vintage (time flies too fast sometimes). My version of vintage was the old 1968 Chicago Coin Playtime pinball machine my dad had during my childhood in the mid 80s. By the 90s, I was a teenager and would regularly visit the arcades, but by that point I was already hooked on video games, so all the amazing pinballs never got my full attention. The closest I'll probably get to any of these amazing mechanical marvels is my virtual pinball machine I built recently. It's an adequate substitute, but boy do I want to get a few of these mechanical machines from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. One from each decade will do for me!

They make black cabinet art for bride, instead of purple. Just found that out yesterday. I just converted mine to LED last week and it is definitely worth it. So many colors on this machine. Also the heat was insane before LEDs. My pf inserts were all popping out, luckily not cupped or worn. Heat gun and piece of wood pushed em right back.

In Clemson, there’s a bar called “Nick’s”. Back in the late 80’s, we played the heck out of an old “Paragon” wide-body. Dr. Wagner was tired of having it fixed, plus we could pretty much rack up free games all day on it. So he bought us a brand-new “The Machine - BOP” round about ‘90 or ‘91. Blew us all away. I played the heck out of that games while I was there for grad school. I read recently that they finally had to retire it, just couldn’t keep it fixed economically. I wonder what they’re playing at Nick’s now?

i have a bride of pinbot in my collection. it's a fantastic pin, i love that game. actually my "bride" asked me to find her one, so i did. we have had it probably close to 10 years now. also in my collection i have a 1980 firepower, 1986 high speed, 1988 jokerz, and a 1995 sega apollo 13. i put LEDs in ALL my games, including firepower. several reasons why i did this. 1. they typically last much, much longer. change them once and your usually done 2. less (or probably almost no) heat. heat destroys backglasses, translights, playfeild plastics, and GI connectors. i really hate the damage the heat causes. i had to replace the backglass for firepower and the translight on high speed. they were in really really bad shape. 3. i actually like the way it looks. nice bright uniform lighting on the playfeild. i have always gone with LED's that werent excessively bright, but the lighting is more uniform. the LED's usually mean you can avoid ruining things. i look at these games as timeless artwork, and i do what i can to preserve them. i bought the backglass and translight close to 10 years ago but i have over $500 into those 2 items. i installed a LED DMD in my apollo 13, and if the other displays fail over time, i will replace them with LED displays.

Joe - one upgrade to the power board (yes, I know another shop did the work on it) is the ezSBC LM323k replacement voltage regulator. It's a digital regulator, so it emits very little heat, and it produces a much more stable +5vdc. Also works great on Skee-Ball CPUs.

I suspect the issue may be one of several things. 1) The position sensor that determines which face is being shown and relays the information to the CPU is not working properly or is incorrectly aligned leading to the motor being in a loop and not stopping. 2) There could be a Problem with the motor control circuits. 3) I wonder if there could be a switch stuck on that is causing this.

Nice video as usual! Looking forward to seeing the rest of this project. 29:55 - with NVRAM you lose the clock and thereby a fun feature: The birthdays of the developers are stored in the game and the machine plays a happy birthday tune and shows a message on the respective days (but this needs the clock to work, obviously). Also, it is normal that the head spins a couple times during startup until it finds its home position. The game can only "identify" face 4 by a switch on the head box; all other positions need to be derived from that. The cabinet art is really pale as you can tell by the heart around the start button which should be red. Maybe consider using the "BOP 2.0" style decals that I personally think look so much cooler than the original ones. Cheers.

It did cycle through face 4 a few times, so I'd suspect that switch being misaligned or not working.

I was wondering if you ever used it on the connector plugs/headers/edge connectors? I would think it would help with slowing oxidation/corrosion. but am a little afraid of it causing shorts between the pins/edge connectors.

The face is suppose to stop when the robot face is up. It could be that a switch is no good or that it is not there. Or could be that sus wiring that had tape one it. I saw at least two places it had electrical tape on it. I would check that and then put heat shrink tubing after figuring if the wires are all correct.

JOES CLASSIC, Any reasons why they are using TRIACS for the GI Lamps?
@litz132 жыл бұрын
Two reasons ... one it's 6.3vac (so you need a triac to switch it) ... two the CPU needs to be able to control the GI, and the easiest way to do that is with a triac ... One really cool thing WPC does (pioneered on BOP) is duty cycle the GI lamps to achieve 7 levels of brightness. It does this by detecting the "zero cycle" point of the AC power supply, and cutting the triac on/off as needed to achieve the desired brightness level.
@waynegram89072 жыл бұрын
@@litz13 How is the CPU detecting the zero cycle point of the AC power supply? The CPU is outputting a PWM signal to the GI amps GATE PIN of the Triac's?

If a coil locks up and blows a fuse on the way to the board can it still damage the board and or transistors that drive the coil? Thank you
@litz132 жыл бұрын
Typically on WPC, a coil won't lock up unless the driver has already failed, as that's what usually causes the lockup. If the proper fuses are in place (3a SB for most coils) a locked coil will blow the fuse long before the PCB burns.
@litz132 жыл бұрын
Actually, just got to that place in the video. Yes, absolutely, if a coil locked up and melted (so it's dead shorted) it will absolutely destroy the driver that controls it, when a fixed board is reinstalled.
@jasn20312 жыл бұрын
@@litz13 So the fuse will not prevent this? Thank you
@litz132 жыл бұрын
@@jasn2031 it's a slow-blo fuse. The expectation from the manufacturer was part of the repair on the part of the technician (remember these were designed for commercial use) would be to fix the failure, then fix the PCB.
