+The Dollar Guy This is where everyone is wrong... The only time a black widow is lethal is when you're severely young or quite old. It's pretty much our only deadly spider in the states but I think the brown recluse does the most damage. If you got bitten by one of them, it'd hurt for a little bit but you'd be fine, wouldn't even need to go to the hospital unless you were perhaps allergic.

So here's my answer to the two great debates raging in the comment section: 1) No it's not animal abuse. Yes, spiders are arachnids, which are animals. No, the spider does not have emotions and is not being traumatized by this tragic experience. A spider is not capable of emotion, reasoning, or higher consciousness. 2) Yeah he probably should have killed it. I have nothing against spiders and I really appreciate them out in the ecosystem getting rid of other bugs. No, I would not have killed any old spider in my house. But _that's a freaking black widow_ - I'd say it's not incredibly sensible to go spinning extremely venomous spiders around your house...
@teddyl70069 жыл бұрын
I have empathy. That means I'll avoid torturing or killing living things. That doesn't mean that I won't reach for a can of Raid when I have a problem with ants, bees or other insects. It does, however, mean that I won't go out of my way to kill insects or spiders because they're simply alive and I hate or fear them. Also, you can't know that a spider doesn't have emotions. I'm sure you're going to argue brain size, not being able to communicate or even (the weakest argument) as simply not being a human. This is something that you can't prove or disprove. Finally, the brief torture of the spider on the turntable wan't excessively horrible. I would have left the spider alone but I did find the video educational. The spider had to make a decision. It eventually made the right decision and was returned to where it belonged.
@MattWinkler19 жыл бұрын
Teddy L Boulden I'll try to keep my reply brief since honestly I don't think we're disagreeing on very much here. 1) I have empathy too, and insinuating otherwise is an ad-hominem attack and unnecessary. However, having empathy doesn't mean I have _the same_ empathy for spiders and humans. I agree with everything you said here actually - I don't go out of my way to kill things, but I will if I have a problem with them. And if ants or bees causing a nuisance is enough to warrant killing them, then a rather deadly spider in my house is more than enough of a threat to justify a little squish. Honestly he really shouldn't have brought it into his house in the first place, avoiding the whole issue, or could have used a non-venomous spider instead to negate the threat. 2) Frankly yes I can state with reasonable confidence that spiders do not have emotions or more than negligible consciousness. No, I'm certainly not going to say that it's just because they can't communicate. No, I'm absolutely not going to say it's because they're not human, that's a silly argument for anyone to make. Yes, I am going to argue brain size, because that's just a fact. Spiders simply don't have the nervous system to process or create emotions or feelings. Saying otherwise is very much akin to suggesting that a TI-30xa calculator can play Metroid, that you just don't know it because it doesn't have a good enough graphics card. No, the processing abilities are just not quite there. 3) I agree with that too. I never said the torture was excessively horrible or anything, though there's certainly a few people who do say that in these comments. And I found it educational as well, basically the only difference is that I think it's stupid for him to go playing with black widows when a house spider or something would have worked just fine. Of course, given the mercury and guns Taofledermaus also plays with, I doubt the threat was much concern XD So much for keeping it brief :P
@teddyl70069 жыл бұрын
Matt Winkler Okay. Let's extend the computer metaphor. Take two computers. One with 2 quad core processors, 32 gigs of ram and a couple of graphics processors. Now take a computer with a 6502 processor 64k and text for graphics. Add pain modules to both machines. The 2 quad core processor machine experiences pain with color and texture and I'll call it HD-Pain. The 6502 experiences pain in a number from 0 to 255. Now activate both pain modules. Both machines process pain. You're right that the retro computer can't experience the HD-Pain, but it still experiences pain. Spiders respond to fear and pain in ways that I would respond if I was that spider. I can see myself experiencing that pain. If I was that spider, I wouldn't want to be hurt or killed. I have empathy so I'd rather leave them alone. The spider on the turntable is also a good example of some type of decision making or consciousness. It had to make a conscious decision to curl-up and let go even though it would clearly put it into danger or even be killed. Finally, lets not forget that even human beings have been treated as though they were without feeling. Some slave owners believed their slaves to be lesser than they were. This is hard to say because I find it horrifying, but these slave owners (the worst of the worst) didn't even consider their slaves a human. The jews during World War II were also treated as though they were without feeling. As humans, we can also treat other humans as though they don't experience pain. Never the less, the spider is a spider and I occasionally kill them. I just don't accept the argument that they don't experience pain. The only way to prove it is to become the spider and that's something neither of us can do.
@asleeplessgamer9 жыл бұрын
Teddy L Boulden Good points man, but please just run away from bees if they are becoming aggressive, we need them and they are still dying out due to natural predators and humans. Ants? Eh, I leave them alone and just try to patch places they get in from if they get in my home. Killing ants just leads to more ants. Wasps? Fuck wasps.

