Okay, allow me to preface this by stating that I deal cards in a casino for a living. I am *very* well acquainted with how much "fun" it is to win. I am also very well acquainted with how annoying it can be to other players when someone who is just there for "fun" sits down at their blackjack table and repeatedly makes mathematically incorrect plays which, in the short term, affect the outcomes of other peoples' hands. The thing which they overlook, and which I try to point out as well as I can, is that in the long term the play of one or two other people in the game has absolutely zero effect on your own outcome; a player who stands on a 16 when the chart says they should hit will sometimes pass a card on which causes his "teammates" to lose...but will just as often pass a card which causes them to win, or which has no effect on the outcome of the hand. The maths (it's hard to type that in plural as an American) always even out. The same is true in WoWs, or in any other team-based game: sometimes having one or more people on your team who aren't very good or who do something utterly stupid "for fun" will cause you to lose, or will cause you to die in a situation where you would normally expect to survive. But just as often those people will end up on the *other* team, allowing you to pad your own stats back up to whatever your long-term expectancy actually is. Or, as you pointed out, will allow you to shine in a game which would normally have been just another 1-2 kill, 1200-ish base XP match. Is it in any way selfish? Yes, it absolutely is...but anything done for "fun" automatically is, because you are pursuing that activity for your own enjoyment. Does it negatively affect any else's ability to have fun? In the long term, absolutely not...except I suppose in an extremely unlikely scenario where a person playing the game for the first time is so put off by the experience that they never play it again. tldr; Yes. But, no.

+The Mighty Jingles it was long winded, but worth the read. I do remember how "fun" it was to see how close is too close to sail in the Bismarck- but as the mathmetician above said- I did utter crop at first but the lessons I learned by throwing my ship in the worst situations taught me more than any ship review can- because I got first hand experience. Yes, I was selfish but when you rack up 180 secondary battery hits in 2 or 3 minutes with 8 fires set, I believe most people would giggle a little
@blade63218 жыл бұрын
My qualm with this is that, unlike gambling, winning takes quite a bit more- for example, if every game was a simple coin flip where your skill had no impact, that would not be very fun. For example, if in 50% of your games someone on your team did something "fun" which caused you to lose, and the other 50% of games someone did something "fun" on the enemy team which caused you to win, this would clearly not lead to you having a good time, as it would be virtually a coinflip. Not that the game is that simple, or so extreme, but I merely present the case that, keeping in theme with the video, some people might have fun being able to succeed off their own merit and having a close game, not just succeeding. An extreme example is that of feeding, or griefing one's own team in games like Dota or LoL. Some people find it tremendously amusing to do such a thing, and via your logic it does no harm to anyone in the long run- but I can tell you that winning a game you only won because of someone's extreme incompetence (or maliciousness) can be very hollow (and yes, one could debate whether having fun at someone else's expense deliberately, or just playing a particularly suboptimal way are different, but it is sometime's impossible to distinguish from the neutral observer's perspective, and is ultimately a spectrum IMO).

I had a sort of similar experience on the Two Brothers map a few months ago. Before the match starts, some guy on our team named something joker says hey everyone, all rush middle. Before I could reply with "ha ha you're very funny", almost my entire team went "yea... why not?", so I thought hell... why not, it'll probably be a loss, but at least the entire team is being stupid, and we'll all have fun, and then immediately joined the lemming train up the channel. Almost identical situation, except instead of 4 or 5 ships, it was 10 ships. Only 2 guys on the team opted not to come with us. One of their destroyers was watching the middle and spotted the first few ships coming up the channel before he was killed. Our lead destroyer laid a smoke screen at the mouth and waited for everyone to gather up behind it. Enemy battle ships took up position around the mouth. This is where it starts to differ though. Instead of people coming out one at a time like in the video, we actually did a coordinated "NOW", and I imagine to the enemies, it was a bit like that cinematic where all the ships are coming out of the smoke screen, guns blazing... They knew that a few ships were coming up the channel... They didn't know it was practically the whole team. From there it was 2 minutes of pure chaos. Much to my surprise and satisfaction, we actually won that game (by a very narrow margin), and that one game will live on forever in my mind as the most fun I've ever had in WoWS. Everyone by the end of it, on both teams were laughing and having a blast... No hard feelings with anyone... Just a good time.

