The world's first air hijacker was a South African Air Force pilot serving with the RAF. Find out how he and his British and New Zealand crew managed to free themselves from Italian captivity by the novel method of hijacking the aircraft that rescued them!

Talking about Italian seaplanes: did you that there was actually an Italian gunner... ace?? His name was Pietro Bonnanini, he became famous at first when his slow and obsolete scout plane was intercepted by the Raf. Ground control though that the plane was lost, until they reported that the gunner was able to gun down one plane and scare the others off. After this Pietro managed to repeat this feature multiple times, scoring 8 confirmed kills and 2 unconfirmed, against hurricanes and spitfires. A new rank in the aviation was created just for him, as they didn't know how to promote him and the Aeronautica wanted to recognise this particular hero

Italian captured by the British died in large numbers as the British just treated prisoners, even children and civilians like shit. I have a friend which is still alive and was a teen son of a civil engineer working in North Africa. When all his family was taken from their home by the Brits of 6 people 3 survived starvation and disease in a British prison which lacked food, toilets, clean water and was extremely hot. Generally the soldiers that fought the hardest in Africa where the Italians that got freed by the Germans after their advance specifically because British prisons conditions were so bad. The Americans were better.

Wilkinson masterminded the escape plan and executed the actual hi-jack. Strever simply held a gun on the pilot (after Wilkinson took it from the Italian guard and passed it up to him). Strever got the DFC cos he was an officer. Wilkinson got the DSM, a lesser battle honour, because he was just a lowly sergeant. Apparently this caused a bit of bad feeling at the time among the air crews in the Beaufort squadrons on Malta.

What a cracking story .WOW........My old Italian neighbour told me his dad was in charge of 20 trucks during the North Africa campaign. He was told to turn left towards the German line .He turned right and handed everything over to the Allies as he and his pals detested Mussolini so much.He said as a kid he used to jump off the bridge into the last German truck and throw a few boxes of food out .Said it was dried food that expanded well into a sort of bread mix .Brave kid I thought looking at his now old face .Anyway another fine video from Mr Felton.

Dear Mark, thank you for uploading this video. I am Maltese. When I was still a young boy, I remember my grandmother (God rest her recently departed soul) recounting how she was swimming at St Paul's Bay once and a massive enemy seaplane landed right next to where she was swimming. She recounted how Italian soldiers (captives) were then taken out of the plane. According to her they were wearing beautiful white uniforms and smiled at the swimming Maltese girls. The Italian POWs were then escorted away and had to be protected by the British soldiers as a Maltese mob tried to attack them. Do you know where the Italian seaplane mentioned in your video was landed? Could it have been the one my grandmother was referring to (the one landing in St Paul's Bay)? I remember her telling me how she always wondered what that event was all about... she would have probably loved to see your video were she still alive. The only problem I see in reconciling these stories is that I remember her referring to the aircraft as a "Dornier". Could it have been a separate incident?

You should do a story on a neighbor that I had before he passed away, Captain Bill Overstreet and The Berlin Express..his P51 Mustang. He shot down a German fighter flying full speed under the Eiffel Tower. He also had the only fighter in the European Theatre with red wheels and white wall tires. He ones tried to get credit for a German plane he had shot down. Only problem he had traded his ammo for vodka and the pilot did bail out and it was on captured on the gun camera. This story was told to me personally by Capt. Overstreet, oh, by the way... his squad members...Bob Hoover and Chuck Yeager ring a bell?
