The car was built to meet a production class sanctioned by the SCTA. Per the rules, the exterior must be stock (a huge aerodynamic hurdle), and you have to retain the dash and door panels. You can change engine internals and such, but you can’t exceed specific displacement levels depending on the class. -CL

Took a test drive with the 2013 Jetta Hybrid on a 80 mile run in city and hwy driving and had a 48.7 mpg average...The car was very comfortable and the ride excellent.If you put your foot in it the turbo has little lag and the engine is strong thru the mi-range.Best of all it doesn't look like other hybrids....

He mentioned in the beginning, it acts like a nitro, which means, it adds torque to the torque from the turbo 1.6 engine. So both engines run at the same time.

He was saying something about it working like a sort of boost, like Nos or KERS I think, earlier in the video, but I don't know if it can be used at any time. I'm sure they re-mapped the electronics to gain at least a little more push from the batteries during the run though.

As said below, F1 cars are hybrids and they will do around 220mph maxed out...and go around a track a hell of a lot faster than, well, anything.

Glad you realised I was joking. We don't Bonneville-esque speed trials over here in the UK so the regulations are completely alien to me. Obviously safety features aren't considered alteration as they are a requirement but the bigger turbo, batteries and such are classed as modifications to a production vehicle. I wonder how the Cadillac 5.7 hybrid will do? ;-)

Damn! That means I can't fit a rocket to a Prius because I'd need to change the body for the burner outlet. Hybrids actually make sense in this case as they're already as aerodynamic as possible to reduce drag for efficiency sake and just happen to give a performance advantage by default. note thats standard but if you swap the eco wheels and tyres for a softer compound and lighter also suspension some dead weight and engine mods the hole car will change drastically

awesome video. I do have a question. In what was this really a hybrid? I mean yes, it has a battery pack and all the same gear that the production uses...but really you upped the gasoline turbo power and the pack is doing nothing right? Seems like the electric side should have to do something to qualify for the hybrid record. I don't that much though, this is cool stuff!! Check out my amateur reviews if you get a chance.

Apparently you misunderstood what I was saying... The electric motor is not ONLY used until 7mph - It's just the only thing used until then. After 7mph the car uses both electric motor and combustion motor ALL the way to top speed... again - i.e. "Hybrid".

I think there should be a high pressure turbo at high RPMs to give it the great performance and the electric motor only works at lower speed to aid acceleration, kind of like a smaller turbo. The electric motor should be powerful too, at least more than 100 kilowatts.

Impressive speed. The world of high performance is about to be changed by Hybrid technology. Imagine hybrid cars in the very near future with (4) 120 HP electric motors (one at each wheel) that possess maximum torque off "idle" (combined horsepower is 480) and with computer coordination that allow real time AWD ? Power for the electric motors is supplied by a efficient 2 cylinder motor (in a generator role) and propel it 0 to 60 in 2.5 seconds or less. Great time to be a car guy.

i have a prius and i drag race regular cars and let them eat dust, remember a prius is helped by its electric motor so it gets a boost. I don't know why people think prius are slow, you gotta drive one to know.

I had one too, Having a big 7.3l powerstroke in the back and leaving the Prius engine in so i can pull up to a lite and put the powerstroke on and make people turn there heads

No, that is just how i pictured you in my head. I think this is far from useless being the first development of it's kind. true the electric motor doesn't do much at all at those speeds but the fact that they are pushing the limits of a hybrid car, setting records and ultimately garnering interest does have a use in the grand scheme of alternative drive trains. Don't think of it in terms of mechanical advancement, rather an advancement for the industry.

A Prius can accelerate up to at least 25% faster by upping the voltage output to the motors, it'll drain the batteries in no time but you can win stoplight drags from much faster cars. A garage owner from around here has a really fast accelerating Prius that I've seen beating a Golf Gti, but he also has a Smart ForTwo that will out accelerate a BMW M3 up 100kp/h. He calls them his 'surprise cars :) Just do it... love those kinda cars... wolf in sheepskin :)