Yes, winning is fun, but playing like you have a clue is just as fun. When I play, I don't necessarily play to win. I try to use some intelligence and teamwork. Not to win, but because a "good" loss in which the cards were just in your favor can be very rewarding as well.

Exactly the same for me. I do not hinge my feeling of reward or disappointment on the performance of a team of strangers. I am absolutely happy with a defeat if I did well and I am angry about a victory where i failed. Or to put it that way: How is winning fun, when you sucked while winning?

I play to do the best I can for the team, I don't consider myself to be up there with the best players by a long shot, however, playing selfishly often results in a loss for the entire team. Not to mention the loss of experience points and the accompanying repair costs that loss brings. Maybe this approach is all the more instinctual for those of us who've actually served in the military as I'm sure Jingles can attest to. Keep up the good work Jingles, I appreciate your hard work and the entertainment/laughs you provide. Many thanks Royal

The real problem I have with the 'Play-to-Win' crowd is what game are they playing? WoT or WN8? I've watched the hardcore gamers proudly throw a match so they could farm damage by not capping, not killing a low health opponent when higher health targets were available to farm and not lighting/tracking targets in lights because WN8 doesn't count assistance damage in the metric. So there's actually three types: 'play for fun', 'play to win', and 'but mah stats' players. The first type may irritate the 'stop having fun types', but the last irritates anyone who wants to win.
@GOPGonzo8 жыл бұрын
Is it selfish, yep. Have I played for "Fun" in world of tanks, oh hell yes. RDDT2 was sort of notorious for drunk tanking, and it was incredibly fun. But I should point out that we usually did it at low tiers, where games tend to be short and repair bills minimal. So taking three Pz1Cs out for a bit of machine gun lunacy or a is "Fun". Jumping into three St Louis class and going up the middle melt the enemy, why no. But taking out the T110E5s or Yamato for "Fun", and handing everyone else on your team a giant repair bill, isn't nearly as cool.
@blazingmatty1237 жыл бұрын
see this i agree with, lower tiers it's not so bad, if you're playing like that at high/top tier then that's where you start getting into problems and just being a nuisance or even potentially throwing the game for everyone else

Ok people, lets clear the air right at the out set of this. What everyone should keep in mind, first and foremost, is that we are talking about playing a god damn game. The fate of the world does not depend on whether your win ratio is 52% or 64%, the out come of little timmy's combination vasectomy / breast reduction surgery does not depend on whether you kill 3 or 6 enemy players this match, global warming is not going to go away or get worse depending on your teams performance in any given match. It is just a game, something that is done for fun. The only people who should get bent out of shape over whether someone is playing competitively is or just playing for "fun" is the rare ones who play a game to make a living. Which by the way is not 99.99 % of the people who are going to comment to this video. Hell, to be perfectly honest, 99.99% of people who play games, no matter how much they like to brag or berate others in game chat, are capable of being professional game players who can make a living out of it. IT IS JUST A GAME, its not real, it will have no bearing on life in general, it is just entertainment. If you can not enjoy playing a game because the other players who are playing with you are not playing competitively enough, then perhaps you need to rethink why you are playing games in the first place. Sorry this rant is long winded, but I just needed to get this off my chest, thank you.

Good Question Jingles. Glad you asked!! This will probable piss some people off but it needs to be said. People play this game for different reasons. Some people play because they enjoy the quality of the game (graphics, game dynamics etc). You can call it "fun" whatever!! Others play because they find personal validation thru winning. For most it is a balance between the two Playing for fun which most of us do is fine but show a little respect. Depending on the game there are between 23 to 29 players depending on you to do your bit. Just do it and don't waste other people's time. As for the special cases - Team Killers I'm looking at you - WOWS and WOT seems to have your number but only if the rest of us report them. I certainly do. I believe this is a theme that Jingles frequently returns to. For those of you who are winning obsessed - as William Shatner once said "Get a Life!!" This is a game, not a career or lifestyle. No-one outside of this community really gives a shit what your win rate in random battles is. If you don't like what the other random players do or are convinced that you are a superior player then enter the game arenas that cater to you. WOT has lots of them (competitive clans, e-sports etc) and I'm sure WOWS will get there. Don't crap on people who are just playing the game because they want to have fun. Most are trying to play to the best of their abilities and you need to respect that. Abusive comments through in-game chat or post game pm's are not respectful. If you can't do better then you are little better than the Team Killers I guess the theme of this post is respect and some tolerance. Think about it

