I was hospitalized with Rhabdomylyosis two months ago. I was in a bootcamp class, on my sixth week we did the "100 workout" which is a series of 8 exercises and 100 reps of each exercise. The next day it hurt to raise my hands. 5 days later I had severe swelling in both my arms. My family physician misdiagnosed me with simple muscle fatigue. That night my urine changed colour which is what saved me from severe damage. Hospitalized for 3 days on IV fluids. Doctors had not seen this in a healthy 27 year old. I was off work for 3 weeks like Amy. I now do physiotherapy twice a week to rebuild my arm muscles. They still are not where they used to be. Thank you for bringing awareness to this illness. Listen to your body and when you feel fatigued, STOP.

you have just so much muscle fiber, when Rhabdo happens, the muscle fiber you lost will never come back. You have to work with what you have and build on that.

Cross Fit gyms are known for this. They even make jokes about Uncle Rhabdo. Most places like that are opened up by people who really have no clue what they are doing and they push way too hard. Listen to your body always!!

Agreed. Crossfit is just too much. way too much. We can be fit and healthy without pushing that hard. I think for them it's all about pride, and being able to show what you can do, but they're going past safe limits. Totally not worth it.

I had complete kidney failure from Rhabdomolysis. I got it from a prescribed med for neurological pain. I know this is going to sound motherly and some will say the doctor's would never prescribe you anything that would harm you, I've heard them all believe me, but read all the possible side effects and ADVERSE reactions (yes, they are different, one more serious than the other) before you take anything you have never taken before. Even antibiotics you haven't experienced before. your life can depend on it. My GP, not the neurologist who did the prescribing, in all his years of practice had only seen one other case of Rhabdomolysis and that was in a young man who exercised for 3 hours straight. He died. I was blessed that I had the lesser reaction. Now I'm paranoid about taking any med, prescribed or not. Just my 2...

kail mike your body will tell you and you need to listen. It's ok to feel a slight burn but you shouldn't keep pushing past it. You shouldn't also push yourself to the point of vomiting or black out. If you feel you need a break, take it. Doesn't matter who's harping on you. You matter most.

Obviously if something happens like what happens to her, that is a sign. Changes in color of urine to dark or bloody color, loss of menstrual cycle, vomiting after or during workout, etc. Its normal to feel a bit of soreness but anything extreme is not normal, especially depending on the intensity of your workout.

I'm a type 1 Diabetic and I had been having muscle pain and spasms in my extremities for months in 2016 for months even asking my doctor at the time to send me to PT but he didn't think it was warranted. Well, my ass ended up with Rhabdo severely so much I was in a Rehabilitation hospital for 5 weeks and crutches for 3 months. I changed doctors. It's rare but you can get it with metabolic issues too and I've had a Whipple so. I can tell when I get muscle cramps to amp up my vitamins/minerals intake. I got to be careful. It's tough.

Once at netball training, we had to do a drill and everytime we dropped the ball we had to do ten pushups. One of the girls on my team was a bit of an a-hole and would drop it on purpose, so eventually we did almost 80 (I think) push-ups, on basically gravel and since then I’ve had really bad rib issues and back issues (I’m very bad at push ups)

I would never do CrossFit. Normal weight training with minimal repetitions and lower weights help you achieve fitness with less energy expenditure. That, plus walking, hiking, and biking within sensible limits allows your body to do what it is designed to do. I do exactly 30 minutes of weight training three times a week on 8 different machines, using no more than 20-30 lbs for about 15 total repetitions per muscle group and refuse to break a sweat. I routinely walk or hike a couple of miles a day and try to get at least 4-6 mile hikes in once a week. I easily do a 15 mile backpacking trip with a 30 lb pack at any time (1/4 of my weight). I think endurance comes from lots of walking. Weight bearing exercises should only be used to keep your bone structure healthy and not for endurance.

For me personally, I knew I was doing an intense workout but I never would think I would be hospitalized from working out. I simply thought I would be sore for a few days and I would stretch it out, refuel and be okay. I never would have thought something like this would happen to me.

Bob Smith think about the setting of a crossfit gym though. They have think it's fun to push yourself to dangerous limits. Watch their pull up contests (or whatever they call the move that's supposed to be pull ups). They literally do it until their skin falls off and blisters, then laugh about it. It's improper form and coaching, and unsafe amounts of weight. And they just cheer while a 100 lb person tries to lift 500 lbs over their head. It's so bad.

I would suggest swimming. Not leisurely swimming, but a beginner swim team. It's excellent cardio, excellent muscle strength training and greatly improves coordination. Plus, you decide how fast/slow you go, and you can start really easy. I used to be fairly overweight, swimming made me into a much more athletic person and has helped me improve in other sports. I do competitive now, like hardcore, and I train 15 hours a week.
