Germany were not pushing forward. What they gained from the initial attack was sufficient, so they dug in. This is likely because if they attacked further, then Russia would find it far easier to handle Austria-Hungary before pursuing Germany It is also because they were blockaded, so a bunch of men aren’t much use if you have no equipment to give them in the first place, if that makes sense

It is a very long border. Germany were on the defensive, therefore in actual battles the allied forces will have been more concentrated in numbers, meanwhile the Germans just spread out evenly and try to anticipate. The German Empire had the overwhelming majority of soldiers in the western front, and Austria-Hungary + Ottoman Empire equalled Russias numbers too.
@ygloogloo
@ygloogloo Жыл бұрын
Absolutely not, when the battle of the Marne begin, germany as already lose 2 major battle on their left. So the french can concentrate troops without engaging their reserve. Germany as to take the reserve from their center to stabilize their left, the french see that and attack. On the entire front germany as 2 more army than the allies.

You can see why Germans were so upset with losing the war and the treaty of Versailles. They had already won the more violent half of the conflict in the East and were slightly winning in the west until the last few months. They were then forced to give up all their won land in the east, core territories in Prussia, pay exorbitant reparations to the Allies, and had their land occupied all over a war they did not start.

If you look just at casualties, it's easy to see why the Germans felt like they had been winning. For most of the war they were doing 2:1. It's difficult to see in raw aggregate because they faced so many oppoents and fought basically alone on their fronts. You have to look battle to battle.

These numbers are total deployed military personnel. When the numbers go up and down a lot, it's usually a draw down or a surge, not KIA changing the numbers by millions, though millions were casualties killed wounded or missing over the course of the entire war. Again, total deployed military. In the end of the video you see the Central powers *at that point basically just Germany* make a big push and then the numbers on the Allied side go way back up. Don't assume every single number up or down is a person in combat or a person being killed- there aren't dates on the video but I assume that's the last offensive that Ludendorff coordinated, the Reims-Marne offensive, which was basically Germany's last gasp and worked for about a month before it was beaten back.
