The profit margin was probably the overall factor, they don't sell alot of tools, so what do you do? Regress to an older standard, sell the same amount of tools and make a little bit more money, that has to be the explaination. manufacturing a higher cost and better performing tool is not the number one goal apparently, $$$$ is the overall survival factor.

the collet on my gen5x did get stuck at first too just a bit of use has "fixed" it. i don't think i'll be replacing it any time soon (still fairly new picked it up last year) like you I like the 3 speed switch and the light ring at the head of the tool. Also don't know why they got rid of the light switch at the bottom it's so convenient to press it for light with out spinning up the tool.

Then again as you pointed out that tool doesn't have the extra prongs so maybe it can't take advantage of the extra power

Performance aside, I'm not a fan of the new styling, lack of rubber over-molding included. Sure it might be smaller and lighter than octane or gen5x, but it's looking more and more like "generic tool". For small and light they have sub-compact, I want my main tool to have some heft and bumpers because it's going to get banged around.
@Toolboss0826
@Toolboss0826 3 жыл бұрын
Couldn’t agree more. I believe that these new tools are a downgrade from octane. It’s sad to see them go down. I’m still super bitter on the drop of octane and the drop of quality from ridgid. We should have had octane gen 2 instead of dropping it completely
@kylefowler5082
@kylefowler5082 3 жыл бұрын
I believe that the reason they removed the rubber from the batteries was people were sending their batteries in for warranty when the rubber started coming off. I'm in the Ridgid Facebook group and seen stories of people using the warranty to get new batteries when the rubber started coming off. You know Ridgid won't tolerate that for long. Also they killed the Octane line because of bluetooth connectivity issues. Again people were using the warranty to get new batteries because the Bluetooth acts up. Ridgid just couldn't take away the Bluetooth feature from the Octane line so they killed the whole line to start fresh. Now Ridgid has the new Max Output brand with no rubber to warranty and no Bluetooth to warranty. Basically the downside to the lifetime warranty is that we end up with tools with less features to break.

I mean, I had to warranty a drill I got in 2015, when I made the appointment with the Authorized service center, I mentioned to the Ridgid employee that my batteries were starting to age, they were weaker, and didn't last nearly as long, the employee right away ordered replacements (I have 2), and said I could recycle the old ones wherever I wanted, got new ones in the mail a few days later, and still have the old ones.
@kylefowler5082
@kylefowler5082 Жыл бұрын
@@rmendez011 you got pretty lucky, the only authorized repair center in my area is a lawnmower repair shop and he wouldn't have approved those older batteries in your story. I know because I asked and he said that if he puts the battery on a charger and the charger doesn't say the battery is bad then he won't try to warranty it for me. Also he only replaces the part that's broken so if your old sawzall is pretty tired and the trigger breaks, that trigger is the only thing he repairs even if the motor is pretty weak. He's the only option around me and since he is available Ridgid makes me use him. At this point if a tool starts wearing out I just chuck it because he won't warranty it.

@@kylefowler5082 I don't think I explained myself well, when I first called Ridgid support to say I damaged my drill, after they had set up the appointment with the authorized repair shop (which was a U-Haul truck rental shop), Ridgid Support instructed me to not take any accessories, *no charger, no batteries, no bits, nothing*, only the drill, that's when I mentioned that my batteries were weak, they did not question me, and right away sent replacements, not once did I mention the batteries to the U-Haul store.

Blame it on TTI, and the fact they don’t want RIDGID to overshadow their vaulted Milwaukee line of drills and impacts. And before You go thinking I’m bashing on Big Red, I am heavily invested in both M18 and M12 tools. @headholio
@headholio Жыл бұрын
Hey buddy thanks for the video but I want to point out that you are misunderstanding how batteries work. The amp hour rating only tells you how long the battery will last not how much power it gives you. a 4 amp-hour battery will last 4 hours with a 1 amp load. 2 amp hour battery will last half the time. The "power" of all the batteries you tested is the same. The power is proportional to the voltage. They are all 18 volt batteries. Any small difference you noticed with the batteries was just measurement error or variability in the wood and fastener, or the placebo effect.