indeed, but does it look like a fun game when your teammates cause you to lose all the time? i don't think so, and therein lies the problem... if this was a single player game.. sure, do anything you want, even if it's totally stupid as long as u have fun... but in a multiplayer team based game... if you do something totally stupid, that has consequence to ur teammates...

This is the very problem with the world culture at large. Thinking it is only the responsibility of the lesser to carry the burden of the weight and getting none of the reward but to tow the line. There is no reason the tactic would not have worked if the rest of the team coordinated better in the beginning. If those beginning ships moved up the channel and the rest en mass went around one of the brothers the enemy could have been caught in a nasty pincer. If the one's for fun were playing in the channel then the pros should have seen this and not been so cowardly. All life can turn on a dime. It is the duty of the novice to push the envelop and the duty of the pro to define the boundaries. If one group is having fun at the expense off the other, who's fault is that, own up to your responsibility and give credit where it is due.

I'm a card gamer. I play MTG and Yu-Gi-Oh! a lot. While I certainly play to win, because, as you say, winning is fun, the decks I construct are built for fun. They aren't always the best deck I can build in terms of win rate alone. But they're quirky and I enjoy exploring these card games to discover new interactions in interesting synergies. That's where the fun comes in. I always play to win, but I don't always win. However, I always have fun doing the best I can with the decks I've built. The point is, you can play to win and have fun doing it. You can also play to win and have fun losing. With these less than perfect decks that still have an interesting character, you're not always going to win. But when you do... hoo boy, doesn't that make all the losses worth it? Sometimes you have to choose to do something generally stupid and just run with it. Because sometimes it works out and the results are amazing. Play to win, but don't forget to have fun losing. Enjoy the game and interacting with other players who share your interest. Play to win, but don't be afraid to take a risk and do something unconventional every now and then. Because you never know... you might discover something previously unknown to the community. And discovering new tricks, even if they don't always work, is a lot of fun.

Same thing though. Even in Team Deathmatch, taking a risk can sometimes be amazing, or sometimes a failure. But it's always hilarious if your match is full of decent people. Don't forget Rule One: Never understimate teammates. it gives the enemy somebody else to shoot at.
@darkenwarrior8 жыл бұрын
guess it depends on what game your playing. I'm no pro at warships, barely play it really, but games I'm more competent in, say, Heroes of the Storm; if you get 4 guys that know what they are doing and trying to win while 1 person just keeps doing something silly like getting themselves killed over and over even after people comment and try to help and they just reply "playing for fun" well that's just like trolling and selfish and not being considerate to anybody. I hate it when I fight a team that has somebody who is throwing the match because in every moba, for the most part, 1 bad player can fool up the whole game, at least in higher ranked stuff.

I play destroyers in WoWS. Sometimes I die, but I always make the other team *earn* that kill. It's a blast to play. So long you're doing your best and they're doing theirs, you know the game is going to have been worthwhile playing. Enjoyable for both sides.

well I guess that's the difference there, people who play their best and are trying, doing both having fun and trying to win, that's all anybody can ask for. Intentionally doing bad and just saying "playing for fun" is selfish.

I TRY to win. I'm just not very good. I'm sorry that my skills cause other players to have to carry me. I don't want it that way. But for the most part, that's the way it is. And I love naval history so don't tell me to find something else. I won't. I do ask you to try to understand that some people, although they are trying their best, just aren't very good. So they HAVE to play for fun.

