@@ryanhuestis2955 I have a shut off time before bed by 3 to 4 hours, but that's all I can do as I get home 7-8pm. I walk roughly 5 miles at work, then hit another mile on the treadmill. I lift anywhere between 50-60 lbs at work, many times. I can deload 900 lbs in 5 minutes. So I stay pretty active. As for electronics, I have forced myself to go to sleep with no electronics and I'm still wide awake. I don't even take naps in the middle of the day. I can't anyway. Best advice I was ever given with my training, nutrition etc is "don't let perfect be the enemy of good". Just turn up, do the work, eat the best you can etc and progress comes. Drilling down into every little detail trying to make it all optimal just drives you mad and distracts.

I love your down-to-earth attitude towards training. I remind myself every day that it doesn't matter that I'm not hitting my goals yet, I will one day and the important thing is that I am on my way there. Every day. I go to the gym at 6 every morning, would go earlier if it opened earlier. I love it. It means that most days I start off with something I enjoy a lot. And some days I get it over with first thing in the morning if it just feels a bit like a chore. No time to overthink and make excuses. And training in the morning means meeting the same people every day. We're all there to work on ourselves and it's too early to do anything but that. So there's this focus with everyone in the gym and it motivates me a lot being in this little journey with the same people every day.

Last year med student here with interest in sleep science. Biggest myth in society is that night owls (ppl with late circadian rythm (majority)) is lazy and that they’re night owls by choice. Therefore classic tips like ”learn to sleep faster” and ”i just decide to go up this time” are not so thought through. Before we woke up early as fudge to take care of the cows n shit (which unfortunately society set as norm), ppl slept in different timespans, some late and some early, which minimzed time when no one guarded the fire. When i work night i stay awake easier than collegues that usually are good at ”sleeping fast” but society calls me lazy bcs early wakers are normally the ideal we’ve set. Discussions about sleep are often one sided and we hear tips that just dont work for most of us, especially since studies shows that early sleepers seldom follow all these tips. I recommend the book ”why we sleep” if ure interested in this topic (sry eng)

Exactly what I do and why I do it. I’m naturally an early riser and instead of 1) risking procrastination with my session, 2) risking life throwing wrenches in my plans, 3) spending too much time stressing about “if you don’t sleep 9 hours a night you will never get gains and die 10 year early” or “if you train before 3 pm you are 50% weaker” - I hop on my bike and show up in a mostly empty gym before sunrise, get my session in, and feel like I’ve already accomplished honest work when most are just starting to wake up...so yeah, being a member of the morning crew works wonders for me!

As someone who just recently hopped onto the 5AM train, I’m really glad to see this video from you Alan. I’m a senior in my last year of becoming a Doctor, and I’ve found that moving my workout routines to the early morning have benefitted overall health and temperament greatly. Excuses? Tiredness? Too much effort? All that anxious stuff flew out the window once I committed. Cuz it wasn’t about pursuing ‘gains’, but structuring my life that would be the most beneficial and satisfying long term. Doesn’t matter if I have clinical procedures all day, 8-6/7, I get my workout in first thing, I feel like I can tackle the rest. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and experiences Alan, appreciated as always.

For me personally i feel like I need to be doing something important after going to the gym first thing in the morning in order for me to do it consistently and enjoy it. I used to wake up at 4am (sometimes 3:30am) to be at the gym at around 5am and get in my training, breakfest, shower etc. before school at 8am. I did this consistently for months and at the time it wasn't even hard. It felt good and became a habit. Now I've graduated high school and I currently don't really have a consistent schedule consisting of work, studying etc. I've found that I have absolutely zero motivation/desire to go to the gym early now and I think it's because once I'm done I can technically just go home and chill/sleep so why even bother... Long story short I feel like you need to fit your gym sessions into a schedule sort of like work that you can't call in sick to whenever you feel like it, in order for it to become a true habit that you just never skip. There needs to be a greater purpose for waking up early and getting it done first thing in the morning and me not feeling any desire to do that atm is also a sign that I've got too much time on my hands and need to get my fingers out my ass...

I will never wake up at 4-5AM, I usually go to sleep on those hours. I prefer the night training. Everyone should focus on their best times and way of life. Alan is right about that, that it doesn't matter. The fact is, if you do what is possible for you to go to the gym and lift, get stronger and have fun, you won. Thanks for inspiring us and giving us tons of knowledge Alan!

After 1,5 years of following you and transforming myself into you, I've discovered the first thing I just can not do and that is 6.5 hours of sleep because then I would completely fall apart. But I guess we'll have to if we want to train people and own a gym. Thank you for sharing.

So i've noticed there are no mirrors in your gym. I wonder why is that the case, do you want to put emphasis on the fact that it is a powerlifting gym and not a bodybuilding one? I'm legit curious because mirrors have been of help to me especially on my squat and deadlift form.

If you fall asleep straight when you hit the pillow that's a sign of too few sleep in the recent time. There's enough studies that show 7-9 hours is essential
@johnnyclaymore6725
@johnnyclaymore6725 3 жыл бұрын
Optimal* "Essential" implies that an organism is incapable of maintaining life without it. Also, the 7-9 hours is true for most people, however, some people are able to maintain normal physiological processes on less sleep. It depends on the person. Keep in mind: studies =/= law. Studies only add support for a hypothesis/theory. If you can continuously support a habit (like getting 6 hours of sleep) without diminishing quality of life, then go for it. If you need 7-9 hours, go for it.

It is rare that you'll think yourself off of the couch and into the gym but it's easy to think your way out of a workout. One of the best skills to develop is the ability to shut down the conversation inside your head and (at the risk of sounding like a commercial) just do it.

100 percent agree with you Alan. First thing in the morning is the best time to lift/run/etc. I'm definetly weaker, but it's always better to workout when you're weaker than to wait until the end of the day and not work out at all.

Coffee and bit of a cream or butter. I always train on empty stomach. If I eat anything in the morning, I'm going straight back to the bed. Brain fog is just unbearable. Empty stomach makes me focused af. After workout 1500+ kcal breakfast. Next meal is 1500 kcal dinner.

Early morning workouts are the best. Especially when paired with metal. I started training in the morning when I realised it was far easier to shape my day around training if I got it out of the way and done with first thing, have a shower, eat breakfast, and go on with my day.
