World of Warships Blitz - Destroyer Tactics

Apologies for the late upload, this one took a bit of time editing. As requested in the comments, I'm playing some destroyer games, and talk about the respective tactical decisions and maps. We've got two games in the Nicholas, and two in the Kagero, which means of course I'm trying to stealth-fire in the former and brawl in the latter :)

Thanks, and welcome aboard! I've created this channel because I wish there had been one when I started playing, and I didn't have to figure things out the hard way :) I actually do watch a fair amount of PC version channels as well, even though things are different, you still learn quite a bit.

When I play us destroyer I always die but when I play Japanese destroyer I do better I just can’t figure out how to play us destroyers

USN DDs (especially in the lower tiers) have much weaker torps, less stealth, but are more manoeuvrable and have better guns. IJN DDs can stealth torp or do massive damage, but then they're relatively defenceless until their torps reload. That's why USN DDs get smokescreens, so you can get close, unload your torps, smoke up and either disengage or stay in smoke and try to set fires. Imagine you managed to flood a BB with torps, they damage con, and then you're sitting in your smoke for a minute, raining down HE and setting two or three perma-fires. Works the other way around as well - try to set them on fire from mid-range, get them to damage con, and then rush, torp, smoke & disengage. One of my favourite murder machines in the game is the tier 7 Sims. I'll do a video about her at some point, she's incredibly fun to play.

It is not you. It is the game programming. Some ships you choose are programmed to make you lose 60% of the time. The match up is always uneven. You should sell those ships and buy those that seems to favor you. By favoring you, means your team has more hp in total and humans control the critical ships. In some low tiered battle. Often you see a game with 3 human destroyers vs 1 human destroyer with the 2 other human piloting old cruisers. AI destroyers are basically useless. The more they give to your team, mean they want you to lose. 90% of the time, I already know the outcome of the battle just before the start. The match up is totally fcuked up.

US destroyers are meant to play as killers of enemy destroyers, this is why they have better guns. Japanese guns suck, so they had to rely on torpedoes all the time.

Thanks, much appreciated! I find mid-tier games often a bit more brawly, but I it helps to observe what your team is up to, and act accordingly - situational awareness can win your team the game. Higher tier games can often be much more tactical - I've had games where only one or two ships died at the end of the game. But I figure not everyone plays at tier 8-10 regularly (can also be quite stressful), so I try and throw some mid-tier gameplay in as well.

I’ve been playing WoWsB since 2018, but have been too scared of playing Random Battles for 2 of those and only really played Battle V.S A.I, which was just as boring as you’d expect. After a few months or so of finding your channel, I got much better from your advice and now I almost exclusively play Random Battles. Thank you, you are a very underrated channel who is very interesting to listen to👍

Yeah, that used to work in the early days, when BBs were just sailing in straight lines. But now, everyone has a captain with increased torp detection, and players are much better at dodging. So while you've got a very long range, you'd have to be lucky to hit with two or three torps. That doesn't do enough damage (not like in the PC version), and you're basically useless while waiting for reload. You need to get detection down as much as possible, get as close as possible and then drop - I find that you can still play IJN DDs stealthily, just not "never be seen and spam everyone with torps from 9km" kind of gameplay :)

Not capping is a good idea for the obvious reasons, but real consideration should be given to partial capping, that is capping out halfway in order to stop the other team from gaining cap points. You can still go farm damage & kills while having that extra insurance against your own team choking.

Biggest problem with this game is you cannot discuss strategy with your random teammates. Some are a lot dumber than the computer AI. Example: you are winning on points. Maybe 20-30 points ahead. With like less than a minute to go. And some idiot piloting a destroyer with quarter hp left decides to go after a battleship with full hp on a suicidal mission. After all your hard work, some idiot throw the game away and there is no way to tell him to stop.

Dog fighting is my strength with destroyers. Which works out because I’m generally in an American destroyer. When I dog fight or act as a “destroyer” I usually do pretty well, when I act like a torpedo boat… not so much lol

In the beginning of the match you say we are top tier. What does that mean? And seriously love these vids. Play some Graf because I also suck at carriers! Maybe some middle and higher tier battle cruisers as well. Molotov, Takao, Mogami etc. Would be great to watch

Ah, the "top tier" comment is related to the tier spread in the matchmaker. Playing in a tier 7 ship, I can land either in a tier 6/7, fully tier 7 or tier 7/8 battle. So when I say I'm "top tier", I mean I'm in the highest tier ship in the battle (in this case, we had tier 6 and 7). I've got a long backlog of things to talk about, but Mogami has been frequently requested lately, so I'll do a review on her soon.