I almost always play any video games for fun. I don't mind of I lose, though obviously I try to win. When I say "fun" I just mean I don't get all upset and salty about a loss. I know this isn't an easy thing to do and I know the phrase "it's just a game" but I just stay calm and have fun doing it. Yes doing something for fun is incredibly selfish, it loses the game for everyone else just for your enjoyment. This is what I think a lot of people mean when they say "I play games for fun". It means they just aren't as competitive about it. Winning is fun yes. advancing through tech trees, earning money and learning new things. But you should never get to the point where you smash a controller or break a screen just over a loss.
@donniemontoya93008 жыл бұрын
A lot of games especially like WG titles, the players care a lot about each other's stats. which is just insane. I always try to win a match. I use teamwork, follow other people's orders as well as giving other people advice. But caring so much about a little number is insane
@fendelphi8 жыл бұрын
The "for fun" here is meant in a "ya-ha, I dont care if I end up dying within the first 3 minutes, as long as I can have my "fun".". Those who dont care if the team end up losing, as long as they get to mess around("let us see how many full circles I can do before I get destroyed in this match). If people want to do that kind of stuff, custom games and possibly Bot games, are the way to go. But as soon as you go into a random battle or ranked, you should play by the "agreed" rules and try to win. What we saw in this video was basically a 4 man suicide. As Jingles said, if it had been done later into the match, it might have had a positive impact. But so early in the match, you will get spotted and people will focus you down very easily(no room to maneuver), and you should know that by the time you play at tier 6-7.
@jimheaton95038 жыл бұрын
Agree(with Donnie, for the sake of clarity). Insert default XVM comment here. I'm a pretty poor player, as my stats suggest (poor early choices like grinding the DW2 line as my first research are not a massive help, but I'm still fairly awful) but in some tanks on some maps I do OK, for me ;-) and might surprise a non-tomato who thinks he's got an easy kill. That said, people like to compare themselves to other people rather than themselves yesterday. If their acme of human achievement is a Unicum WN8 rating in WOT or some such then Sliphantom has it down pat. They are "inflating their internet penis" and much good may it do them IRL.

Don't get me wrong, if I lose it's not really all the big a deal in the grand scheme of things, if I get annoyed I'll just walk away or whatever and come back to play later, but the thing is that somebody else deliberately being a dipshit is affecting whether or not I get to have a fun time. It's kind of like if you were playing a single-player game and somebody walked up to you and started pestering and distracting you and otherwise making it impossible for you to enjoy yourself with that game. Yes it's just a game and there's no logical reason to get overly worked up about it, but I don't think many people would consider it out of line to get annoyed in that situation.

You know the funny thing is this could all more-or-less be settled with either a competitive mode or competitive MM. That way people who "play for fun" as it were can not bother the rest of us. Stating playing for fun is a crime and all people who claim they play for fun are selfish, is arrogant. team based multiplayer's will always have the assholes but also the people that only play to win are just as annoying and selfish. How many times have you been in wow or wows and somebody is spamming the map demanding they all do as they say and follow his instructions as hes a pro and winning its absolute. calling everyone noobs and idiots uninstall. If you want fun I recommend un-ranked un-rewarded games of any kind, where the fun is found in the gameplay not the idea. A players reputation is the only thing that should be gained. Halo 3 is a perfect example of this. Most if not all rts's as well.
@shidder_mutt8 жыл бұрын
That's why Halo 3 is the greatest video game to ever exist.

no,its right. you are more specifically rewarded to do your best as that increase chance to win,therefore to be rewarded ,otherwise there would be no real incentive to play properly

devilsmessanger A simple rank for player performance would be enough. it worked for Halo 3 so why not this? I mean sure Wargamings free to play products have no real content but that is the fault of the developer for emphasizing addictive grinding for real world profit. Rather then a content rich game that keeps players interested through gameplay not "next tier of same thing". You probably disagree.

