Anybody else remember when these types of portables only existed in photoshopped youtube thumbnails? The scene was probably around in the mid 2000s, but I am really fascinated with the optimization of core components needed to run the system on original hardware. Fantastic job on the system.

I remember you from the BenHeck forums. Crazy how KZbin lead me here somehow all these years later. I was a regular there too - ElectricRain. I was the crazy bastard that was desperately trying to finish Destop's Gamecube disc drive emulator but ultimately failed because I lacked the proper skills to bring the project from 95% complete to 100%. That thread ended up being one of the longest in the history of the entire forum, hahah. I was pretty active in the N64 section too. I spent the majority of my teenage years on that forum. While it may be just a memory now, it's nice to see the scene is still somewhat alive! Nice build! Too bad we didn't all have 3D printers back when the scene was kicking, yeah? Everyone always envied Triton's frankencase skills, AKA the Bondo king, and Marshalh was unmatched with his vacuum formed cases. Now there would be no reason to use anything but 3D printers!

The amount of effort put in to learn the circuit you might as well went to a 3rd party PCB manufacturer with a revised design, sold the PCBs as a kit.

im a firm believer in the vintage hardware, its sturdy an reliable. I havent spent a single penny on new consoles or vehicles in over 5 years, instead ive gone backwards. Nothing satasfies me more than clicking on an old console. Its purely nosthalgic for me as a 90s kid. Great work gman.

Cool concept until you realize that you're literally holding the cartridge in the back. If you grip the wrong spot too hard, youll pull the cartridge out i'm sure. Not to mention that im sure just moving a little bit too much will cause the game to freeze. Negatives aside, i'm sure this could be perfected if more time and money was put into it. Must have been fun to make.

Imagine decades from now we'll have "mini console" amulets that hardlight-project games in front of us. You take the amulet and run it over the bottom of a disc, and boom. It's saved to the amulet and ready to play anytime, anywhere.

There's a sense of awesome that it's physical nintendo 64. Just knowing a fan knew how to do this and did it before nintendo did is something to be proud of! Well done! But, it's also impractical for portability. My cellphone with a mini blu-tooth controller would do just fine for me.