Sorry to nit-pick your physics. The force the spider encounters pushing it outward is NOT centripetal force its centrifugal force (which many people incorrectly term centrifical force). Centripetal force is the force the spider must exert inward, toward the axis to counter the centrifugal force which is pushing it away from the axis. You also state the spider has the option to take the path of least resistance and move/stay toward the center axis. While the centrifugal force on the spider is less closer to the axis the path of least resistance will always be to move away from the axis. There is less resistance moving with the centrifugal force which is pushing the spider way than to have to overcome that force and move toward the center axis.

That being said, a very cool experiment. Also, when I heard you use that line about Jane, first thought that came to mind was the movie, 'So I Married An Axe Murderer.' A hilarious flick. In fact, I think it's about time to dust it off and watch it again.

very often moving them outside means killing them regardless; either due to cold, lack of food or lack of shelter. lol. alot of spiders now thrive where they previously could never live due to humans homes.

Black Widows threat is so overblown its ridiculous. Its only a threat to the infirm, the very old or the very young. There might by also an allergic reaction in some cases as well. But by and large if you are a health adult with no allergies to insects and you get bit itll likely be no worse any an average spiders bite.

An interesting thing related to Black Widows: Blue Mud Daubers (the metallic blue wasp-like things that live in mud homes) live almost exclusively on diets of black widow spiders. So if you see Blue Mud Daubers it is pretty much guaranteed that there is a sizable Black Widow population in the area. The opposite is not true however... a lack of Blue Mud Daubers does not insure a lack of Black Widows. Partially related: Blue Mud Daubers do not build the mud structures they reside in, they exclusively refurbish mud structures that other mud daubers have abandoned, so if you clean out too many mud dauber structures, you won't have any blue mud daubers around. I also am a big fan of spiders, but I also like to encourage mud daubers.

Only you could make a spider on a turntable actually sound scientific enough to use as a citation for a basic entry physics class... I used to have a black widow that lived behind the license plate of my Trans Am. I let her live there for about a month and every morning she would make a web from my bumper to the garage door and she would run away whenever I'd walk by. Then after she started not fearing me anymore I didn't want my cat to walk up to it and get bit or anything so I took her out. I bet she was just deaf as hell from being at ground zero of my car on a cold start every morning lol.

I tried to read as many comments as possible, I didn't see anyone point this out... the turn table is producing centrifugal force, not centripetal force.. Centripetal is like how a satellite stays in orbit with a planet, that's when the spinning nature tries to push the object away, but at the same time it is pulled back in by gravity. Nothing about the turntable pulls the spider back in, other than the spiders on will to try to walk back to the center, which is not related to the force of the turntable. If I've gotten this backwards, feel free to correct me, but I'm pretty sure I'm remembering this correctly.
@alexhaag139 жыл бұрын
No. You're wrong.
@slightlyokvideos9 жыл бұрын
satalites stay in orbit because they are constantly moving outwards from launch and gravity keeps them pulled in. thus they stay in a relative location
@AnimeSummit9 жыл бұрын
Technically Centrifugal force isn't a force at all. It is the appearance of a force based on a rotating frame of reference. But yes, Centripetal Force is an actual force that causes an object to follow a curved path, and said force must always be perpendicular to the velocity vector. So the satellites velocity vector has it traveling in a line, and the gravity acts as a centripetal force to pull that object into a circular path of travel. In this case, all the forces of friction between the turntable and the spider at actually propelling the spider in a circle on their own.

@xxx_blazeitmichael_xxxsmit60259 жыл бұрын
+Ynse Schaap "one of nature's most deadly spiders" yeah no. Black widows don't even come close to the being one most deadly spiders, often black widow's bite don't even kill. For the venom to kill you, you would have to be allergic to it, it is similar to bee venom, but more potent, so if you are allergic to bee venom it may kill you if you don't get to a hospital within 24 hours. Now a Sydney funnel-web that'll kill you pretty quick, and it actual is one of the most deadly spiders.
@YnseSchaap9 жыл бұрын
XxX_BlazeItMichael_XxX Smith I know, but Coming from a country that has no real wildlife, and the deadliest animal is a bee, this is a very dangerous spider ( and I'm allergic to bee's)

This reminds me of a haunting memory of mine. Black Widows are not always black. Sometimes they can be green, brown, or some other non-black color. When I was a very small child, a friend of mine was collecting insects, and we across a green spider. A large one... We tried to catch it in a plastic tube much too small and the spider spazzed out and went up his arm. He did not get bit, but looking back I now know how close he was to death. Respect your spiders.
@ROACHCLIP810 жыл бұрын
now go catch it again and see if has the ability to walk on mercury after that test tube torch it but be sure that it (explodes) then you can return it to its natural habitat to escape criticism =)

That is the most beautiful black widow I've ever seen. Seriously, I've never seen one that big, she must be gobbling those moths. And anyone worried about the spider's health: any insect that size or smaller is basically a mini tank. Chitin is tough stuff and it's not like they have enough inertia in their internal organs to get injured there either. That kind of tumble won't bother her at all.
