That was an excuse to get around the London/Washington naval treaties as well. The class was designed for commerce raiding. It had diesel engines for long range, at the cost of speed (26kts). But it was designed to be able to defeat cruisers, the armor was to defeat 8" shells and it's 11.1" guns could take out any cruiser. The RN pulled all their ships, those that were useful, out of the Pacific to counter the Germans. Which may have been a good thing as they would not have faired well against the Kido Butai. The Dunkerque class was partly designed to counter them.

@@frosty3693 Germany was not, until the 1935 Anglo/German naval agreement, under the restrictions of the naval treaties only the Versailles treaty. Germany applied to become a part of the naval treaty system. Offering to accept the lowest level of tonnage as a way to obtain U- Boats and modern Battleships but were denied.

What I love about the graf spee is how people disrespect it because of the crappy dispersion, so they turn broadside and get exploded. And she's mostly immune to 14 inch guns so you can yolo BBs

I am very lucky to have this ship, along with the Grand old Lady Warspite, Graf Speed was one of my first premium ships that I got and it was for free if I remember correctly... And this ship is so fun to play... Too bad that it's not available anymore in the shop...

yes it was free, games were like 10 on 10 filled with only Graf Spees just like when the Scharnhorst came out, and Tirpitz too, while Tirpitz not being a freemium, still made up entire matches of premiums, fun times.

I got the ship during the Odin dockyard event. I actually entered the event just to get the Graf Spee, I stuck around and got the Odin too, but I rarely play German ships. For some reason the Toulon is more fun.

I bid about 10500 doubloons last year trying to get the Graf Spee but was outbid. Fortunately those doubloons went into the Wisconsin dockyard which was worth. Still really want this ship because of how historical it was.

I think that's how WG gets a lot of $ from those of us interested in history. Put out a legendary historical ship, and we'll line up with our wallets open. Honestly, if it weren't for that, I probably wouldn't have a number of ships in my port that I don't play, because in game they really aren't all that good. But yeah, I am going to bite for Johnston when it comes out.

Don't rely on the guns as you may be disappointed. The 8 KM torps on the other hand balance out the ship.

I had been playing the game a few matches a time every few weeks or months at the low tiers when I got this ship for some reason I didn't understand, and still don't remember why, and it's the reason I kept playing the game because I had so much fun on this ship. Now I play almost every day :O

I've got both versions of the Graf Spee and it's my favorite and most played ship. Tier 5-7 is the best range, and among that lineup Graf Spee shines the brightest.

I think this was my first premium. I still see her in many tier 6 matches. I don't run her often but funny enough I put a secondary build captain on her and go hard in brawls/ranked from time to time. You either do amazing smashing ships, or get ruined by a BB. Still a fun ship though. Oh and prepare to rage if you run into light cruisers and just over pen.

If GS had option of spotter plane you could be more effective in those T8 games by playing mid to long range at first with HE starting fires, then move in as the game progresses. But those guys at the dock (before you set sail) telling you, "nope its only fighter planes for you and they can not spot for you, after all its against the rules". I have recommended to WG many times give the player the option before game starts if they want fighter or spotter (on those ships they currently mandate one or the other). GS was designed of course as a commerce convoy raider so it originally tried to avoid confrontation with other naval ships, until the Royal Navy chased her down. Excellent video Sea Lord. I have the original from 2016 and they even gave me the dockyard version later so i can be in parades. 😄

I have it and love it, mostly because of her history. It is a real shame that she is not for sale, but I guess if it was for sale, any ranked and brawl season at tier 6-7 would be a Grad Spee spam.

Got it for free in the shipyard event. One of the best free giveaways that I have seen. She is very good-especially vs other same tier cruisers. Even tier 7 CAs have a hard time. You have to close because the guns can't hit crap. She has troubles with DDs though and her torps are great until they are knocked out which happens all the time. I had a good record with her but just hated tier 8 matches.

The gripe I have with the Graf Spee is that I have never gotten a good hit on another ship with only one turret. Any decent salvo, requieres you to shoot both turrets at a target, al least in my experience. It has the biggest guns of any cruiser in tiers VI and VII, it should be my go to cruiser at those tiers, but it just doesn´t cut it. Sad really, the Germans are my favorite line of ships in the game.

I got the Graf Spee when she came out. She had a much easier time then, with only IJN, US and german cruisers around. The IJN cruisers are all heavies so haveing a similar reload time but lower caliber. Running into teh Cleveland who was a Tier 6 back then was no fun but everything else was manageable. being uptiered was no real fun even back then, especially as BB players soon learned that you can dish it out but not take it, and many Gaf Spee players in teh beginning tried long range duels. Have not used it for ages, did play it a lot in operations wen they were limited to Tier 6.

dont hold your breath, it's really not that great. It CAN work, but so can most of the ships in the game that are thought of as underpowered. "just play them correctly" goes for most ships.

