We utilized an adapter that is meant to propel crossbow bolts using a powder charge at high velocities (instead of using compressed air). This was proposed to us by Joerg Sprave of the Slingshot Channel- since he could not legally make this in Germany. He and I have also wanted to do some sort of collaboration for quite some time. The barrel of this has a 6mm ID and Danny discovered an airsoft bb would fit perfectly inside. He created a bunch of .38 loads using various amounts of powder. Not TOO bad for just screwing around huh? I think with further enhancement we could hit hypersonic speeds (+Mach 5)
Yes, aluminum airsoft bb's are a real thing. They are no more dangerous than plastic bb's in reality. (do a YT search) We were not sure if plastic bb's would hold up to the blast and we wanted a heavier bb. But we did test one .20 gram plastic bb in this test too.

JoergSprave Got it. Will try to get it sent to you after the First of the year. I bought these many years ago. ( before PCs) and have never seen them since. I believe they were called "shot box's" made by WHAMO products. They are made to hold 10 BBs and be shot from a slingshot. Great concept. Good for hunting bird and similar small game.

@Desklamp1234
@Desklamp1234 4 жыл бұрын
The flash when the bb hits is from due to a couple of things. 1 is due the the spherical shape means the first contact point on the target is a very small surface area. 2, because of that the momentary heat generated is enough to ignite the air around the BB. The same thing happens with a mantis shrimp. Its claws so quick apon contact with a shell it causes a flash of light and temperatures reaching the surface of the sun for a fraction of a second. Very cool stuff.

@@SlavicCelery nope. this is the same thing that happens when a mantis shrimp strikes a crab shell underwater. it heats up the water so fast (around 4700 degrees Celsius) and creating a flash of light. aluminium does not flash when its burned. Physics causes strange things to happen at very high speeds. like everyone knows a nice breeze cools you down? but too much wind and the opposite happens. like a space shuttle shields melting on re-entry in our atmosphere

I think that calls for an attempt on the record, perhaps a modified .38 casing or something similar but longer (I'm not all that "up" on firearms, being stuck in the land of 12Lb air rifles and 6Lb air pistols, AKA the UK) but if you were that close with 10.25 gr then I'd suggest not much more than 10.75 would be enough... Obviously this number has likely risen in the last year, so you'd want a casing to hold at least 15gr to make sure of it... All from a smoothbore firing a ball too...

You can only get so much accuracy from a ball shaped projectile. More interesting would be to see how fast you can push lead pellets that have more aerodynamic shapes and better engagement with rifling in the barrel. Although it'd still be really interesting to see how much accuracy you could get from these BBs.

For those who are wondering about the flash; aluminum is actually highly reactive with all aluminum exposed to the air oxidizing almost instantly, so when the aluminum ball is destroyed that rapidly it all reacts at once and explodes.

It's one of the side benefits of the 2nd amendment. Private citizens can build and experiment with firearms, develop improved and innovative technologies, which can and does benefit ours and allied country's militaries. One of the best examples I can think of is the Barrett .50 cal, used all over the world and developed by an American man with no background in manufacturing or engineering. In most countries, small arms design and manufacture is strictly government controlled.

Could it be that at the speeds these were traveling, that the friction of impact in such a small area is just creating enough heat to cause that flash? I'm thinking in the vein of the heat that a pistol shrimp creates snapping its claw....

I think that flash is plasma. It's a forth state of matter that i think in this case the pellets sublimate from a solid phase straight in to a plasma and it skips both liquid phase and the gas phase. This is probably due to the incredible pressure that occurs when the pellet makes contact with the plate. This focused energy point releases the bond between the atoms and electrons of both materials and causes the flash. I don't know but it seems like that could be whats happening :) Or it's the air compressing at the point of impact that causes the flash. Like what happens if you shoot a gun under water. Smarter every day made a video about that.

I think a rifled interation of the adapter insert is in order and copper even mild steel BB's. also, i noticed the for end of the adaptation is just slopping around there it needs the same afforded as the breach so as it's not just wiggling around in there. you get those issues sorted and something tells me that shit will be a lot more fun to experiment with. they make .17 or/ .177 rounds. I'd liken it to a muzzleloader version of that. maybe the last resort to putting food on the table if a catastrophic O' shit happens. when any O' shit event happens in our live's we must adjust I can see the scenario very well, going down like that. so many of us are not ready for such a thing. I could see how getting caught with your pants down would cause one to adjust in just that manner all just suggestions one more though for you guys to digest at the outer forend of the breach a sleave magnet would work to hold any ferrous material BB in place so it doesn't roll out the end. air rifle companies use something of the sort, regularly. having said all that wordy stuff my interest is in seeing how little propellent could be expended for the maximum effective range as to outlast a sudden change in order to not just survive it but begin to thrive again. it also could be used to conserve the high calibers needed to protect you and loved ones while enabling you to still get grub on the table. i know this was just meant to be fun but fun can be made to be practical. only if all things could be fun to arrive at practical solutions. keep up the good work boys and have your fun where you can.
