Old now but 3 or 4 time (I've forgotten) St. Louis Track Club Runner of the Year, US Senior bronze medalist in the tri and so many state age titles I've lost track (20ish). Still stay in shape. Proud of this young lady. Watching her run, I had tears on my face and goosebumps on my arms. My biggest hope is that it stays fun and her undercarriage stays glued together. Injuries suck. Really liked her coach's attitude. He's lucky to have such a high performing athlete but she's lucky to have him also. Ms. Tuohy please remember one thing. No matter how much pressure the outside world puts on you, it's "just running".... and you da.... well know how to run.

And the second time I witness her speed in real life was toward the end of the cross country season during the Coach Invitational at Wappingers falls NY. I finished my race around 30 minutes already. People stand at the finish line waiting for her to cross the finishing line. When she finished the race, even though we don't go to the same school, I can't help but to feel the honor to see her race in person and I was so happy Umm...I don't remember quite well since it was more than a month ago. I think it was the 3k race, and her time was around 16:20! (The fastest boy on my team's time was only 16:21) edit: 5k not 3k. 3 miles

Her times are amazing for sure but she is far from being world class. Which btw isn’t saying much considering how you can count on one hand how many athletes were world class at 16

Correction: she was 6th in the world for any age at least for indoor in the 5000m. That doesn’t change the fact that she isn’t world class yet. Especially since she hasn’t topped her times since her sophomore year, arguably one of the greatest sophomore years for any athlete male or female

Here are some cross country tips: 1: Run Conservatively, meaning like, don't EVER be one of those people who SPRINT in the beginning, there Lactate will build up quickly, (Lactate is pain), kinda jog but a little faster in the beginning, so you can wipe out the people who sprinted in the beginning by the end. 2: Week prior to your race, eat fruits, vegetables, Chicken, Almonds, Lot's of Healthy choices, I also recommend water and Gatorade for electrolytes. (Gatorade is a good liquid to consume on the way to the meet, lets say on the way there) 3: Stick to the same meals the day before your race, since your body is use to the foods and liquids your consuming, your body knows how to conserve the energy. 4: Do muscle building workouts, muscle will help you get faster, though there could be cons to building muscle, but this is optional. 5: Have fun! Don't tell yourself you can't do it, because you can, you need to train your mind to tell you that you CAN do it! Your body is more than capable to do it, your mind is whats not capable, so tell yourself you can do ANYTHING, cause you can!

I was running in the Denver Cherry Creek Sneak back in about 1989 and I kept trying to keep pace with a young blonde haired female -- she was kicking my butt. It was killing me trying to get ahead and stay ahead of her. Finally, I realized it was Melody Fairchild the State Girl's High School Cross Country Champion -- then it was OK. I ended up with my best time ever trying to keep up with her.

It seems that running is diminutive of developing a full female figure. Is this something that remains a factor to sacrifice in order to run? Do relationships with female runners ever develop as long as they are in training. I would like to see a balanced life for Katelyn, and all the runners. I am from the old school and this is something that would be a factor in attraction to the opposite sex! Has life changed to accommodate female runners? Am I just being too commonplace? Jog. Or just start by walking very fast, if jogging leaves you breathless. You should train most of your running (especially at first) at a pace you can comfortably breathe and talk to a running mate.
@fishofgold6553

+Emmah Wittwer I suppose it's partly because your body is still getting used to exercise. It's bound to improve, especially if you pace yourself. If you're new to jogging, then just jog at whatever pace allows you to avoid dying, no matter how slow. Now this piece of advice might utterly confound you: breathe through your nose, even during exercise. It's also better for you than mouth-breathing while at rest and during sleep. All of this, too, however, will take some getting used to as your nasal passages widens to adapt to the change. There's a book out there call 'The Oxygen Advantage' by Simon McKeown. I admit I haven't read it, but I'm sure it's fascinating because I've seen videos of his on KZbin and I've learned a lot from them. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpjXnXR3ht94hNk

I don't know why but when I see people running long distance they don't look like they're going that fast, but in reality they're going really fast. Even when I go fast during an all out 5k or mile, I see my shadow and the way I'm running doesn't look that fast, but it feels really fast and its extremely tiresome. The way she does a 5:35 mile and makes it look so easy is crazy honestly. My fastest mile is like a 6:33 and I felt practically dead the last 400m and afterwards too.

How intimidating must it be to have the national champion on your high school team? First of all, you know you are never going to win first at regionals, sectionals, or even district meets. But it's a great opportunity to learn from someone who has all of: the genetics, proper technique/training and proper work ethic. Plus, you know your coach is probably pretty good.