You do know that higher amp hour doesn’t mean more power. It just means it has a longer battery life. Right? So I fail to see the point in testing 2ah with 3ah and 6 ah…. It’s the same power. Different battery life’s….
@WorkshopAddict
@WorkshopAddict Жыл бұрын
True, and false. The batteries used din the different Ah battery packs have different amp outputs, so while your statement is true, the pack could have a higher amp output giving the tool more power. Read a bit on battery cells.
@kevonbahadoor3670
@kevonbahadoor3670 Жыл бұрын
The calculation is for ex on a 6ah battery it will run 6 amps an hour. Or 1 amp for 6 hours. So it really depends on how much power your tool is consuming from your battery which again would be standard across all batteries. Determining the battery life of the battery on the tool ? Amp hour and amps are different. You’re not popping a 6 amp battery into your tool

Tests have been done on other channels that showed little difference in runtime under load between Ridgid's Max Output and standard batteries. In some cases, under light loads, the standard battery performed somewhat better. What's odd is all the batteries tested contained various brand cells, with no consistency between lines or Ah sizes. I have both standard and Max b/c I got a great price on Max and some of the tools w/ extra pins might add an advantage. Might(?). Otherwise, depending on price, I'd stick with standard b/c it appears the use of the word MAX is just a marketing gimic.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s hating on the digital torque setting. You can change the mechanical switch without having to look at the drill. Can’t do that with the silly buttons. Also, thanks for all the attention you’ve given to the different batteries. All the other channels are repeating all the marketing jargon but not actually comparing them.

No need to be concerned. Just stick to what works! What's best for you! And What makes sense! 4 me that's sticking to my old trusty, reliable Ridgid, octane collection & take better care of them. Too invested to turn back now! If it anit broke, No need to fix it! Best be on lookout & take advantage of all the Octane sales & Clarence deals & get all you need! There going to be giving those tools & batteries away! They can keep this Bull S**t!

Like so many others, I am not impressed by this new line at all. To be fair, the impact driver was the only octane tool that I never liked. That push-button mode selector was crap, but at least it didn't ooze schmoo. I stuck with my stealth force drivers and brushless Gen5x. Will never understand why companies insist on "fixing" things until they're broke. If it works and people like it, leave it be! It's too bad we won't be able to get excited about new ridgid tool releases any more. Seems like they're going to dumb down the entire platform, eliminating the more specialized tools and cheapening the design/construction/value of the more basic tools they retain. I'm not getting rid of the Ridgid stuff I already have, but I don't expect to be adding any of this new garbage to the collection. I wonder if there is going to be much of a change / cheapification to their corded tools as well. I was a big fan of Ridgid tools. I sang their praises often to people who saw all the orange in my truck. I guess that is over. I'm going to make a point of telling everyone that this new stuff is junk, and not worth buying. Maybe if enough of it gathers dust on the shelf they'll start turning out quality tools again. Time will tell.

Great Video. As far as that impact , I don't think it will stand up to Professional use and with all the money saving "Hacks" out there on DeWalt , Milwaukee and Makita , someone would have to be a die hard Ridgid fan to even think about that platform....

Milwaukee, Ridgid, and RYOBI are all made by the same company. Ridgid filled the gap and created straight up 'power' tools with the Octane line. Completely unmatched in every way by Milwaukee, which has a longer lifespan by processing and functioning much slower, and Dewalt, which derives power from high amp batteries having better quality output than the tool it's put into. Hints the ridiculous overheating as soon as you start one. . . . .Let's be honest. So, Milwaukee makes everything under the sun and already has the "high quality" label. Now suddenly, RYOBI is beefing up their power tools as well as introducing a huge line of large equipment like mowers, pressure washers, chainsaws, augers, etc. So basically they're shitting on the Ridgid name because they're tired of spending so much with the LSA, because people do utilize it. They're tired of our shit and want us to buy their red and green shit. Fuck them up their stupid asses. I'm switching to Kobalt.
