World Boss Portal Device Review - Is it worth it? - Guild Wars 2

A few additional points to this video that I've learned from the COMMENTS section that I did not know or think of when making it! 1) This item can take you to waypoints you do not have, so it can be used to help with world exploration on alts. 2) If your computer can't run gw2 and a browser at the same time, it is a great alternative! 3) This item does show the bosses in the "Tequatl" tier, such as triple trouble and karka queen. 4) Apparently it can take you to contested waypoints, because it doesn't actually use the waypoint to port you 5) It is a free teleport, so no waypoint fee, a very minor cost saver

Well, if someone has a PC that can't handle a web browser at the same time as the game, I doubt that PC is able to handle world bosses with tons of people and lag ;)

As a casual player with a very basic PC, I can say it is definitely worth it. Free teleports to wherever the current bosses will be spawning (even to contested waypoints as Milan Swiderski mentioned). And with a glorified toaster of a PC it saves me the agony of tabbing out and waiting on a page to load. I use both the Portal Device and /wiki et, but 90% of the time all i really need is the portal device, due to time constraints or pure laziness. It's great for those spur of the moment "what do i want to do now" occasions. As I mentioned, I'm super casual these days, so gold/gems are not exactly free flowing, and I can easily say that I have never regretted the purchase. That was over a year ago. Oh, and not sure if it has been mentioned but there is no teleport fee associated with using it ....so free teleports =D

@Miss Pandora lol, enjoy hunting. a tip though if you get the notif that the boss will spawn in x minutes best get there asap that way you can join a large group before the map gets full. more chances of you being able to defeat the boss.

While I understand your point, I personally really like to be able to relax and just see what’s coming up without having to wiki it. I know it sounds lazy, but having the free teleport is really nice as well and it allows me to do bosses with certain characters that don’t have a full map explored.

This is the reason why I got mine. Maybe if the wiki had a sound alarm or something. GW2 Timer is too heavy to keep open all the time. I'm pretty satisfied with my world boss portal device and my pact operations device. Can't wait for ANet to make one for PoF.

I have one too and it Not only does it Ignore Contested Waypoints it also always put you in a Maps/IPs with a group of players doing the boss so you dont have to us LFG then try to get into an active map. As long as The Red X is up you are always going to get into an active map with many players. The Magumma Version of this also does the same thing so i never miss an event I want to do.

This is actually the most useful item i ever bought. If i want to do some world bosses or tp to some zone with new character or just see what is up and dont want to open wiki. Just super useful and mega useful for people without second monitor. Edit: minor things

I have one of these portal devices (HoT, I think). I find that by the time it warns me of an event, it's too late to join a populated server

There's a HoT portal device, called something like Maguuma portal device. Unfortunately each HoT event tends to blend seamlessly into the next with a 10-15m tolerance, so by the time one event ends, everyone goes to the new map and afk's until it starts, so it's not as valuable

You didnt mention that the portal device will also port you to contested waypoints. The wiki shows where you can port to but if the point is contested you can't go there. Portal device doesn't care about that and just puts you there. Wich personally sinds im always late to bosses is a life saver 😅

You could say that this item is a relic of the past. When it was first released the event timer wiki page had only the world boss rotation section.

I got this thing across accounts when the World Boss hunt thing was active, an event that's probably going to return...just made things easier and continues to as it's a quality of life item even though I rarely do world bosses anymore. I won't get the meta version though as I usually don't mind hopping around finding them or doing events leading into one.

Thins thing can port you to WB WP even if you doesn't open particular WP yet, so you can WB train your sub characters, w\o world exploration :)

I use the portal device and I would argue it IS worth it if, like me, you cannot run a browser and the game client at the same time. It lets me know when a world boss is about to come up without having to keep looking at the event timer on my phone (which is where I look at the wiki). It's also an in-game reminder if I'm in the middle of something that "Oh yeah, I should finish up because I need that for x reason."

The wiki is even easier than you showed in your video. Each boss has a chat code under it that you can copy, paste into say chat in-game, and then click on in your chat window to bring that WP up on the game map. Other thing you can do with one site (I think gw2efficiency but it might be a different one) is get voice notifications about world bosses, so you can get that for free too. The other thing about the alternatives is that they don't clutter up your inventory.

I actually never heard of the /wiki et command specifically. I have used /wiki before but regarding world bosses I just do /wiki world boss and follow that timer. I might use the /wiki et command now cause it's faster to type that as opposed to world boss. Also quick question about the World Boss portal device: If you have a character that doesn't have a map that a world boss spawns in and you want to use that character specifically(Say your character doesn't have Frostgorge Sound and you want to use that character to fight the Claw), would you still go to that specific waypoint or will it teleport you to the closest one to the boss that character has?