Biggest issue with Graf Spee in a lot of cases is that she's basically outshone by the tier 7 Scharnhorst (either version). She's a tier higher, yes, but same guns, roughly similar accuracy, similar utility (though she doesn't have a hydro), greater general survivability, better armor, and if it's the '43 version, secondaries that can compensate for lack of HE fire.

@@NeptuniaMorgan well many cruisers can do pretty well these days against Spee or have way better DPM, especially after IFHE rework making 25mm plating more common at low tiers reducing AP potency and leaving it with anemic HE. IJN and US CA's can practically sit and tank against Spee, unless they make mistake to show broadside or get torpedoed. Through primary strength of Spee aka general tankiness (high HP + heal) is still top of the T6 which still makes it useful in modes where there's less ship and damage output to worry about.

They are different class and different tier, just beacause they have the same guns caliber doesn’t mean they are the same. It’s like comparing a car to a scooter because they both have wheels

Nice to see these real steel ships in game. I don't actually play WOWS as I don't have a computer that will run it, but I do enjoy your content. I have a question, are the Admiral Scheer or Deutschland in game? I notice the WG have placed sister ships at different tiers in the past and rebalanced armor, HP, reload, etc. to make it fit. Salt and garbage from some team members aside, I've always enjoyed sailing out in the Spee. Remember it's a cruiser and she'll do OK. HSF also offered a Spee...with decent camo as well.

6 times 8,400 is 51,200 MAXIMUM DAMAGE, IF all your shells land a Citadel hit (never gonna happen). Normal Pens are 1/3 or 33% of the Max damage which would be..... 2,800 for a total of 16,800 Damage. For due diligence if you get 6 over pens that is 840 damage a shell for a total of 5,040 Damage. 51,200, or 16,800 or 5,040 damage depending on your Luck/Aim. On average you probably get 7,000 ish Damage with a Mix of Pens and Over Pens.

1 problem with your calculations though. Due to the terrible (most of the time) accuracy, you can expect 1/2 of your salvo to just miss completely.

Just don't ever get you in a situation in which you have to rely on the guns and then Graf Spee is fine in randoms. The guns will even miss on 5 km distances or overpen only dealing 840 DMG... This happens so often that this is the only damage number I remember from the game.

I liked it, it's not good at any rate not as much due to guns because I think the guns are fine but she eats way to much damage and just isn't durable enough for the dpm she has. Not an easy carry ship, but it's fine if you're not that bothered your session drops below blue or purple 😂 I think her playstyle would suit getting her an upgrade to her torpedo suite, give her 10km or 12km fishes it will suit her playing defensively like you should most of the time. Historical ships do have a certain .. bonus to how I view them, usually at least. It's already playable, or it was when I last touched the game, giving it longer range fishes would make her even easier to play especially at higher tiers where you're not really fast enough to dictate engagement ranges so you don't want to get into a forward position to fast and realize you don't have the support you thought you had.

I really think Graf Spee should return to the shop, but be banned from competative modes. She was only ever overpowered in the later and quite mediocre at best in the former. Yes she'll have that salvo that blows a cruiser out of the water from timen to time, but she wasn't OP in my opinion. I think the Spee is the most likely out of all the removed ships to return. Its annoying that shes so historical yet not obtainable. At least give us the Admiral Scheer and "balance" her out if WG wants to keep Graf Spee locked away.

I dont think Wargaming should take ANY ships off the market, all of them should be available for purchase or earned, they should just learn how to balance their fricken game.

Having a heal at tier6 is great. But god damn these guns are so bad. Also saying it has good armor is a joke. You can not rely on the armor at all. You get HE spammed so hard. Pretty much the same as in Scharnhorst. I never enjoyed playing Graf Spee. In real life this ship was built to sink transports and some light British cruisers. It was a neat idea. But in WOWS matchmaking you get matched against so many things you have no real defense against. It's no fun.

Your mediocre in the Graf. It's a lot stronger then your showing it to be. Also ditch the hydro and go with a full AA build. Yeah I know AA doesn't do anything bla bla bla. My record for plane kills is in this ship 95 in one battle and I have 2 recent battles with over 60 plane kills each. Randoms vs t8s its rough but id still rather be in the graf then any other t6 cruiser. When your top tier this thing can dominate the battle its one of the easiest ships I play at that tier to farm krakens. I even have a solo warrior in a graf.
