Being the "Best Dressed" man in room has become my goal for over a year now (I'm 73) and I have begun to see changes in the clothing attitudes of the people I spend much of my time with. One observation I've made that might be of interest to your KZbin followers would be... "When you make the commitment to be more sartorial be consistent." If you "Show Up" ALWAYS dressed with your own particular style the people you associate with become accustomed to the "Look" and within a short period of time expect it. Case in point...I "Consistently" wear a high quality wide brimmed hat. I stay with Akubra (Made in Australia) and Stetson (Made in the US). It is my "expected" look and when I show up on rare occasions without a dress hat the comment has been made more that once, "I didn't recognize you without your hat". When I hear that my "personal style" is established and accepted. Be "Consistent"... Thanks for your educational effort ... look forward to your next video. David Stone

I used to be in corporate communications and we used to provide media training to senior corporate leaders and spokespersons. There is a big rule that when you're out there on TV, in public appearance or giving a public speech, you should always dress subdued, boring, and appear in-offensive to anyone. You want your target audience to focus on your speech, not being distracted by how ugly or pretty your tie is for example. Certain fabric with shiny appearance or tiny pattern will make you look outright ridiculous in front of a camera or under artificial studio lights. There are reasons why they are dressed that way.

Nice clue. But either ugly or fancy we will notice, which neither is desired (as you say). In the end, better to be just right, as much as possible, and in the end will tend be attractive especially on a fit body.

Unfortunatelly you see Scholz often without a tie, e.g. there was a bilateral govt.meeting, all german and french ministers, Macron wearing a 3-piece suit and, of course, Scholz… the one and only person without a tie. Inappropriate, especially as the host of the meeting. ImO disrespectful to his guests and to the society he represents.. You see him often in the parliament without a tie as well. As a citizen I want to see my representative suited worthy to the situation he‘s in. Am I wrong? You nail it to 💯% 👍🏼

Hi Ash. It always amazes me to see ill fitting clothes on people where money is no object. I am a pensioner on limited income and dress better than any of them. The tie situation is a sticky one. Again, it shouldn't be that difficult to choose a tie with a subtle pattern in a feint stripe or a slightly more textured material. Thanks for the effort in putting this together in an obviously non-partisan way. BTW. It's quite all right to have an opinion, even a strong one, on these people, just so long as it doesn't enter into the commentary or grading awards.

Hey can you make a video about english countryside style? I like tattersall check shirts, Bellstaff and Barbour. Can you explain the history of this type of style ?
@vrdrew63
@vrdrew63 14 күн бұрын
Tattersalls were, and continue to be to this day, the leading auctioneers of thoroughbred race horses in the United Kingdom. Dating back to the late 18th century, horses sold were supplied with blankets with that distinctive square checked pattern. Over time people involved with the horse-racing industry (book-makers, breeders, punters, etc.) adopted the pattern in their shirts and other garments. Tattersall was the original "horsey" look - long before Ralph Lauren's Polo appeared on the scene. For what its worth, the UK is still one of the leading centres of thoroughbred equine science and commerce. There is a healthy, and lucrative, trade between Kentucky, Saudi Arabia, Ireland, and England in expensive horses. Hence the enduring appeal of the Tattersall check.

@vrdrew63
@vrdrew63 15 күн бұрын
You're a brave man, Ash, wading boldly into the figurative (if not literal) minefield of passing judgement on political personages! Have to agree with pretty much all of your assessments. Some thoughts: Emmanuel Macron: As President of France, Macron is the Grand Master of the Legion of Honour. I think that his lapel badge is the Boutonnière of a Grand Officier Légion d'Honneur. Entirely appropriate under the circumstances. Ties: Sorely lacking in all of the ties were good "dimples". If you're going to wear a tie, learn how to do a knot that shows that you know how to wear it with style and grace. And surely some variety in colour and weave would have been appropriate? A couple of them were an inch or so too long. If you're going to wear a tie - do it right! Trouser length: There is no excuse for a gentleman of any distinction to wear badly fitted trouser legs. It's the cheapest and easiest bit of tailoring imaginable. You can get trousers blind-hemmed for £20-50 in about an hour. Regardless if your suit costs $200 or $10,000 - get this work done. Braces/Suspenders work wonders in maintaining length and break if, as happens to many of us gentlemen of a certain age, one's waistline is no longer a reliable arbiter in such matters. Really appreciate your detailed analysis and review. Lessons for us all here!

