Excellent video mate! Haha, I thought you put a Sony company plug in there. I am sure you are protected against stuff like this on ebay, look up your consumer rights, a lot of people don't know their rights and this shit happens. The person you bought it off gave a false description and therefore the contractual agreement you made is void. Ebay should be getting on top of this crap, it is annoying.

I just got a some fake 57's and 58's. They were free and knew they were in fact fake. Only plugged them in and tested them. Haven't recorded yet to know what obvious difference they have. You get what you pay for and if it was full price you should just buy from manufacture of authorized dealers. Sorry about your screw

I am pretty sure I got some of the exact same fake 57's. Everything is identical to yours, even the resistance over the diaphragm. The thing that really gave it away to me was when I decided to do the transformer mod to some of them (remove the transformer).... there is no transformer at all, just a bit of metal wrapped in newspaper, and the wires from the diaphragm are going straight passed it to the XLR.... Not happy.

Ok, I don't know about anyone else...but I know that there are people out there that are picky and just HAVE to have the BEST...the ORIGINALS, or the "real deal" when it comes to gear and equipment. I myself found a great deal on some mics made by Pyle Audio called the PDMIC78, a clone to the Shure SM57. And I honestly CANNOT tell the difference in the tone, output or sound quality of the two. The Shure SM57 is around $100.00, the Pyle PDMIC78 is $30.00 - $40.00 and sounds EXACTLY the same. I have four of them that I use in my studio, and I do have a legit Shure SM58...I can't tell any differences at all. I also have a transformer adapter that the mics plug into, and plug the adapter into the PA, amp, mixer, etc...and they all sound awesome as far as I am concerned. So I don't see what all the damn fuss is all about. Whatever works and works just as good as any original...that's what I use. I am a poor musician and home recording artist...I use what I can afford, and so far I have been extremely lucky in the gear that I have bought. My home studio could not sound or perform any better than it does right now...with or without the "brand name" gear that is expensive as hell, when the clones or copies do just as good a job. Don't believe everything that you hear about people bashing the so-called "fakes" out there...most of which actually sound BETTER than the expensive "real deal" gear. Trust me...I know.

To be honest I was completely unaware there was such things,but either this thing is real or it's a seriously seriously good fake. What bothers me is that it shows very few signs of being real or fake...... gerrr I bought it from amazon 2 years ago aswell...

the new sm57's do in fact have a sticker instead of a metal band. i think the easiest thing to check on your mic here is the shure logo on the sticker, if the R is raised above the other letters then it is definitely a fake. also the sticker on the new sm57's has a matte finish (non shiny) most of the fakes have a shiny sticker. thumbs so people dont get worried by there brand new 57 not having a metal band and yelling at there honest music dealer :P

Well i know some of us musicians have to budget when it comes to buying gear, but i never buy anything second hand unless its been tested by me or a friend, i know its an $110 [ + $10 - ] mic but its kind of worth buying it for that price if you don't want to get ripped off.. and plus Ebay has always been a scammers paradise. just stick to Musiciansfriend or hell even Amazon. but thanks for the heads up, i just got a SM57 and 58. for my recording system, and they work awesome.

@kedge0803 Hey man, so does my brand new one from Guitar Center. Actually I have 3 brand new ones out of a Shure drum mic kit and I know they are legit, I'm not gonna sweat it. I also have 2 Ebay fakes that definitely read close to 600 Ohms, and they sound much more harsh and tinny than the GC ones. I think the sound is a dead giveaway, and if your reads 17 Ohms and sounds good, I'm sure it's legit. Holler back with comments / questions.

i just got a shure mic off ebay and i even messaged the guy saying iv got a national dip in electronics (which i have) and he assured me it was real and its a fake. it looked exactly like yours with a sticker. when i unscrewed it it even looked like it had a transformer but i measured the resistance nd it measured 560ohms so i took the glue out and it was just a ferrite core the wires went straight to the xlr connector! what kind of dick rips someone off after being ripped off im not reseling it

Talked to a Shure tech and they told me that buying a Shure product from a non-authorized dealer was a guaranteed way to get a counterfeit. Anyone wanting to buy a genuine Shure should go to their website and check out the nearest authorized dealer. I also asked them how to spot the fakes and they said they couldn't tell people because it would only serve to make even harder-to-spot fakes in the future. When buying from ebay, ask seller if they can guarantee it to be genuine.