Another amazing video mate! Do you find using your rank e.g. Commander or Ace Captain useful or is it dangerous as singles you out? Love the Emile Bertin comments and they are valid. I play it very successfully. In fact the whole French line is rather brilliant.

Thanks! I used to fly one of the ranks, but when they reset the nicks recently, I kind of stopped doing it. I know that a lot of the top players sail as "beginner", it certainly helps a bit with not getting focused.

Terry can you do a T-22 game? And what should i prioritize the most as a dd? I have a tendency to brawl with destroyers and cruisers bc i cant stealth torp with just a little more than 6km torps as i always get spotted. I cnt get past enemies bc almost all enemy DD out spot me :(

I usually use AP against other destroyers as they usually don’t overpen which can do some good damage. Currently farming Russian DDs as They’re good destroyer hunters with their fast reload, also fits my hit and run style :)

I love Soviet DDs, but it took me a long time to get good at them. You need situational awareness above all else, since you've got to play them "at knifepoint" to be successful. As for the AP, I've learned a lot since I made that video :)

Nice video man, This game can be really upsetting. On a basis of regular intervals I do damage of more than 70,000 on my tier 7,8,9 dds and yet they give no more than 600 Xp( if our team loses). I think they should focus more on players and matchmaking coz noobs are my ass... Great content though, keep making more videos like this...

I'm here as a BB main player to study my adversary the DD. Understand basic tactics and strategies. I've learned to not get beached. Keep my BB moving. Be aware of my situation. So American DDs are brawlers. Japanese, NINJA assassins, what of the German, Soviet (edit) Swiss, French, and Pan Asian ones though? What are their basic tactics I question?

Clearly not enough Konigs in the 1st battle! Only half the total 14 ships are Konigs... Wow, in battle #2, your teammates paid attn to an enemy ship trying to cap! You can't count on that, and there have been many times I alone attempted to head back to our base to defend, from more than halfway across the map, in battleships no less, while faster, friendly ships ignored the problem, despite being much closer. That doesn't often work out. I've been wiped out by a unseen enemy DD on the opposite side of a large rock. It hasn't happened that many times surprisingly, and it's a tactic I need to start implementing.

When you're in a DD, and park behind a rock, you often get proximity spotted - use the torp guidance cone to see which way a ship on the other side is going, be patient, and surprise them with a spread when they come out :)

I was playing with my Clemson today and realized IT'S SUPPOSED TO SNEAK UP FROM AN ISLAND NOT FIGHT HEAD ON (after that i got a streak of 4 game with 2 kills each)

Good video mate! Kagero is a bit of a disappointment. In her class she is slow and the other DDs kick her ass often.

It took me a very long time to figure her out, tbh. I've been playing her exclusively on stealth, but she's actually a decent gunboat, once you've gotten used to her shortcomings. Speed is poor, so is turret traverse, but her guns aren't terrible, and I often find other ships to be completely confused by being rushed by a Kagero. I've been a lot more successful with her since I started playing more aggressively.

They both have their merits - the slow speeds and lack of smoke screens can hurt IJN DDs in higher tiers, but there's also the IJN gunboat line, which feels kind of in the middle between the two, and is probably my favourite so far.

I've gotten up to the Kagero on the IJN DD line, but have kind of stopped there - she's too slow for how I play. Yama is on my list to get to eventually (IJN BB was the first line I've ever played), and Bismarck is insanely fun when played aggressively. Good luck with the grind!

I've got a video on the Ernst Gaede here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fabHapqKh7Fpibs Generally, given that she has cruiser guns, and German HE mostly sucks, you've got to switch her over to AP (not something you usually do with DDs). German destroyers aren't sneaky, but their torps aren't half bad, and reload quickly. The 150mm AP is murderous against other DDs, and they can't hide in smoke as long as they're in hydro range. I play them a lot more aggressively than IJN DDs. In a Japanese one, you'd go towards the cap, and if you encounter another DD, you'd likely drop torps and disengage. In a German DD, same situation, switch on the hydro, and start gunning them down (don't even bother with torps, unless you have a clear shot).
