USMC Entrenching Tools and Covers
The M1910 T handle entrenching shovel was a WW1 design. It was still being manufactured at the DQP and outside contractors during WW2. Several variations of the E-tool and covers were produced even in camouflage. In 1943, a folding shovel was developed with its own cover by the US Army. The Marines adopted the folding shovel for their use.

When I was an infantry paratrooper in the 82nd ABN from 80 to 83, I carried one with a pick and shovel on a straight wood handle and heavy canvas cover. They gave us an option to take the heavier pick-shovel or the new lighter folding Ames shovel with plastic cover. Most troopers and many more NCO’s chose to carry the Ames folding shovel. I could out dig and out chop them by far. The pick came in real handy in the frozen ground of Ft Greely, Alaska and in the rocky ground of the desert of Ft Irwin, Ca. I chopped lots of trees at Bragg and Alaska for overhead cover and firewood with it. I have one I carry in my truck tool box. I wish in could find another, but will probably have to settle for an Ames folding E-tool

the pick/shovel combo you speak of, was also AMES veitnam era till about '77ish. they are pretty inexpensive, i have even seen them on Amazon. i like both Etools, the straigh handle is nice for longer digging and having the pick. the tri-fold is nice for litewt and 2 hand trenching aswell as a nice seat!

As usual here, an incredible amount of otherwise hard-to-find and valuable information about an interesting niche topic of militaria collecting. Thanks!

in my opinion, that camo cover that is stamped "boyt" is a well fabricated fake, the box stitching and binding tape is not typical for boyt, I have seen many other confirmed fake items using the same stamping and stitching.

Agreed. Also never seen a Boyt 1910 shovel cover.

Antacid Absorber • thank you for pointing that out they are a lot of fakes out there we have to watch it. I hate reproductions I've been COLLECTING since I WAS 8 years old and I can tell which items are a reproduction. It is good you pointed that out to us OUTSTANDING. Thanks

@@mikehartsook5281 Agreed. I appreciate the comment as well. I hate reproductions and can only justify them by the fact reenactors need them because using genuine memorabilia in the field would be a profanity. I've been collecting WW2 USMC items for years now and even with a growing collection I'm still missing some items.

Hi, Recently I bought an M1943 US Army folding shovel that is somewhat unusual. It says US, then underneath that it says AMES and underneath that it says 1944. The unusual thing about it is that it has a serrated blade all around it. To me it looks like something the AMES factory made. It's painted olive green and appears to be in really nice condition. Has anyone heard of a serrated blade that goes all around the shovel? I've been doing some research, trying to find out something about this shovel. Can you help me? Thanks a lot, Tom

The 1st Marine Division also had M1943 folding shovels when they landed late in WW2 and became standard in Korea.

You can see members of the unit using them in 1944-45 on places such as Palau/Peleliu and Okinawa then Inchon they were equipped with many assaulting places like Wolmi Do

Don't now if you could pass on a question to Joe, Chris, or perhaps he might see this. Does the forest green paint rule apply post-WW2? I have a 1964 dated M-1951 folding entrenching tool and it's definitely painted in more of a forest green than olive drab. I suppose this would depend on whether the USMC contracted out the M-1951 tool.

I bought a French one at a local antique store but I can’t find anything on it. The only markings on it are that it’s a champion shovel, and that’s it’s made in France

Carrier, Shovel, Intrenching M-1910 for Shovel Intrenching M-1910 (“T”Handle), with high mounted billet strap securing M-1910 wire hangar for use with Haversack M-1928. Berkeley Bags, Inc., Mauch Chuck, Pennsylvania, 1942. Note: Mauch Chunk was the location of one of the trials of the Molly Maguires in 1876, resulting in the hanging of four men found guilty of murder. The Molly Maguires were a 19th Century secret society, active in Ireland, Liverpool, and the Eastern U.S., particularly among the Irish working Pennsylvania coal mines. How did Marines apply their UNIS stamps or "Invasion markings" on their equipment? Did they write it in or was there a print for it?

I have a 2nd pattern M43 cover. I'm trying to put it on a E.M.P. C.O. 1945 shovel. I can't get the shovel to fit far enough inside for the flap to close. My question is: Is the shovel not meant for that cover? OR do I need to try and stretch the cover out a bit?

Well, I've learned something about e tools from the USMC. I never paid that much attention to them. I think my e tool was made in 1945, the one I carried when I was in the USMC. We never had the T handle e tools. Ours were straight handle.

Can you help me? I just acquired a m-1910 E-Tool (cover dated 3-18) and it has some strange qualities. First, the attachment part of the cover was never attached, in fact you can see the mark that shows where it should be attached at the factory. Second, there are no US marking on the shovel anywhere. Can you please take a look at the photos and tell me why these discrepancies exist? Thanks! imgur.com/gallery/f75raRB
