I just found out a couple of minutes ago. This man was one of the most criminally underrated and overlooked songwriters of the last 200 years.

He got a massive push in 1990/1993 in the UK, he was all over Q Magazine & Co, not sure what happened, I suppose the reception of "Egyptology" wasn't what was expected, maybe it arrived too late.

Pretty sure I was the only 7th grader in my tiny Midwest town that listened to World Party. This song has always been special to me. And hearing it now, floods me with memories of an awkward kid who thought way too much. I miss her. ❤️

Karl is one of those songwriters like Jeff Lynne who makes his verses so catchy and then somehow the hook is even better. What a talent.

I only heard of World Party yesterday when I clicked on a Letterman performance Dave's channel posted in tribute. I'm just bummed I hadn't heard of Karl sooner. This song is amazing.

Wallinger was/is so underrated. I remember in the original video he was playing an upside down acoustic a la Cobain as he is left handed. Incidentally, I always found this song very philosophical, so the Bertrand Russell reference was most agreeable.
@LosBerkos2 жыл бұрын
Same here, but he is apparently right-handed. Any chance of an interpretation of these lyrics in the context of Russell?

Karl is so great, as a performer, songwriter, philosopher. I have rediscovered him in recent times and began to learn some of his greatest songs. They give me great joy to play and contemplate. Thanks Karl!! Ship of Fools is still one the greatest songs ever... still relevant today.
@TotalCobblers6 жыл бұрын
Fabulous version of "Is it like today" and also IMHO Karl's (original) version of "She's the one" is much better than Robbie William's cover version. The mandolin on this version of the song is fantastic. World Party should have been given far much more acclaim than they were. So insightful.
@Goodywagon5 жыл бұрын
Got a unique and cool opportunity in '06 or sometime around then to see them in the Square of Troy, NY. It was Karl and 2 other (sorry I don't know your names). Karl played acoustic, there was a mandolin, and an acoustic bass. It changed my life. I already loved his songs b/cy dad has a great taste in tunes but that show, his pure talent did it. And he was recovering from an aneurysm... Helllooooo!!!

As a child found this lyric very powerful. The whole concept of coming face to face with God, and that it could be a 2 way conversation with bafflement on both sides. Waterboys led me to Karl and World Party and both will always be big parts of my youth.
