This is an accurate take. Because of the bad implementation they have just generated so much hatred that people still see them in that way despite their near irrelevance in battles now. CVs are a different story, and still very much deserve the hatred they receive.

I would agree if homing torpedo range was 1K less than all airstrke one tier below the sub and they all had access to normal torpedos with longer ranges. But that would require skill on the sub player so it’s never going to happen

Wrong every aspect of subs and CVs just sucks to play against them they simply dont fit the game and if their was a game mode that excluded subs and CV's every man and his dog would play that mode instead and randoms would be empty and that is a fact that you cant argue

Try to play any DD with an enemy sub around, he can keep you permaspotted for his teammates to wreck you. This is the single most powerful thing a sub can do, not pings, not homing torps, just consistent, unavoidable spotting. And WG seem to think the same, they increased the BXP yield of subs in order to allow them to get insane amounts of XP without dealing lots of damage. They incidentally nerfed DDs BXP yield btw, for the same reason in reverse

It isn't the damage that subs do that makes them annoying. It's the inability of many ships to strike back in most situations that makes them annoying. It is the same reason CVs are hated.

What is it to like about them? I obviously missed this bit. I like challenge, so class designed for braindead is not fun. I am not sadist, so class designed to frustrate and torture other players is not fun. More reasons to stay away from randoms.

More cruisers need submarine surveillance, not the long-range ones. It makes no sense why some ships don't have ASW and can only drop off the ship. What special power do ASW ships have? It's clearly a radio call to land or an invisible carrier. Adding more subs would be a terrible idea until the balance is complete. Right now if you join a game and a sub is on the A flank most folk sail to C away from the sub on A, Why well the above explains why. All ships that have radar should have the option to switch that before battle to submarine surveillance.

With the usual Soviet bias, I figure tier X is Victor-class or Akula-class. But then again, the way that underwater speeds and detectability are with these subs, they are all like the Victor-class or Los Angeles class underwater.

Subs simply cripple playability of certain ships. If you play ship like DM next to island they simply ping you and pump all those torps into your ship. ASW doesn't have that enough distance, dmg con is pretty useless, they have ping ready much faster, radar doesn't work as against DDs and they got even captain skill telling them depth they have to be to avoid from active surveilance. Then you go in match where you are one of 2 cruisers in team, the rest is 5 BBs, 3DDs and 2 subs. It really reminds me CVs who have well lend time in match playing from max distance coming with manually "guided" armament. Subs are that much broken class that they have lend time with roughly 5min activation time for sub surveilance. No other class has such luxury playing undetected from start of match.

exactly, the double standard stems from a subs increased concealment capabilities with torps not reveling you when you launch them, exactly like a dd. while a dd can be spotted if he shoots his guns all a dd needs to do to hide is pop a smoke and move a little, just like a sub diving and moving a little. the real differences between the classes is one trades main guns for 3d movement while the other stays at the surface and burns things from being islands or in smokes. both classes get punished if spotted and really are specialized to stealth and ambush/burst tactics. like yeah it sucks to get outflanked, to be spotted but not being able to spot back or getting sunk by percentage damage but that's how its been for 10 years now, whoever has the best positioning usually holds an advantage (weather they have the skill to utilize that advantage is pretty much always up for grabs)

subs used to be good until the changes when they nerfed shotgunning. for some reason they made it impossible (practically) for subs to detect each other. i liked that combat. torpedo shooting ships is fine in co-op but i can imagine playing in randoms with a sub now.

Remembering all my sub v sub battles. Either one sub engages and wins. Or both subs attempt to duke it out and both die because of SS and the mutual hatred of the class stops all conflict to send green and red planes out to interrupt the honorable 1 v 1

Adding mines to the game -- especially as an area denial effect --- could have been an interesting mechanic. The Kreiserskaya-class 1 was a mine laying vessel and all of her credited kills were attributed to mines. Yeah, I know, nobody cares.

its funny how these submarines have absolutely nothing to do anymore with submarines the submarine surveillance nonsense is still a thing and I don't understand why WG is not completely overhauling this class I think this entire submarine line is going to fall flat on its face, because you can't shoot unguided torpedoes from those ranges with such a high detection when everyone has ASW ready for you and destroyers hunt you down without subs being able to fight back with the new arming distance subs have become wierd torpedo destroyers that don't work in WOWS instead of submarines

Wow. I found subs to be glorious in Asym. But that is with me driving, and I am almost always the last ship alive, and I win every time with the sub. It is in fact the perfect game mode for them. I rarely have as much fun in Randoms, where the nerfs really worked to mitigate subs. Trouble is most sub drivers are clueless and get themselves sunk quickly, leaving their team down 1 contributing ship.
