Note; While the AVRE's spigot mortar is 290mm in calibre, it's "Only," an 18kg demo charge that it's firing. For reference, for the 152 mm howitzer M1938 of KV-2 fame, the HE shells would weigh 40-44 kilos with 5.6 to 6.8 of it being the HE. Less boom, yes, but I'm not entirely sure WG might not decide that the steel casing has an effect on an HE shell's performance. Then again, there was also a version of the Churchill with the HESH-rich 165mm L9 gun in the early Cold War, right?

Why the TOG 2? Because it was the first vehicle to carry a 17pdr gun (it was used to test out the turret as it was the only vehicle large enough to carry it, as it had already been used to test out a couple of configurations and was otherwise free for use) and therefore does fill an important place in the British tech tree, being the first British tank with a gun capable of dealing with any existing contemporary enemy at long range.
@doubledouble4g3796 жыл бұрын
Makes sense. The TOG*2 has a lot of flat surfaces and is fairly simple-looking, so from a game design perspective it must have been quite easy to make the model and throw it into the game. Plus it added variety as opposed to adding a 5th(?) Churchill to the game. (GC, 1,3,7... am I forgetting one?) Of course this is Wargaming we're talking about - we could just chalk it up to the vodka ;P

That's... an incredibly unusual end. It used to be that if all tanks were destroyed in that extra time after cap it would switch to a Victory: All Tanks Destroyed for the other team. I was able to capitalize on that twice. I wonder if they changed it because of the Personal Missions. It also made the missions to win by cap much harder because you could cap out and if your teammates killed the last enemy in that extra time it didn't count as a cap win anymore.
@Th3HuntingShadow6 жыл бұрын
At some point, don't remember exactly when, but it was some time ago, they made this sort of timing much stricter. For the most part once the capture rate reaches 100 it's capped, regardless of wether you get hit right after(before you could hit ppl shortly after they capped and reset it again) or die. They might indeed have changed it when they rebalanced the first set of personal missions, I can't remember.
@PreceptorGrant6 жыл бұрын
I haven't played in a few years, but played heavily back in the day. My understanding is that the precise moment a cap victory is achieved is not when it reaches 100%, but a long moment later when an exclamation mark ! appears beside the 100%. The cap can be at 100, but if the capping tank is then hit BEFORE the ! appears it prevents the win and reset the cap. Hits AFTER the ! appears do not count. I don't know it it has changed, but I'm certain that was the original mechanic, we relied on it sometimes in clan wars. : I just rewatched the tail end of the video, the mechanic is still exactly the same, except now a long moment after reaching 100 cap points the banner changes to show 'Enemy Base Captured!' instead of just popping a ! next to the cap points like in the old days. The incoming arty landed maybe a tenth of a second after the win banner popped.
@retro616 жыл бұрын
We were drilled in our clan to CEASE FIRE the moment you capped out, as any game damage post cap extended the "extra time" window when the opposition could swing a win. iirc it used to be a 5-7 second period when you could ninja the win by destroying all enemies

I dropped one blind on the cap, then put my cross hair right in the middle of the crater it left. 40 seconds later, I got a direct hit and the reset. If your choice is between shooting an entire cap or a spot where people think they’re safe, you shoot that spot.

What the 'The Old Gang II' is to Jingles, The A43 Black Prince is to me. A late war effort intended to counter the Tiger 1 by up-gunning (to the amazing, fire-breathing OQF 17 pdr.) and up-armouring (to good old flat 6"/152mm flat steel plate) the Churchill concept. However, before the BP could be completed the Churchill had been improved to the same standard of armour and now fitted a powerful enough (though still lacking compared to medium tanks such as the Panther and similarly, though successfully developed, Centurion 1 and utterly pales in comparison to the other nation's cutting edge heavy tanks such as the Tiger 2 or the IS) gun and the BP was dropped. It was heavier, wider and just as slow for the concept of the infantry tank had now been recognised as 'obsolete' (not wrong, the British are never wrong). However, I always like to think: what if? What if the BP had been pushed out around the same time as or just after the Tiger 1, say in late '42? The BP has 152mm flat frontal hull, turret front and side armour and a 152mm mantlet. The angled portions are thinner, the midplate 57mm @ 70* so lets ignore that (who knows what would happen as nobody has ever shot a Tiger 88mm at such a plate to my knowledge, BUT i'd guess it would bounce) and the lower plate 139mm @ -20* which follows the curve of a ballistic arc so would only be vulnerable to very flat shell trajectories. Now using the standardised NATO comparison of 50% penetration success against flat plate, the 88mm L/56 gun has 162mm (using APCBC) penetration at 100m distance. The 17 pdr has 174mm at 100m (using APCBC). So far neither tank has the advantage. However, as the Tiger only has ~100mm of flat frontal armour if one increases the range out to 500m the penetration drops to 151mm for the Tiger but the BP still has 163mm. From 500m the BP should be able to kill a tiger easily while the Tiger would struggle. More the that at 700m and definitely 1000m the BP is all but immune. The only shots that might work would be turret ring hits rendering the tank inoperable or a high ballistic arc shot onto that 57mm plate which might not render the gun inoperable. In short, the Black Prince is the Allied Tiger 1.1 that never was. Of course, all this discussion is purely hypothetical and the BP never saw combat let alone faced a Tiger 1. And, no matter how romantically I try to put it, the BP would have been too late. Vastly inferior in all aspects except (probably, with the Churchill inspired pedigree) mechanical reliability an cross country performance to a Tiger 2 which has just as thick armour... that is magically angled. And the heavy tank had reached the end of its usefulness with mobility and efficiency becoming much more important than outright armour values. Still, long live Prince Edward, the Black Prince!