“Who decided on the dress code”…this video was hilarious. First of all, the German guy got robbed. There is no way an American politician is coming in tied with anybody. Everyone knows we have the worst dressed politicians. We haven’t had a stylish leader since JFK, though Reagan had his moments. Now the Brit playing backup deserved the score you gave, but Sunak is always stylish so you guys still get to medal. Among that motley crew Macron definitely takes the gold. In our alliance, if I’m looking for style tips I’m calling Italy first and Britain next (Park Avenue you can take the day off). Seriously though, i’m just glad they all showed up. I’m a first gen Yank whose parents lived those events on their front yards. I grew hearing the most unbelievable stories, and this is not something you want to forget or ever see again.

Ash: Another thing all four missed--their trousers should be cuffed. (I believe in the UK cuffs are called "turnups.") Cuffed trousers make a man look more distinguished and more serious. Your King sets an excellent example of this. And I think what would have been a nice touch, given the sombreness of the occasion (commemorating a place where many men died), would have been a grey suite, coupled with a neatly folded black pocket square and black necktie.

Great video Ash, first class observations and I was grinning from ear to ear at your diplomacy skills. Good find with the billboard. Whilst I understand the tightrope that politicians tread to avoid drawing criticism about their outfits I feel that if the outfit outshines their message, they really need to work on the message. To draw a parallel, if one is to successfully wear a hat, one must be more interesting than the hat. I find that female politicians' outfits have far more interesting details and scope for expression. If I may be so bold, both you, I and many chaps that we know are far more well presented than world leaders nowadays yet still avoid being sartorial peacocks that could be viewed unfavourably. Kind regards, Rob.

Greetings Ash, nice video. An observation on shoes. I agree with most of your listed points. One comment however is they were on a beach. This is hard of course on any mirror shine. Mr. Biden has indeed had some issues with balance with uneven ground recently. He has been fitted with shoes I believe based on a brand known as the Hoka Transport model. Perhaps a custom pair? I know if I were on the scene I very likely would want my orthopedic walking stick for the uneven ground. I certainly would not want to storm the beach now days. Kudos to the men who did back in the day. You videos are always enjoyable.

How can a public figure like David Cameron be wearing a pair of trousers that don't fit him properly? The man must be rolling in money yet buys suits of the rack and far worse can't even pay about ten pounds to get them tailored! I thought Biden did well, just needed the pants shortened a bit, and his shoes are orthopedic and unfortunate looking but he needs stability at this point. Tailor those pants and a nice cap toe Oxford and he’d have beat Macron, who had the best shoes by far, but hose pants are way too skinny and “fashion-ey.”

Great topic. In General, for these types of events, all of the leaders are told beforehand, the dress code, and what they are expected to wear. I agree, Lord Cameron is the worst (Suit does not fit, Trousers too long, Sleeves too long). But the most Powerful Man in the Room, President Biden is dressed the best. I would have liked a slightly darker shade of blue. True, the trousers could be slightly shorter, and the shirt sleeves slightly shorter, but you did not mention that the jacket Shoulders fit perfectly. And the jacket waist hugs his frame without being tight. He wears an elegant crisp pocket square. Please take into account that he is from a middle-class family and the government does not pay for his clothing. Even as President, he cannot afford bespoke suits. Give him some slack, please. I will try to find the New York Times article I read a few months back about the trend in wearing dressy sneakers with suits. It featured a photo of a number of US Congressmen having a meeting with President Biden, and all of them were wearing Cole Haan dress sneakers with stretchy mid blue suits. The president was the only gentleman wearing a pair of traditional dress shoes with his suit. As you can imagine the Times fashion editor was aghast. It is interesting then that the President has himself now adopted the use of dress sneakers. As you have mentioned, there may be practical considerations, and I am not looking to upset anyone with the observation.

