Three questions for you, 1). Who is India's adversary Air Force? 2). What capability do they have? 3). What does India need to develop/purchase or borrow to meet its medium to long-term goals? Replacing Mig-21 Bisson Junk with another expansive EU junk would not serve India in any air superiority domains. R & D and improving local industry with a strong economy and better infrastructure are the best options for a country like India.

While comparing and analysing fighter aircrafts, most people forget the fact that such an aircraft flies in a "squadron", heavily customised for one specific role within the formation. The war is very network centric in today's age, even an F-35 is designed to work in formation with f15s and f16s. The f35 detects and others shoot.

Excellent analysis. India has taken a very pragmatic, cost efficient approach to design and manufacture of fighter, trainer, transport aircraft and helicopters. Gen 4.5 fighters like Tejas, TEDBF which will inducted into squadron service progressively from mid to late 2020s will have the latest and future ready electronics, powerful engines, radar, weapons, avionics systems. AMCA which belongs to Gen 5.5, will join squadron service in the 2030s. It is planned to be upgradable to Gen 6 capability. Given the size scale of India's defence requirements ready availability pool of engineering talent, a cash rich and pragmatic India first Govt policy everyone now wants to do business with India on our terms. No matter the cost, the F22 is the only reason any Air Force on Earth fears or respects the USAF. No one can find that fighter jet before it finds them - be it strategic bombing escort or complete air dominance, the F22 is most the fearsome plane that any rival air force can meet. In case of recon mission or bombing run inside enemy territory, the F22 silently snipes out any hostile fighter that has been scrambled to target the bomber and the F22 can recon by itself. In case of BARCAPs in a squad of a number of F15s and F16s, only a couple of F22s will be marking enemy fighters, flanking them unnoticed and taking them out before being a threat by simply engaging in a precise BVR. So, USA's backbone fighter numbers will never dwindle or lost to enemy fire despite the number of missions they undertake. Russian air force performance in Ukraine has shown it had to fly low to the terrain to do bombing runs and have lost a number of its Su34 bombers and Su24 ground attack fighter. While the fighters could have bombed precisely without flying low too - but they did low flying to prevent being detected by modern enemy radars, by blending into terrain. Russia have not used its Su57 or the MIG31 strategic fighter extensively, either due to their low numbers, but their Air Force was surely lacking the need of something like the F35 which the Su34 clearly is not. They even lost one Su35s though it developed tech glitch while being pressed into an operation not suited to its parameters. Ukraine did not offer much of an air superiority fight, but ground based air defense had been phenomenal, which again reiterates the fact that a stealth plane often evens the odds by taking out threats before they become real for the non stealth platforms. When it comes to India, we have to be clear about what exactly defines a 5th Gen fighter? Does having a geometric stealth body is mandatory or can it be substituted by electronic stealth mechanisms? Yes , we are having an active stealth vs passive stealth consideration here. While active stealth is an add on which can convert any 4.5 Gen fighter into a 5thGen fighter, effectively, but its effect would be short lived because it needs huge amount of energy to constantly use that EW suite which mandates the need for a sophisticated and strong engine too. Hence not all 4.5 Gen fighters can use active stealth. The passive stealth guarantees an additional omnipresent layer of stealth alongside active stealth components to make a plane non detectable by radar for a really long time, since there is a fight between aerodynamics and geometric stealth to retain performance for the fighter jet in air combat, the engines on these planes are always the most advanced, powerful and cutting edge, which easily make place for active stealth too. Hence this is the advantage of a complete 5th Gen fighter. The most advanced plane in IAF's service right now is the Rafale, for which the French chose to sit out the F35 program altogether , since the Rafale has been built with most cutting-edge active stealth technology and has great degree of modular passive stealth components on it though not the complete geometric stealth body. France , which is one of the 5 permanent nations at the UNSC, an European super power which has engaged itself in conflicts of Africa recently, still bets on the Rafale as their only primary and backbone fighter relevant till 2040. So. India will use the Rafale like the F35 itself and will possibly induct higher numbers of the fighter's F4 variant which will come with latest tech in 5th Gen air warfare tech, like multi mode data linking , powerful EW suite , BVR weapon package et cetra minus the operating costs of the F35. Our immediate rivals do not have the ability to challenge a Rafale with the current inventory even though they have a 5th Gen fighter like J20 , but it is not a F35. The best J20 can be described is a Su34 with geometric stealth . In future - our in house force multipliers, interceptors, multi role combat aircrafts will all derive abilities from the Rafale and improve on it , even the TEDBF. But our true fifth gen project AMCA has been and will keep deriving inspiration from the F22. India may also pitch in for the Su75 if it gets a full transfer of tech and gets to develop that alleged stealth fighter all by itself, as an additional asset to the AMCA for the time when Rafales will start to show its obsoletion .
@DefenceMatrix2 жыл бұрын
Very well explained. That is what we are trying to say here too. These aircraft are good for specialised role, but making them backbone is not a practical option.

