I am just amazed at the care Japanese people take in growing and selling their fruits. What I can't understand is how expensive these fruits are. Honestly I can't imagine who can afford these expensive fruits.

I worked for a year in Miyagi prefecture that's adjacent to this (Yamagata) prefecture. Being originally from a subtropical island, I spend my free time driving and exploring these northern prefectures. One day while driving amongst these cherry orchards, I stop at a stand selling cherries. I knew these famous cherries would be expensive and they were, but when I went inside, they also had packs of cherries that had failed the beauty test. They were rejected because they didn't have the perfect shape or had a tiny blemish. There was nothing wrong with the taste and they were being sold for 500yen a pack. I bought two packs. Best cherries I'd ever tasted.

Perfect fruit has its place, but so does the ugly fruit. I love cherries so much that as long as the fruit is ripe, not rotting, and is safe to eat, I would probably gladly eat it lol. I have no idea why I have not tried growing my own cherries.
@sabin974 жыл бұрын
i eat imperfect fruit all the time. it's just as good as the perfect-looking fruit. i rarely buy fruit because my family is huge and everyone has some fruit trees of different kinds. unless you're super rich it makes no sense to pay the ridiculous premium for the beautiful cherries.....

*These cherries did not look any special though.* *Japanese "expensive" stuff is so overrated sometimes!* There was a blind test conducted for champagne somewhere. The "experts" always thought the more expensive ones tasted much better. They were given the same champagne under different labels.
@sabin974 жыл бұрын
i agree in general. the japanese are very disciplined, follow instructions, wear masks, etc. but there no real reason for those cherries to be so ridiculously expensive. it's like certain very dark watermelons. they are super expensive, because the only people who plant them, plant a very small amount, so demand is high but supply is extremely limited.

Expensive and "perfect" fruit is part of the gift giving culture in Japan. In business situations and such you are almost expected to bring a gift, so fruit has become just that, a casual gift. You can think of it almost as flowers or diamonds. They've even got stores specialising in selling perfect fruit as gifts. It's really cool actually.

The first cherry was already exported to Europe from its place of origin in Asia Minor in 74 BC. The Roman general Lukullus brought from the port city of Kerasos (today Giresun in Turkey) to Italy. These plants are the predecessors of today's sweet cherries. After the city of Kerasos, the cherry got its name. In almost all European languages, the name of the cherry can be used to refer to this city. From Italy, the cherries were then spread by the Romans. After all, today it is spread all over the world.
