Oh he will. Remember, the title is progression of the world record. He had revisited several that have had significant progress. It's about time. Though I've noticed usually it's discovery of a new glitch or tactic that prompts several people having a back and forth with the record for a bit before it stabilizes, which makes sense. Shaving a little time while impressive, isn't earth shattering progress. But finding a new move that allows others access to the top level, getting others in the competition, now that's progress.

What's funny is, "KPDR" is the intended route. At least, it seems like it with the way you get power-ups. It's crazy that it took so long for people to look at doing the bosses out of order, especially since they are using tricks that allow them to skip some power-ups anyway.
@nameforcomments40926 жыл бұрын
I dunno, there are a TON of categories for this game, with Reverse Boss Order being one of the more known (and crazier) ones, so it's really more that people hadn't put enough thought into optimizing every aspect of a full run for speed with virtually every combination of bosses possible. Thought of that way, it's more understandable.
@juyifan79335 жыл бұрын
Is not that they didnt think about it, is just that many tricks had to be figured out before the current route became viable. The current Phantoon kill method took a while to be figured out. Without it, going for Phantoon first was a bad idea since the fight would take way too long without a 2 cycle kill method. Also to even consider the current route it was necessary to know all the quick speed boost tricks necessary in lower norfair. Untill behemoth came around and figured out all the necessary details, the route was simply not viable. In short, they did look into it, but there were several technical difficulties to be solved before another route was WR viable.
@samt34124 жыл бұрын
Kraid before Ridley is definitely intended because of the Varia Suit being a necessity for the average player to get through Norfair.

@Bulb 66 it is, it's why it's so surprising nobody considered doing a different boss order for a whole decade
@BeALight-i3z4 жыл бұрын
Well, it makes sense the intended route would be the fastest. The order you get the upgrades hugely impact how fast you can get through an area. Consider this: It took years of research and experimentation with different routes to find a viable one, and even then, it only saved a MAXIMUM of around 100 seconds. I think that’s more surprising than anything.

@EebstertheGreat5 жыл бұрын
@@jijonbreaker There is also not much reason to switch to real time. In SM, the choice of timing has a major effect on the route used, but in Fusion, you have to take practically the same route no matter what. It's worth mentioning that the KPDR boss order used by Smokey and other runners of the time is the same boss order that the game designers intended most players to use. Although Smokey skipped many parts of the intended route ("sequence-breaking") like the miniboss Crocomire, required to get the Grapple Beam, he did not change the boss order because at the time, this was still the fastest route known within the capabilities of the runners. The sequence breaks Smokey used were still very significant though. For instance, the Grapple Beam allows for a relatively quick kill on Draygon, which becomes a difficult fight without it. There are some inaccurate claims in the video. For example, Smokey fought Mother Brain with 5 energy tanks, so none of her attacks could kill him in one hit. Today, top runners fight her with just 3 tanks, the minimum possible, so if they get hit by a single red beam ("ketchup"), they will not have enough energy remaining to survive her "rainbow beam," which is unavoidable. Probably the biggest omission though was Twocat. While Zoast and oatsngoats were grinding the 41, there was fierce competition at the same time from Twocat and Kottpower. It was a four-way race for quite a while before Zoasty and oats really started to pull ahead. Behemoth started to catch up too. The way you describe it makes it sound like oats and zoast were the only two in the running, which is just not the case. And it's still not the case today. Behemoth could easily show up and behemoth oats any day now. And indeed, all of these runners mentioned (along with a few others) have world records in at least one category.

shoutouts to me in the chat at 18:04 !!! (Swaaz) best game ever made !!! garrison got me into speedrunning long live the king that in my opinion made the game more popular into what it is now today considered "mainstream" zoast and behemoth are living legends, ive even skipped meals just to sub to zoast during hard times just for the sheer amount of live entertainment he has given us all oh and cant forget the god of ceres oatsngoats (who has turned PC lately which was unfortunate but he is still awesome) im soo passionate about this that i cant stop without mentioning kott aswell... this comment has turned into a mess now

Looking at the LB now, zoast is back in first, nearly all of the top 20 scores in any% were submitted 1-5 years ago. The most recent scores were submitted 1 week, 3 months, and 4 months ago, at #10, #16, and #13, respectively, with #20 being 42:57, an already extremely difficult time to get. It's one thing for the top 5 to stagnate, but for the top 20 to stagnate and given the barrier to entry even in the top 20 means any% is dead until someone strikes gold again. The scores on the 100% cat are all much more recent.

@BradenBest Жыл бұрын
@@faaltoh I have to nitpick your wording. When you say something "aged like milk", you are implying that it is wrong or made a bad prediction. I said "any% is dead _until someone strikes gold again"._ According to you, Zoast got a PB in October and any% has since revived. This does not contradict what I said.

i came to see if my fellow salt x super metroid heads would be here sounding the horn. i am not disappointed. the story of this record from 6 years ago to today is very interesting and im not sure i even know all of the details. i only really know of oat's most recent superhuman grind to reclaim the top spot. i would lose my mind if this game/cat got the modern salt treatment and i know im not the only one. fingers are crossed for a new sm any% video.

Behemoth and Zoast's achievements over the last several years were spectacular, and now ShinyZeni has become a top tier player doing a lot. I'd like an update to this video but a complete history of 100% would be sick too. Either are long overdue

@Eyedunno Жыл бұрын
Not without somehow incorporating a lot of TAS strats. I still think 40:2X will happen some day, but it's gonna take amazing RNG. Oats barely made any major mistakes (only two that I noticed, both in the last 20 seconds, and he maybe lost one second to both of them put together) and almost all of his time losses were due to bad drops and other RNG (fast-fast Phantoon would have been nice).
@faaltoh Жыл бұрын
This video deserves a 2023 update. A new technique, "moonfall" was relatively recently discovered and has pushed down the theoretical time by quite a bit. On top of that, Zoast has perfected a level of execution that seems absolutely unreal. The current WR by Zoast is now 40:45 with 27 min in-game time which is absolutely BONKERS. Nobody seems to be willing to even try beating it any more. Also, as another commenter pointed out, it would be interesting to have a look at 100% runs as well. Peace.

Amazing that this has since been brought down by 1:10 to 40:46 as of last week. 40:2X is probably possible with current routing, assuming perfect execution and favorable RNG.

Hey man, you should consider updating this video. It'd be really cool to see you talk about how these runners have continually pushed the strats in new route from old route, and have really made this run a hair raising effort as it is today. This video here got me into watching speedruns of this game years ago, and since then, the runners have just done absolutely bonkers things. Zoasty is currently on top with a 40:46 time, and Behemoth87 is holding second place with a 40:56. Zoast landed a 40:55, and was grinding to improve his time for months, then earlier this week had two runs back to back a day apart that went to 40:50, then 40:46, and he's decided to temporarily stop the grind. He's actually practicing old route to see what can be pushed there!

I think if you were to list everyone who got truly involved with it, the video would be much longer and less enjoyable. As it stands it's a very nice summary of any% (which was never really my cup of tea TBH.) He did mention Kottpower (as he did hold the record back and forth with zoast for a bit), and if he ever does 100%, he'll have to mention me!
