2 other explanations to Aaron Crow's trick- 1. When shuffling the boxes, he felt which one had more mass and thus had the knife. 2. There was a small piece of thread attached to the bottom of the box with the knife

Possible methods but visual identification is faster and easier so your point 2 is more practical.

That's what I was initially going for but:: 1) It would have over complicated the trick. 2) Why did each of them have their hand behind the display shelf then? How hard can if be to use just one hand? After all its only a light plastic cube.

This is done not only for time and production reasons, but also because it's a magic trick that is being presented out of context. The trick is a close-up trick, designed to fool someone live, right in front of you. Not people at home who can zoom in on your every move.

Sorry about that, should have been clearer, The large coin is in his right hand, the small coin he initially displays is pushed into a finger palm of his left hand. Well at the sametime he pull out the large coin horizontally from his right hand.