It used to be that if you died after capping out, but before 5 seconds passed that you'd get the defeat, and that someone dying resulted in an extension of the post cap out grace period of 5 seconds after the last person died. There was one ridiculous replay where these time extensions resulted in a reversal of the victory some 20 seconds after the cap out.

I think whoever put the TOG in is also responsible for the Atlanta being one of the first American premiums in WoWs. I'm an infrequent WoT player, and when the TOG II was made available for a weekend special event a while back, I tried it out. I was so happy! It finally gave me a chance to have a tank that I could practice aiming and shooting with, and not worrying about dying 1...2...3... dead before I could get a second shot off. The TOG II has a great place as a newbie tank, wish it were a lot lower tier. Even went out and bought it when it was on sale recently, as a thanks to Wargaming for having it in the game.

Reminds me of an old Jingle video where this exact same thing happened, the solution the player had was to park in the shell crater of one of the arty's missed shots. Since I think it was an encounter battle he camped out through a five or 6 shot bombardment inside the shell crater of the first shot, arty never found him.

I'm sure somewhere in WarGaming's archives of WWII tanks, there's the section that was once titled "Prototypes and Concepts". It now reads "Packing Peanuts" and the first few entries in that archive under the British Royal Army are of the TOG II. Just like how in the later end of the Wehrmacht you'll find the Krupp Landkreuzer P. 1000 Ratte and the Krupp Landkreuzer P.1500 Monster. Every so often, after a drunken party, the seasonal intern stumbles in and grabs an entry or two and bring them back to the rest of the teams. Then the contemplation begins which tanks will be the premium packing peanuts. The others get discarded or ham-fisted somewhere into their nation's tech tree.

I honestly don't believe there are too many OP tanks in WoT. No, I mean it. The problem as I see it is that WG nerfs every tech tree tank that's even close to being good/fun (ELC, O-I Exp, ISU-152, arty etc.). But they keep introducing premium tanks that are just as good or even better than these tech tree tanks ever were. And that's an issue. In my opinion a premium tank gets an advantage because of the xp/credits boosts it gets and the pref MM some of them gets. The tank stats should never be better than tech tree tank of a similar tier. At best, they should be about equal. I'm not sure how all the new tanks on PC compare to the ones we have on console, but I think this problem is true for both platforms. As a side note, we have lots of KV-220-2s on console and they're far from being OP. I don't think we even have any truly OP tanks, because they all have a weakness. You just have to find it, and I think most people are too lazy to do that, instead preferring to yell in the forums like a tier 3 tanker who has just seen their first KV-1...

"You might be onto something Yuri, but what about armor? Comrad Stalin will most unhappy if we make a capitalist tenk better than his." "Nyet" "What do you mean nyet Yuri?" "Tenk will have no armor, many HP though" "Thats brilliant Yuri! Lets go to bar now, we still have money in budget for vodka"

When you are capping and arty is shooting you down and you are not spotted, first sit in less obvious spot, then when arty shoots into the cap you move to the exact same location where the shell landed, because nobody fires twice at the same spot. WeSmart

There's a Tank encyclopedia in Russian by gen. Mayskiy which includes TOG II* and is known by heart by any tank buff in Russia. So TOG is widely known in Russia, much more than a Crocodile actually

at the end there it could've been a good idea to go park his tank into one of the places that arty already shot at, because that arty player is very unlikely to shoot at the same place twice (and probably doesn't have the time to do it. either).

Afaik there was the rule that, if all tanks in the cap are destroyed, until 5 sec after a successful capture, the enemy team wins. They must have dropped it.

My guess would be: Either it was a planned aprils fool joke that somehow made it in. Or they couldn't deside what tank to pick, and someone of the higher ups was frustrated and just shouted "If you can't figure out which one in 5 minutes, we go with the TOG2"... and we know how this story ended.

I am surprised I dont see more players chasing the splashes in a situation like that. Drive to the last impact and keep the art from hitting you.

closest thing to this that I've seen is a match where there were only 2 arties left alive, and they both killed eachother with ranging shots, the one who had the first shot off won of course, but both teams were completely empty at the end of the match lol. I was one of the last 3 alive in the game and stayed around to see how it panned out, glad I did, sad though that I never saved the replay (I never save replays even when I should).

He could have chased the splashes. Go into a spot where the artillery just shot at since they probably won’t fire at the same location twice

The question of "too many overpowered tanks" is self defeating - after all - it there are so many - it must surely be balanced.