F35's operating cost is on the steep side of $36k but it's just $10k more than many 4.5 gen fighter aircrafts.... Also due to its mass production the initial acquisition cost has reduced significantly, around $80M... I believe India should purchase 3 squadrons of these aircrafts and forget the MRFA and then solely focus on Tejas Mk-II for our remaining requirements since an updated Rafale would take time... F35 acquisition would be a great force multiplier, would add crucial squadrons to the IAF and also would level up our IAF fleet in general and not to forget will send shivers to our neighbours as well.

Most aviation experts already lauded the Indian stance of not wasting heavy resources over more 5th gen fighters But the thing which bothers Indian Aviation fans most is the pace at which we are acquiring these aircraft... china can produce 50+ aircraft of different kinds per year, while India is struggling to get its production capacity at even 18 to 20 crafts per year, that too of just one kind of craft, either it's HAL and private manufacturers at fault (because of lack of skilled manpower) or it's the extensive bureaucracy in the administration at play here. Whatever the reason is, it's a curse on the strength of our armed forces.

@Defence Matrix, the examples you're giving, are literally the 1st Stealth Fighters in the history and the whole concepts of stealth, fully integrated avionics actually came from it. So, obviously the price and maintenance costs are way higher. And F-35 is costly because of trying to shove a single platform to all branches of the military. Now, the due to the high availability of open source platforms like integrated Avionics Real time Software, Of-the-Shelf SBC mission computers with all kind of ports available, high degree of commercially available composite materials, have decreased the development and maintenance cost significantly. See how China's 5th gen design working. They already have 150+ J-20 in service. Now regarding your analysis of IRST Sensors have already reduced Stealth aircraft's real advantage, well no easy way to say it, it's wrong. Check some actual technical articles about how IRST works and how they are used in military aircraft, instead of checking popular magazine articles, which tried to boost this idea when a Su-35 took an infrared image of a F-22 in Syria. 1st of all, all the 5th gen fighters have considerable amount of measure to reduce heat signature and their signature is lower than all 4.5 gen fighters. So, an IRST sensor will always be having shorter detection against 5th Gen, in normal scenarios. However, the most common mistake people made while glorifying IRST, is that they forget it's a passive sensor. So, unlike a Radar where the aircraft can control the direction, scanning direction and area, emission, search pattern, to cover huge airspace, IRST Sensors are solely dependent upon the signature coming from other aircraft and there is no way to know where to look in the Big sky out there. Your enemy can approach you in directions where your IRST is not pointing. That's why they are still a commentary sensor with the RADAR and the current generation is nowhere near to reduce the effectiveness of 5th gen against 4.5 gen. Regarding that Su-35 F-22 incident, both of the airforce knew the exact flight path of each other and the Su-35 knew exactly where to look. I still think India could have created a common platform for Navy and Airforce to develop a single Stealth fighter. Tejas MK2, AMCA and TEDBF...3 projects together is a super ambitious goal for India and a high chance those get delayed further because of each other. It's not an easy task for even some experienced countries and in my opinion, India should direct more resources to 5th gen fighters development or something like AMCA Mk1 for both airforce and navy.
@DefenceMatrix2 жыл бұрын
* F 35 is not 1st Gen 5th Gen fighter, it was developed after F-22. *IRST sensor have their FOV, in which they can scan for multiple tagets automatically, like Typhoon's PIRATE which can scan 200 targets at a time, and has a range of 160km for aircraft going cold. 5th Gen aircraft are trying to reduce the IR signature, but it's very difficult to hide, you can't hide exhaust fumes, also they carry very powerful Radars, which itself becomes a hot zone, this was clearly shown by a video capturing IR signature of F-16 and F-35, where F-35's nose was much hotter in comparison. Edit: Also J-20 is not PLAAF' backbone, just like Russia is not making Su 57 theirs. Yes IRST is not Accurate, you can't guide active missile using it, so it needs more work, but it is very very difficult to reduce IR signature of a fighter aircraft which is flying high speed with jet engine.

I like the way you think 👍 I was thinking along the same lines for MRFA... ... but honestly, I'm more worried about the here and now; the immediate need. And hence my suggestion is all about leasing Euro-canards, (as many as we can get), for 6 or 7 years, till our production lines are up and running. With a split MRFA order, we'll get the aircraft twice as fast. If one combines the Navy and the Air Force requirement, we need 114 + 26 = 140 aircraft. And if one takes what the Navy had asked for, namely, 57 aircraft, it becomes around 170 jets; a smaller number off the shelf, and the larger number made in India. Like I said, I like the way you think... you're actually thinking... and giving good suggestions. Cheers 👍

F 22 as a programme is a success multirole fighters arent gonna make you wing against near peer adversaries like China or RUssia so F 22 when was being developed was being made as a hypothetical air superiority deterant against Soviet aircrafts so I believe even if numbers are low and costs high F 22 has a upper hand in fighting its contemporaries than something mediocre like rafale and f 16 even if F 22 may never see combat against J 20 or su 57 but to have such complex and superior tech helps keep your enemies think twice before even daring to think of picking fight