I actually learned this from reading this comment section: it appears you can use the device to access areas you didn't have mapped out yet on any character. I didn't know that one!

I like it myself, but I would say it is just a super convenience like Muk said. However, if you've been playing a long time. It's a no brainer. I just converted gold to gems for it awhile back, and I love mine.

I can not stress enough that sometimes the reservation device notifications are just too short. You get a message 10 minutes before the boss spawns. With tequatl for instance finding an not full but successful map on a evening or weekend is really hard. You usually need to look into the big bosses 20 minutes before to get a good map

Couple things I would have liked to see addressed in the video: 1. Do you need the waypoint unlocked? If not, this can be neat if you want to do world bosses on alts that don't have the whole map explored. 2. Does it also show "hard" world bosses (Tequatl, Triple Trouble, Karka Queen)? Or anything else that could be considered a world boss that isn't in the first line of /wiki et? 3. Does it only show a line in chat, or banner across the screen? Either way, it's a much better "reminder" system than setting up an alarm or watching the timers on a 2nd monitor. 4. For low specs players, this is the best method to get timers with the least impact on performance. Totally agree that "it tells you what's coming up and lets you port there without looking up what waypoint" sounds pretty lackluster, more research into what it does besides the obvious would've been nice :P

It definitely simplifies everything to a ridiculous degree. If you like to play after a long day at work and don't want to work to jump into some of the most fun content... It's definitely worth it. Edit: And for only 400 gems it's triple worth it.

Hmmm so it's a very minor convenience (considering that the wiki even gives you the waypoint teleport codes), but it DOES save you the TP cost. If only it didn't take a (probably shared) inventory slot! I suppose it's useful for alts as well, because nobody's paying THAT much money or time to unlock the whole world map on every alt.

I use the gw2toolkit app on my phone where you, among other things, can see the event timer and even set alarm for your favourite worldboss or event.

If you have infinite salvage tools you can keep those up there, allowing you to reach them easily from any character you are on. Aside from that I have mistlock sanctuary passkey, infinite omnipotion for fractals, and infinite salvage kits in account slots currently. I dream of someday having a use-anywhere bank up there.

I'll second the infinite tools and add that it helps to keep some regular tools on each character too, even if they're trash tier (though ori tier would be best in case of accidents). But it's way easier to double-click the tool in the shared inventory slot to exchange it with the one equipped, rather than open up the hero menu and drag it to your inventory slot.

I used gw2timer and didn't even know this item exists lol. The problem is for some boss 10 mins before boss appear can be too late and it may port you to the map that there're not enough people. I like gw2timer because it has the voice alert at 15 mins and I found it so helpful especially with the boss that I know where Is should port and can find it on the map easily. ps.for the contested waypoints, I don't find it to be the problem at all, there will always be the one that's close to the bass anyway

Thank you for doing it so I don't have to! Was debating it with the sale... I use the gw2timer website for almost everything. Get to keep track of my own checklist, access to my whole accounts inventory, and I like the clock that show what's coming up. You can click the icon then paste ingame it'll say x boss, [y] teleport link, in z:zz time. wait - does it bypass contested waypoint and put you there anyways?

I also think it is helpful that if you don't have a second monitor in not having to alt tab out to look at the ET, which is a convivence. Is it only main Tyria bosses, or does it track Expansions and LWS bosses as well?

This one is core game only. There is a maguuma portal device as well for HoT bosses I know. Not sure about PoF off the top of my head.

Using gw2 taco has a build in timer, you stull have to find the wp.

Question, because i do not have it (and I didn't hear it mentioned)..... if the nearest waypoint to the boss is contested, will it still port me there? If i haven't unlocked the waypoint (aka, a newer player), will it still port me to the same specific point?

I can't think of any waypoints next to world bosses that become contested off the top of my head, but I assume it would go to the next closest uncontested one.

For the first time, I disagree with you. This item is 100% worth it for newer players. I had no idea this thing existed, and I just stumbled across it on the gem store. I bought it, and it's AWESOME! It just lets you teleport to any boss event that's on, even in places you've never been to, so you're getting the waypoints for free as well. I don't watch websites to see when bosses spawn, and then look up stuff on a map to figure out how to get there.... I just click, and go. Boom! I'm there, ready for action. If you're new(ish) to GW2 - BUY THIS THING :P