Some good observations there Ash, and liked the idea for the video - timely and insightful. Re: Your point about these gents 'not standing out' - I think in this intance, that's the preferred aim. Being consistent and uniform amongst the dignitaries and leaders, with a focus on the military, veterans and the historic occasion. Its for the politicians to be present with some humility and quiet respect in deference to the greater import of the occasion. Regarding the shine on the shoes, a mirror shine on a civilian shoe I'd suggest would'nt be expected and possibly be seen as 'trying too hard'. I respect as an ex-military man you would like to see that, but as a non- military (but v. respectful of the military - my Dad served) man I'd feel uncomfortable displaying this aspect - mine would be well polished with a subtle shine.

Hi there, Trousers that have been tailored do fit correctly to start with, but if they slip from their intended position on your waist, they then buckle at the ankle and look too long. If you wear them tight enough on your waist not to slip, they cut into your stomach when you’re sitting down. What is your opinion of bracers? Years ago trousers hung like curtains from the shoulder. Bruce Forsyth was a very snappy dresser and he always wore bracers. How can you Ash get a perfectly fitting suit if you can’t afford to go to Savile Row?

It does depend on pant to pant, but the vast majority of my 32" inseam leaves a bit too much length. It is the inseam I noticed first in this video and found it most striking. Interesting theme. I wonder how much the cultural backgrounds of the 4 influence the differences between them even though they are essentially dressed the same. The French have a reputation for being well dressed, although I don't know how well-earned this is in reality. I don't really know much about how people dress in the circles that Biden comes from. However, it does strike me that Cameron's appearance very much reflects the arrogant attitude of the British so-called upper classes who often seem to believe that what they perceive as their social superiority means that having to make any effort is beneath them. By the standards of German business dress, Scholz is actually quite formally attired. Fairly normal business dress in Germany is an open-necked shirt, a blazer, sports jacket, jeans and a pair of trainers. The fact that Scholz is in a suite and, in particular, his shoes (even though they are not leather-soled) is quite elevated by these standards.

As an American I’m glad Joe didn’t embarrass my country. He knows how to fold a pocket square. You-know-who would have worn a suit in day-glow blue cut like a spinnaker, with a fire-engine tie hanging over his belly, and no pocket square.

I’m not sure why it wasn’t possible to have a photo that included Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He was there and is generally quite stylish. Remember that one of the 5 landing beaches was Canadian (Juno) and Canadians made up a substantial number of the total troops on the D-Day invasion.

I very much like the colour of David Cameron's suit, even if it looks a touch out of place in this group photo. Presumably since he was a last minute stand in he wasn't asked to wear a dark navy suit. I dislike absolutely everything else about how he's dressed. He's also wearing a belt with his suit which I despise - all in all his style seems very American - the point collar rather than a spread collar, and the belt with the suit - both things which I've come to associate with American style vs the more European spread collar and side adjusters. I'm not sure I agree with Giving Biden and Schultz the same score, I think Biden deserves at least half a point more for wearing the pocket square, even if he has other issues with his fit, the pocket square alone noticeably elevates him compared to most of the others. Edit: you originally gave Schultz a 6.5 then at the end of the video you seemed to change your mind and give him a 6, so I suspect you subconsciously reached the same conclusion I did after reviewing Biden.

I wouldn't judge the boringness of the outfits - that's how it should be, plus it seems there was a super-blue dress code. But the fit, NO EXCUSE. Makes them look sloopy. They can easily afford (or even charge the tax payers - at least we could see some use for the taxmoney...).

another flaw about Macron: lapels of his jacket are too narrow

Hello Ash, I thought you were bit too generous towards President Macron - surely his trousers were a little too long, and his coat sleeves only looked about right because his arms were bent - had they been straight, I think the sleeves would have been too long. Thanks for your programmes - I really do realise that I look like a tramp and at 76 I should know better. I now feel inspired to improve my attire bit by bit as funds allow. Is there a bio-degradable alternative to leather? I am trying to follow a vegan diet to keep my cholesterol level down and that has sort of snowballed into not wearing animal skins. Where I live (Hinckley, Leics) anyone who looks really smart would be taken for a Jehova's Witness! No offence intended to them. Peter Smith