Sirf operational cost plane ka aap factor main nahin le sakte, war on terror aur related operations main US military nai trillion dollars se zyada kharcha kiya in counter insurgency operations jo unkempt upgrade budgets ko kha gayi isliye 5th gen programs ko cuts karna para aur 4th Gen ko 4.5 Gen tak upgrade karke paisa bachana para. Also F-22 and F-35 programs successful hain kyonki unke pass operational fighters hain jiske against woh practice Kar sakte hain jabki baki abhi prototype ya limiter series stage main hai. Also stealth fighters exercises main 4th and 4.5 Gen ko more than 10-1 ratio main regularly pacharti hai and AESA radar non stealth planes ko more than 100km se dekh legi par 4th/4.5 Gen IRST se less than 50km se stealth ko dekh payegi thus long range se engage Kar sakti hai aur woh bhi IRST ke blind angle se.

India needs rapid increase in IAF strength.... doesn't matter it comes from indigenous Tejas mk2 or foreign fighter... We need good squadron strength atleast 300-500 more fighters in next 5-7 yrs
@prateekdhingra2922 жыл бұрын
India lacks numbers. We lack decent BVR capable 4.5 gen fighters. We need Tejas mk2 right now. Let the Chinese build intergalactic fighter with smoky engines, we need minimum deterrence first. Hindi saying, per failo utne, jitni lambi chadar

What we need is self fuelling station for Drones, continuous charging drones that can remain in air perpetually in a stealth mode or an in air carrier which can extend the range of drones and we also need to experiment with drone formations. We also need professional videogamers, which is not a comforting thought because zChina is superstrong in videogamers

Another factor to consider is the limited carrying capacity of 5th generation aircrafts. If the enemy has a large number of aircrafts in the sky then F-22 or F-35 won't make much of a difference because they carry very few air to air missiles compared to 4.5 generation aircrafts. 5th generation aircrafts are good only when backed up by other platforms including 4.5 generation aircrafts.

IAF and MOD are looking to import 4.5 gen even though they can build it locally. Thats why no government will agree to it basically because it will be used by the opposition will call for investigations into kickbacks. While the IAF keeps rejecting any local option. So in the end, its a question of who will blink IAF or the ruling party

Indian defense personnel are always wanting to have the best and that is very important, but they forget that it takes sometime to develop indegenous technologies, design skills and test platforms and the most surprising thing is that they have all been trying their level best to denegrate and denounce every Indian hardware by changing their goal posts and want those changes midway when a product is being developed. Consider how western powers have developed their weapons and technological superiority in cooperation with their forces. How they have pushed weapons that were second rate and yet they promoted them, used them in enemy theaters and learnt how to improve and enhance their capability. Alas, that is not so in India because of various reasons.

5 th generation fighters are costly and costlier to operate. Now many countries are having radar which can detect 5th generation fighter. So IAF chief has done the right thing about considering 4.5 generation aircraft.
@totoitekelcha76282 жыл бұрын
Not all radar can detect 5th gen fighter. Even if you detect it you will have a hard time locking on to it and also the time you detected 5th gen stealth fighter it is game over for you because the jet has reach a striking distance very close to you and you have a second to lock add fire your missile in order to defeat 5th gen stealth fighter.
@ImranKhan-ty6mx2 жыл бұрын
Calling F35 a failure, because operating costs are 36k/hr when as per your statement F16 operational cost is 22k/hr. That's only a 40% increase. Considering it is 5th gen that should be acceptable. Life cycle costs vs a Rafale would be even better. 80million purchase cost plus 6000 hours at $36,000/hr is 216 million for a total of 296 million. Rafale is 150 million and let's say 6000 hours at 22,000/hr is 132 million for a total of 282 million. 296 mil for 5th gen vs 282 for 4.5. Similarly for f16 blk72 it would be 80+ 132 for total of 212 million. I think your conclusion is flawed or your figure for F35 operational cost is too low, or for f16 too high.

Some capitalistic mind oppose this just because WAR IS PROFITABLE BUSINESS FOR THEM

IAF fighters are in serious trouble against the 5th generation J20 which is meant for long range and to carry extra long range missiles. IAF like other branches of the military are in sleep mode. The large number of 4th and 4.5 generation fighters are practically useless against 5th generation fighters like J20. Victory goes to those who look first and shoot first. Only the jamming pods in Su30mki are some defense against Chinese 5th generation fighters and BVR missiles.

It's not about operating 5th gen, it's a shows how behind we are in the technology curve. America has been flying 5th gen for last 20 years with all important components made in USA. Whereas till now we donot have a proper 4th gen fighter, and our one will all have all it's critical component imported.
@hdjfjd82 жыл бұрын
the core tech is available ,we are not behind in development the reason Turks have been successful in making their own drones and even 5th gen aircraft prototype is because they chose to prioritize local companies rather than depending on foreign imports and in areas where they cannot develop stuff locally they sign tech transfer agreements to bring in the tech,learn it and make domestic version's of it . Indian bureaucracy and senior military staff silently prefer foreign made equipment not Indian made also the red tape and regulations for private companies to make stuff have not been removed so how will they emerge