I try to win and aid the team while having fun, but I do not get too upset by players having just FUN in the game, it is called a random game for a reason. I do get annoyed with some players who demand everyone follow their lead or those who become abusive in chat, be polite. Each player has the freedom to follow their own path and play how they choose. Those players who wish to be totally serious and dedicated, good luck but concentrate on team matches. It is after all a game and should be fun for all. Good question Admiral, keep up the good work.
@buk12378 жыл бұрын
When the game is a close match say down to the last few ships, I don't mind the loss. When my entire team gets wrecked because a few people did something stupid at the start of the match, that frustrates me. Yes you are here to have fun, try and get a bunch of kills and see what happens etc. I am also here to have fun and every now and then I will something that is ballsy or stupid because it might just work or at least do something useful for the team. Because if my team wins, I benefit from more xp and credits. And at higher tiers, losing your ship gets expensive, so not only do I have to need my team to win, I need to play well. Which is difficult to achieve when most of the enemy is still alive and shoot at you. If you are playing for fun, you should do it at tier 6 and lower. For an average game in a Fletcher they might earn 160-200k credits on a win. If they die, it costs 151k just on repairs. It is much more painful for larger ships. It doesn't matter if you can afford to YOLO. If you do something stupid and it ripples onto the rest of your team that's just selfish. Not everyone can put a lot of real money into the game and have to grind for their credits and xp and setbacks are frustrating. You should always try to win, but know when you can do something "fun", ie when the game is quite in favour of your team winning.

If you not very good, I'm not and I don't think I can ever be, I play for an hour every once in a while. I sometimes do stupid things, and if people are being their usual assholes in chat I will not do what they demand. I use the word demand, since they (almost) never suggest, they order you or just call you a noob. They never explain. They never try to lead at the start. For that reason I never do as they demand. Being polite is chat can do wonders, but being an asshole almost never get a positive reaction. One of the reasons people do stupid thing is that is is suggested by someone else, because it's nice that someone comes up with a plan, any plan. Quite often it's a total silence at the start of the match, and any plan seems better than none. I try not to do stupid things, but if you are an asshole when I do I will not listen. I will listen if you are taking your time and explain why it's a bad plan, or come over to me and say something like "let me help you get a good game." The first of those has happened once to, and three times by me. The second never I think.

I think everyone plays games for fun. I have no issue with people playing like a complete potatoes from time to time. I do it myself, 1 game carry like a boss, next derp out like a noob. The issue is that many people think they know how the game works, while in reality don't have a single clue. So everyone gets called a noob or cheater or whatever. Which is only evidence of players ignorance about basic mechanics. These kind of players comprise of more that 2/3 of player base. There have been a lot days where I got into teams that manage to lose 8 players in 2 mins. After 5 battles in a row like that I start wondering whether I am playing with same species or have monkeys taken over the server. There is no way even a single player on these teams is having fun. Hence I play for fun line is just a load of horseshit.

I agree with most comments with playing to Win in Ranked Modes, and playing for fun in Random Battles. Usually I play to win until RNG starts to irritate me, then I play for fun just to relieve some stress. But I'd also like to comment on the battle itself, as I believe that those 4 ships didn't entirely throw themselves away, as they were distracting a large portion of the enemy team for a while, keeping them out of position. This helped those teammates who went to the usual flanks and were able to destroy the enemy team.

Thing is, getting your arse kicked is not fun. Specifically when in games like world of tanks you have to pay ingame money for a defeat. Still sometimes when you do exceptionally well in a match you feel entertained, but there is still something int he back of your head that keeps telling you how much better it would have been if it was a victory. All of this makes WoT the most infuriating game i have ever played. But its till my most played game. And the only game on my PC. There's just something about it. However, when i used to play MW3, in the gun-game mode, all i did was knife people and decay their gun rank. And feasted on their bitching and screaming xDD So obviously i never won any game, but it was fun as fuck!

Jingles the hard part of your question is what is fun. Each person is going to think of it differently since fun by its very nature is an individual's concept. I like to be aggressive in my ships, hence why I am better with Japanese DD's and big old battle ships. Do I play to win usually but I also say you can't be having fun with your NC or Iowa sitting on the 10 or 1 line because your afraid to scratch the paint. This means the heart of the question really gets down to do I need to change my fun so someone else has fun? Personally I say no. Everyone should look for fun in their own way. Sometimes this means doing a Leroy Jenkins others it means footing around a whole game spotting for your team. Ah hell at this point I will see if I get yelled at and Jingles no mater what I have fun watching your vids so thanks shipmate. Doc

No, it isn't selfish, IF you stay in lower tiers. Playing 'for fun' in tiers 1-4 is completely appropriate. Playing seriously in those tiers is pure sealclubbing. An experienced 'fun' player is about equal to a play-to-win noob. Playing for fun in Ranked Battles in WoWS is completely unacceptable, that what random battles are for. If you want to experiment with tactics, WoWS PvE mode is the best place for it.