@iankyoko Yeah great, we all have to learn some time, but you didn't 'already know' that it was a fake though did you ?. Thats the point I made, that it is really controlled by our greed and safety net advice on 58's, and also the hurry to grab what we think is a bargain when wiser millions see the same ebay listing. Hence your mic wasn't 'so great', was it ? Do some homework, I just got 4 x Red5 RVD30 mics for £99. Same (poss better) as 57's and 58's and not cheap made because of the price.

Hi, i ended up getting a real one. My multimeter was too strong and i couldn't use it to test it. But i took it to a proper music shop and they said it's genuine after listening to it. A few of them said it looks fake when they first saw it. But after they looked at a real one they said no it looks exactly the same. Is there a significant difference in sound that is so noticable? I've never heard a fake one. But after they listened to it they instantly said it's a genuine.

What about the multimeter test? My SM57 has a white box instead of the yellow of yours and two holes instead of three. The rest is pretty much the same. Is the multimeter test a safe way to prove mine is fake? There's no information about it on the Shure website, product manual or anywhere else than "Fake Shure SM57" articles on the web.

@WorkingManStudios Well I'd rather trust my own ears than someone else's. Nothing against you and your assumptions, I just would rather hear the difference myself to know if even buying a fake would be worth the money. Could you please post a sound comparison test?

I hate eBay, everyone always says to buy gear from them because it's cheap, I tried to buy a wah from eBay but lost the auction by a landslide. It's way easier to just go buy used gear from Guitar Center. You can trust them more too. (And return it!)

I definitely have two Ebay fakes identical to the fake in this video, but interestingly my Brand new SM 57 from Guitar Center only reads 17 Ohms between pins 2 and 3 with my multimeter, the fakes read about 587ish. What the heck is up with that?

@maccafan10 I have related it all to ebay and Paypal and Paypal has refunded me. I never knew about this counterfeiting ring with Shure SM58. I didn't look up reviews and details on the Shure SM58 because I already knew that it was a great microphone.

Mine has most signs of genuine shure, but has the sticker at the top, the lettering is not raised though on the R. The wires are Blue and yellow not green and yellow and has the EB on the pcb. the grill is slightly dull in colour. the case is exactly like the one in this video. Although i have 2 holes at the bottom, all the xlr connections are numbered aswell as the shure lettering on it.

@bluemeanieee Well the case looked very different to the one in this video. The image on my case is the SM57 lying flat on its side in the centre of the image on a black background (looks like an amplifier or something). And very top left it says "Shure" and very bottom left it says "SM57" So like I said, very different to the one in this video so I assume the design has changed sometime.

NOTE: I would just like to point out that I purchased a legit SM57 (I bought it from a respectable company. It weighed the correct amount, had the correct wiring, and came with a full warranty that I have registered. It also didn't sound like crap) and the grill was a dark grey and the logo was a sticker. These points are still things to look out for but it's worth knowing that on real 57s, at least these things can be exactly the same as the fakes (I have also purchased a fake so I know!!)

Amazingly, I've just borrowed a Beta SM57A from a friend, and it's a bloody fake to..it weighs about 100grams less than the real Shure and has yellow tape between the capsule and body when you unscrew the popshield. Also the leatherette carrying case is smooth and not patterned as you show...BE VERY CAREFUL, people!! Thanks for posting, your vid really helped me determine that this mic is a bloody fake as I was going to buy!! Instead, I have ordered a Beta SM57A from a reputable dealer....

Another sugestion, do not run in an ebay sale that has a stock photo... I always purchase from listings with an original amatuer photo of what they are selling. It helps further if the seller posts a video showing the product up for bids works... HOPE THIS HELPA
