My mother met Tal while she was working this tournament, when she was in her early 20's. She worked for Saint John tourism at the time, and was tasked with picking up some of the players at the airport, showing them around the city, and accommodating them during their stay. She didn't know anything about chess really (still doesn't), but she met all the greats (Karpov, Kasparov, Spasky, etc) and the one who made the biggest impression on her was Tal. She told me Tal was drinking hard the night before, raising boisterous toasts all night and she along with everyone else (including other players) was telling him to slow down. She remembers him coming in to play the next day, still a bit woozy and off balance as he entered the building, and then to her surprise he won it all anyway (although after having learned more about him when she got older, she now wonders if this was some kind of psychological tactic). Also, humorously, when Spasky drove by Saint John's Irving Oil Refinery in the harsh winter weather, he declared to my mom that this city reminded him of Siberia. I've been watching the amazing videos you posted in hopes of catching a glimpse of her :) Thanks for sharing!

Tal treats blitz correctly which commentators don’t understand. Tal knows that in blitz time and surprise moves are more important whereas the commentatos treat blitz as if it is a classical game where everything must be calculated in depth and that is why Tal is world champ and they will never be.

Its called blitz for a reason... A player of Tals caliber will excel because a shocking move generates a stun and flustered-ness, while time is a factor...the likelihood of mistakes is thereby multiplied...this man was a true master by proving that theres only so many sub-variations until you run out of letters. Fair question, what is a person running on then, instinct, skill? Depends on the person...prodigious talent, Tal!

Its a draw! Vaganian didnt resign! Of this game Walter Browne wrote (in Blitz Chess, Vol. 1 Issue 2) "Most people spectating at the World Chess Festival thought that Vaganian resigned, but Tal in Shakmati Riga informs us that a draw was proposed and accepted! The discrepancy is over Black's 62nd move. The Canadian version of the game score gives 62...Kf6 63. Nf5 a3 after which White should indeed resign. Tal's version of the game score gives 62...Kf7 which would indeed lead to a draw after 63. Nf5 a3 64. Nd6+ Ke7 65. Be6! Ke6 66. Nb5 a2 67. Nd4+ Kf6 68. Nc2 Kf5 69. Kf3 h4 70. Ne3+ Kf6 71 Nc2=.

Imagine ! Tal was 52, and already very sick ! He was a true genius ! But the fact that he won so convincingly and that Kasparov and Karpov did'nt even made it to the finals only shows how Fischer was strong !!! Tal was unable to beat him in blitz and Fischer was toying with everybody ! And Fischer was even almost never losing a single game ! The true champion was and will always be Fischer !!! When we look at Carlsen today, Carlsen is losing so many games and he plays so bad ! He is a very poor champion ! He would have been crushed by Fischer ! Fischer is the greatest player of all time, with Alekhine. But we will never know. A Fischer-Alekhine match would have been the greatest match in chess history !