Not neccessarily. I like to win as much as the next person, but I find it fun when the team does something different every once in a while, even if it's stupid. A lot of matches tend to play out very similarly. Each map dictates a certain playstyle, and this to me gets boring sometimes. When I do things the right way, routinely, and we end up winning, it's sometimes less fun than when we end up losing, but are having a fun brawl int the middle of the map or something. The idea of a multiplayer game is to play with other humans .. any way the game allows you to.

In the context of the replay, that early move down the channel was a wee bit silly, however I would not go as far as to say it was selfish because it patently was not. Let me explain my POV... I play both WoW's & WoT's and, in the general scheme of things, I am not very good at either game, yet I really enjoy playing them. So, to take your argument to its logical conclusion, perhaps the question should be re-phrased: 'Is it selfish & unfair of players with limited talent, such as myself, to continue to play team based games?'. Anyone with a modicum of intelligence and humanity should know the correct answer to that one. Frankly I find the question you posed to be demeaning and disappointing in equal measure, and I should think the developers of these games would be less than impressed if your line of thought led to any loss of revenue.
@eruantien99328 жыл бұрын
The thing is, even the lowest skilled of players is more useful alive than dead. You say anyone with a modicum of intelligence and humanity, and of course you should be allowed to play, that's the point of these game; but like most things in life, you have to be aware of the affect you have on others - if you play in a "normal" way, ie not yoloing at the start and getting your arse handed to you, then *everyone* (hopefully) gets to enjoy the game, if however you throw your tank/plane/boat/whatever away at the start of the game, you may well have just prevented the rest of your team from actually having an enjoyable match. Do what you want, so long as you're not having a detrimental effect on the lives of those around you.
@christophergasser42808 жыл бұрын
I don't know, I've bad players who contributed to their team and bad players who you just wish were on the enemy team. Like the other reply, just being alive had a positive effect on your team. A simple example is holding a corridor in tanks. I was in a 3v3 situation and my two allies yolo'ed out and died and thus the enemy tanks advanced knowing I didn't have the DPM to destroy them all. If they had just stayed alive I would have been able to defeat all three teams thanks to my superior position.
@Cthippo18 жыл бұрын
I'm wit Sgt Rash on this one. the attack up the middle was dumb, but I don't think it was malicious. Maybe they didn't know better, maybe they were just frustrated and wanted to kill SOMETHING, even if it meant throwing away their free-to-play virtual ship. It may have been like a head on in War Thunder, likely to end badly, but at least you do some damage. In any case, getting mad at another player for playing badly is a recipe for being mad all the time. If your enjoyment of the game is dependent on your team plating well, then maybe it's time to play something else.
@Edi_J8 жыл бұрын
This is not the question of "talent". This is basic understanding of your own limitations and simple will of becoming useful for the team, not only "having your own personal fun" at the cost (time, credits, fun) of others. When you're being told by multiple teammates: "don't go there, it is suicide, we need you alive" - you just listen. Not very hard to do.

When I decide to play any multiplayer game I usually play for win at least to some degree. When I think I have done enough I sometimes do silly moves to have fun. What I mean is that until I have K/D ratio higher than one I'm pretty serious about it but once I get 3 or more I consider my duty mostly fulfilled and I might try something pretty risky or just stupidly heroic. In some games I would capture a point few times or something like that but if rest of the team doesn't support me in my effort I would usually give up and go for kills (ideally some tricky equivalent of "noscope360")

Did that, once. It was 3AM on PT, people were drunk or asleep, and it was fun. I would say it depends on what the enemies are doing in the other team. In my experience, there's different levels of playing for fun. There's simply not caring and doing what you want, and then there's doing something silly but playing at your best. Example of the second, three man ELC/XM800T platoons, racing around the map causing chaos. Not a smart play, but those people who do it are playing at their best, and to win, in that situation. Plus, causing chaos allows your team to move up while the enemy team focuses on you.

Here's though, there's doing it and there's doing it without that thought. i'd be annoyed by it, but randoms, I have really, really low expectations. Fun is great, winning is pretty good. It's not the only reason you should be playing though.

