In this video we showcase and test out the most expensive socket organizer I know of...VIM Tool's Mag Rail. Despite being very spendy and a little underwhelming initially, it wound up being a pretty solid option for storing our Pass Thru Socket Set.
Time Stamps and Links
@0:00 Intro
@0:36 Harbor Freight Go Thru Socket Set
@2:15 How to Store?
@3:26 Spring Steel Rails
@4:30 MTS Lock-a-Socket Rail
@5:00 Ernst Twist Lock Socket Rail
-The sockets actually kind of fit on the 1/2" Pegs...it is only friction, not twist to lock
@8:52 VIM Tools MR12B 12" Mag Rail, $24.48

@9:52 VIM Tools MR-SB 1 Pack of 10 3/8" Studs, $3.08

@10:15 VIM Tools MRLR1 1 Pack of 10 Mag Rail Lifters, $5.68

@11:00 Insanely Expensive and Difficult to Piece
-Between the lack of a comprehensive breakdown with part numbers and descriptions on the main site to conflicting information, or pictures on distributor's sites, buying this stuff is an absolute paint in the butt. Love it, or hate it...there is a ton of room to improve the retail experience with this stuff.
@14:41 Filthy Packaging
-Nothing else in this order was dirty, the box was in tact...it was isolated to the rail itself
@15:50 Magnet Test
-Not near as strong as you are lead to believe in online videos
@16:17 Pieced Together
-It shouldn't be hard to find matching parts, and the standalone parts almost never cost less collectively than a standalone kit
@19:36 Clean Rail
-The customer should neverr have to clean to this extent for a "new" product
--The fact the dirt had ingressed thru the plastic sleeve is concerning and NOT recent...there is a lack of oversight somewhere along the line
@20:16 Peg Fitment
@20:46 Lift Hook Fitment
@21:00 The Mopar Mat vs the VIM Magnet
-Again, it is decent, but definitely not the strongest we have seen
@21:25 Socket Test Fit
-Peg and No Peg
@22:15 Downside?
-If you DO NOT want the sockets magnetized, you might avoid this system...if it is desirable to have a magnetized socket, or you don't care, it is a fairly practical system...especailly for an oddball socket set like this
@23:26 El-Cheapo Bonus
-You can definitely use the bottom side to effectively double your storage with this rail
--It may be a downgrade, or it might be an upgrade...depends on your preference and available space
@24:20 Verdict
-This is not going to supplant my prefrence for Ernst and MTS, but it does have possibilities with odd ball stuff. I would also wait for a sale and time...the time being critical to piece together the order without having to invest in an armada of Magrails. I can definitely see how some people would like these though...but again, shop around to save some cash.
@25:35 Pittsburgh Impact Test
-Definitely too heavy for carrying, or vertical use
@27:07 Fully Populated Double Wide Mag Rail
-Yep, rather than spend $60-ish to store these on (2) Mag Rails, I went for the double wide option
@29:35 Pass Thru Sockets
-If you use these a lot, what are you using? This set, something exotic, something custom?
@31:10 Pittsburgh Tray
-Not as good of an option as with their standard sockets
--Could use this if you don't mind running screws and cable ties to keep it in tact
@33:05 Bad Start, Happy Ending
-Trying to buy this sucked, they are expensive, but they work really well for these sockets
@33:48 Double Sided Rail?
-I'd like to see it...just a bit stronger than what we have done here...would you buy one? They might have to be thicker
@34:45 Lower Price
-A lower price would help, but I'm still leaning towards Ernst and MTS
@35:22 Final Thoughts
-Happy with the end result...not happy with the hurdles to get there

@37:49 Conclusion

I use the mechanics time saver 11" mag rail for pass thru sockets and miscellaneous specialty sockets/adapters. For the last 10 years it has worked me.

Just the flat Magna Panel? I could see that working. I really like the labelled Lock-a-Socket rails and have honestly been pretty happy with the friction peg trays.

Yep, despite all the negatives, in the end...it turned out to work well for the pass thru sockets. I'll consider it a win!

I have all my sockets on hyper tough rails from Walmart. They're ok

I've never used them, but they look decent...and they may be one of the best looking affordable options out there.

Vim makes nice stuff but their prices have gotten absolutely out of hand. They also try not to warranty anything unless you buy directly from them (which is also the most expensive). They're quickly going from one of my favorite mid tier brands to one of my least favorite.

This is just my experience so can’t speak for yours but, I’ve warrantied products directly with them and haven’t had an issue(knock on wood) yet. Sucks you have to pay the $10 shipping fee but up until now no issues.
@Callelle6251

@Ilovetools12 I don't mind paying shipping, but it's the whole "you have to go through who you bought it from first". Every other mid tier brand you snap a picture and they send a new one, no matter who you bought it from.

I'm not too invested with VIM, but that is good to know on the warranty. I kind of get what their stance would be, but when they are positioned with similar brands that make the process easier, you have to either improve on it, match it, or be prepared for some criticism. I've intended to buy the half cut bits (a full set anyway), but have never found a good enough deal on them.

@@Callelle6251that’s strange because they have stated on their KZbin channel that they will warranty their products but charge shipping if not bought through them. So unless you have actually experienced this then sounds like spreading BS.

I have a KTC rail, appears to be identical to VIM, very strong magnets etc. may be cheaper?
@lonestarmopars
@lonestarmopars 2 ай бұрын
Yep, I'd be shocked if they weren't both in the same factory. The KTC would be limited color wise, but since they come with the pegs, I think you could definitely wind up with a better price point.
@billyboyd418
@billyboyd418 Ай бұрын
I’m sure vim is making them for KTC since they make tools for many companies, they have the patent on that magrail design. I find the vim rails online for cheaper than their website, the 20” is about $40-42 each instead of $58 from them.

If that's expensive then you haven't seen the Hazet Smart Rails, they go for roughly 30 Euros or so (it's been a while since I checked their prices) and that's locally. In the US they'd be a hell of a lot more expensive.

The SmartRail is spendy over here. I've got one and really like it, but also got it on sale with the included sockets. I've seen mixed reviews on them, but for what I've got...it is awesome. Also, this video goes back awhile and the SmartRail wasn't out yet.

I was thinking maybe it would be good for Oxygen Sensor Sockets, but I don't think it would be strong enough
@lonestarmopars
@lonestarmopars 2 ай бұрын
I'll try that. Sensor sockets are always hard to find a place for...I have them set off to the side, or on cut down Ernst rails.

Only in the end, lol. I'm definitely more of an Ernst/MTS type, but for the pass thru sockets, especially since I don't use them often, this is honestly a pretty solid setup.