I once saw a painting of (I think) the first US congress. It came with the explanation that the diversity guy was the lone catholic in a room full of protestants.That painting came to mind when watching this video with Cameron being the diversity dresser in a differrent shade of blue. Good video. While it no longer surprises me it still puzzles me that most men don't use pocket squares. It does so much to elevate a man's clothing. And while I understand that national leaders tend to dress somewhat conservatively a white pocket square in a presidential fold bridges both worlds, conservative while adding a visual interest. This also reminds me of when I went to one of the big Icelandic banks while working as a TV reporter prior to the crash of 2008. I right away spotted the guy who would never get a promotion. He was wearing a different colour suit to everyone else.

absolutely, he always looks awful, politics aside he's more than wealthy enough to do better. Interestingly though, Barron is clearly getting advice from his mother or someone else, because any time you see him in a suit he always looks immaculate; the contrast with his father's dress sense is staggering.

No additional comments for France or Germany, except to say that I disagree about the derby shoes. They are perfectly fine for an occasion such as this. Oxfords are more formal than derbys, this is true, but plain toe derby are appropriate for this formality. This isn't black tie. (Even then, you can get patent leather formal shoes in derby). Biden has changed shoes recently to increase his balance. He has a spine injury, which causes an awkward stance and gate when walking. though he regularly rides a bicycle. The new shoes are designed for balance, and they have a much thicker sole. This is likely why his break is so pronounced. It is likely they did not tailor those trousers for those shoes, as he typically wears more traditional shoes (oxfords, derbys, and loafers - all black), for meetings with world leaders - but he isn't usually walking so much.
@jonathont7866
@jonathont7866 15 күн бұрын
I have to firmly disagree on the Derby shoes - any time you wear Derby's with a suit you're dressing the suit down. I would personally never do it, although I think it's tolerable with a casual suit, although there are more elegant options. Definitely not with a Navy suit on an occasion like this. I also want to point out that even captoe oxfords are definitely not acceptable for black tie - you need to wear wholecut, ideally mirror shined oxfords at a minimum, or patent leather wholecuts, or opera pumps.

@jonathont7866 14 күн бұрын
@@adrianwalker2833 not necessarily true, if you have your shoes made bespoke (which every person in this photo can afford and quite frankly should) then I don't think there's any reason why you can't buy oxfords that fit. even made to measure, you've got companies like carmina which will make reasonably priced shoes in whatever size you want on a variety of different lasts. I would generally wear oxfords with a suit but even if I wasn't I'd wear monkstraps or horsebit loafers before I wore derbies. Derbies are for chinos and jeans.

I'll drop a comment for each. Lord Cameron is first. I think you are mistaken regarding his trouser length. As you noticed, he's got a little round in the belly, and when that happens, it isn't unusual for the trousers to creep down off the waist and slide below the belly. You can see that his belt is too low, so I think this is what happened. He walked around with the others, and they were pulled together for a photograph, and Lord Cameron didn't tug his pants up first. Oh, and it is your personal view on loafers that is affecting your opinion. It might be a surprise, but loafers are fairly common with politicians, in suits or not.
@jonathont7866
@jonathont7866 15 күн бұрын
as a very portly fellow myself, the correct thing to do is to wear high rise trousers, having your pants under your belly is never a good look, and neither is wearing a belt with a suit, these world leaders are all wealthy enough and in the sort of job where they should have tailored suits. I agree with you that loafers are perfectly fine with a suit but not penny loafers, those are the most casual of the three main styles. Horsebit loafers would have been better.

It's actually stunning to see how poorly these men are dressed, not only considering the fact that they are regularly in the public eye, but also considering that they are all part of a wealthy elite who could easily afford to dress much better than they are attired here. For the most part, their clothes don't even fit well. White shirts, blue ties, no pocket squares, except for the white three-peaked pocket square on the American president -a complete lack of imagination when it comes to colour and detail. I get the impression that this is just the upscale uniform of the neoliberal globalists, and that it's really just the other side of the coin of the uniform one sees on the street every day sported by the proletariat: sneakers, jeans, t-shirts, and baseball caps.