I am of mixed mind on this question. I can make this observation specific to Tier 6 gamers. I elect to play the Dunkerque. This makes the match challenging since I have only 2 forward turrets. The AZ or the NM would give me better odds of winning. I have to work to avoid being sunk from hits from the rear. Team mates have called the Dunk "useless" because I do not charge in like the Light Brigade. Instead, I fire HE from a distance and burn the bad guys down. Slow but effective. It is not the dive through the channel and blaze away but it works for me and I am usually afloat at the end of the match.

I've always been an extremely competitive gamer, and when I'm playing multiplayer games that are at all competitive in nature, I play to win. Winning's fun, sure, but I also don't mind losing if the match is close and I've given a performance I can be pleased with. The thing is, when you're playing a competitive team-based game, you *must* keep the objective in mind, because playing counter to it is going to spoil the experience for however many teammates you have. If you "play for fun" by doing stupid shit that becomes detrimental to your team's efforts to complete the objective, then your teammates have every right to call you out for it.

I think Jingles put it in nutshell when he said - it's a teambased game, play for the win. If you want to play for "fun" - play coop. You can derp around, test things, etc. But in any ranked, team or random battle mode it's about winning and pulling your weight. We all derp sometimes, that's not the issue. But the way we treat it - if you frack up, admit it and don't blame it on "playing for fun". Just say sorry, try to learn from it. Derp at a moment where victory is ensured, not at the beginning risking your teams effort right away. Basically just do what you'd expect your teammates to do - and you'll be fine.

I'm just not yet all that great at this game. i do know that I will try to run in a pack and help where fire is needed. on the two brothers map, we will sometimes wait for the bulk of the force to round the flanks and send a couple cruisers with torpedoes or again boat and 2 destroyers up the middle. we nearly always get good results. we only do this if there is no carrier though.

Only reason I know of Gae Bolg is thanks to Fate/stay night where it and the guy known for wielding it turn up. It's that series Jingles has a couple of figurines for - the ones of the blond swordswoman in a blue dress.

I don't mean to defend the suiciders, or in any way insinuate that their actions were more beneficial than detrimental, but at least they kept the majority of the enemy team distracted for a short while, thereby reducing the number of ships that the rest of their team had to deal with. So for the first part of the game, their allies were able to mop up the faster ships on the enemy team who got ahead of everybody who stayed to shoot at the tactically inept.

When I know a game is hopeless, then I'll try and have my fun where I can. I remember way back in CoD4's multiplayer, having defend an HQ and when that happens, you can't respawn till the HQ is capped. We were about to get nuked by all the grenades ever, so I just decided "Time to have some fun", ran out of cover, jumped a wall, and mowed down a small squad of guys with my LMG. I remember my team asking "Why are you doing that?" and replying "Was about to die, decided to have fun". And it paid off. I got at least 4 more kills than I was expecting to while defending the HQ. And I died anyways, but I could at least remember that time I decided to shock & awe the enemy when they weren't expecting it, and got to enjoy the game as well. But that was a pretty hopeless situation. I was pretty much stuck, and decided if I was going to go out, I'd go out on my terms. Sometimes having fun means knowing when you should have fun. And going Rambo on some guys... that was fun.

My opinion is simple in this regard when it comes to games like WOWS, "If you do not play to win, you are not playing the game." These are by nature and design competitive games where your actions have a clear effect on the outcome. If you are so bad that you cannot have fun without throwing your hull away find people that can help you get better. If you want to play for fun load up GTA or something along those lines, where the objective of the game most of the time pretty much is have fun and wreck things.

Having done this very thing before, I can say it is fun. But I've also been on the other end of this, it's challenging, but also fun, but I can see the frustration.

It's been a while since I played this game and correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this game have a "Ranked battle" option for the people who play to win? If you participate in a random battle, well... it's sort of in the name. You can get all kinds.

To me, the fun is in doing my best and playing to win. If I know I have done everything I possibly could and taken several of the enemy with me, I don't mind losing nearly as much as when I know that I screwed up. Of course, if I have had an exceptional game and our team loses anyway because of some people goofing around (such as in this example), I do get a wee bit upset, needless to say.
