10 Best Cities for Veterans in the United States
In Today's video, we look at the best cities for retired veterans to move to. This is a list that has been requested for years. Not sure why I never did it but here it is. When Military personnel retire or retire with a disability they like to be in areas where they can make use of their benefits and be close to help and support when needed. Most cities have programs for veterans, some just have more than others and that is how they make this list.

As a Vet myself, I picked Texas. The VA isn't the greatest here (not for lack of facilities, but it takes MONTHS to be seen), but because of the state benefits for Vets. There are small business incentives, property tax reductions (if disabled), and most of the employers are pretty enthusiastic about hiring us. Besides, my ex-wife hated Texas, and me too- so my chances of having to see her again are nearly zero! Win/win. RIP to your buddy, and thank you for making the video, Briggs.

LBVA has me a little confused. I went for my physical and they started asking me all these questions as a precursor to sex change. That's fine, whatever. But I got to thinking later that maybe they have become me relaxed on elective surgery. My job requires safety glasses and in a prescription for are really a hassle. So I called to see if I could get cut or zapped or whatever so I wouldn't have to pay for $600 prescription safety glasses every two years. Nope. If I was born in the wrong body below the waist they can start to do something. Anything above the neck and I guess you are on your own?

A quick note about something you said about the discharge type. I know a lot of vets get out because they got in trouble triggered by their PTSD. For most programs, you only need an honorable stretch of service. So if you made it through a whole term and reenlisted, even if you get in trouble in your second term, your first is still considered honorable. I work with vets who got in trouble because of their disabilities and a lot of people don't know that.

Shout out to the VA hospitals in Ann Arbor and Detroit. Thank you for taking care of my Navy Dad. He fought with everyone at the civilian hospitals, and refused to do anything. Transfered him to Ann Arbor, and then Detroit, how he loved you. For the next 20 months he tried so hard, and never gave any of the staff a minute of lip. When he died, everyone stood in the hallway to pay respects as his body was wheeled. Everything just stopped. I remember a bell chiming until he left the floor. I remember crying so hard. I was sobbing because he loved the Navy, and he loved all the staff. He was so proud to serve. And I was grateful how well he was treated. USS FD Roosevelt⚓️

On behalf of all Veterans Briggs... THANK YOU!! Now for some additional comments: #10 you forgot to mention the DC VA Medical Center. The VHA (Veteran's Health Administration) considers it their flag ship medical center. The care is GREAT!! I was seen there for my 6.5 years working for the VBA (Veteran's Benefit Administration) in DC. #7 Tampa - actually if a Veteran is rated at 100% service connected disability they are eligible for a military ID card (if they are not medically retired). The process is a bit tedious to get one, but it's well worth it in the long run. #2 I worked in the Salt Lake City VBA Regional Office (located on the medical center compound) for 2 years, and loved it there. Utah has some decent Veterans benefits, but the best in my opinion is the property tax exemption. Utah exempts the portion of a Veterans total property taxes (home and vehicles) equal to their percentage of VA disability. If a Veteran is rated at 70% disabled by the VBA then Utah exempts 70% of their property taxes. #1 In my last role at the VBA Headquarters I worked closely with the Providence VBA Regional Office (when the current Director of that office was a Rating Specialist trainee in Salt Lake City, I was his mentor). That office is very pro-veteran and will go out of their way to help any Veteran in need! Personally I think you missed a big one and that is San Antonio, TX - Military City USA! San Antonio is served by the South Texas Veterans Healthcare network. They have the Audie L. Murphy VA Medical Center, with a whole bunch of Community Based Outpatient Clinics in town and around south Texas. The South Texas University Medical Center is located right next door and they share services and medical trainees rotate between facilities. Texas has some unique Veteran benefits, such as the Texas Veterans Land Board, and homestead property tax exemptions. For all 100% service connected disabled Veterans all property taxes are waived - however, the Veteran does have to apply for it via their county appraisal district. They also have one of the most generous post secondary education benefits of other states in this region. I hope all Veterans take the time to read these comments - some may find it useful.

I used to live in eastern Idaho. They had (or maybe still have) DAV vans that ran every other day on weekdays down to Salt Lake and back. For those of us who had appointments on days when the van didn't run the hospital had a hoptel available. For those who don't know what a hoptel is, it's where the hospital has one wing set aside to let us veterans stay in rooms free of charge as long as we were there for appointments and such, with food service provided. I've seen several VA hospitals and the George E. Wahlen is by far the best I've been to. It was where I had my spine fused and they had pretty much the best spine surgeon in the country do it. The care I received afterwards for recovery and rehabilitation was also top notch.

What our veterans need it the ability to access civilian facilities if VA support isn't within a reasonable distance. I'm a USN veteran of 15 yrs. with 100% service connected. I'm currently residing in Illinois (not by choice) and plan on putting this state in my rearview when my son graduates HS in 2025. My original plan was to relocate to the ST. Augustine/Jacksonville, FL. area due to family in the area. But the tremendous growth in the area since I was last stationed there (NS Mayport, 2005) has given me second thoughts. Another place I was considering was Savana, GA. Hopefully when the time comes I'll make the right decision without remorse.

I was just in both places early 2023. Florida has gotten expensive. I suggest to go inland, like around Sebring or a town near there, or the panhandle. Southern Mississippi coast is really nice.

Dude! That was an awesome video. My husband was in Panama in 1990 also, and did two tours in Iraq...discharged after Clinton downsized the ranks post Desert Storm. Never was interested in availing himself of too many services; he was one of the few to discharge without an injury or ailment, and he will never live in a big city, but you're right - this is a great resource for someone!

I am from Canada and served in the Canadian Army. I recently had to move from the region I was born and raised in British Columbia because of how awful… or rather non-existent veterans support is in BC. With my chronic health issues from my service injury I had to choose Edmonton as my new home to get assistance with my health struggles. So, honourable mention from the Great White North: Edmonton eh Thanks for making this video, Cheers.

Yes, health care is an important consideration for veterans. But, honestly, I think the cost of living combined with access to military facilities including health facilities would be the best way to assemble this list. In that regard, I'd certainly include San Antonio.

As a Veteran, I thank you. I live very close to the VA medical facility. They have always treated me well, like a rock star. Which is kinda appropriate because I was a keyboard player in the Air Force rock band (no joke). Anyway, I was working with a civilian facility with a horrible shoulder injury. It was taking months and months to get anywhere. Well... I finally went to the VA, was seen by a surgeon and he operated on me less than a week later! I have no complaints. But I had NO idea about any of those other locations. If I ever decide to relocate, I'll refer to this video as part of my consideration. Again, thank you!

Where are the biggest bases? 🤔 That could also be a clue. Maybe look into Hampton Roads/S.E. Virginia, Texas (DFW/San Antonio), Washington state. If vets also happen to be looking for GS jobs, vets (esp. with disability) have priority (extra points) in application. Yes, vets with disability can still work even if receiving benefits, unless TDIU. We love the mild winters and summer (military-only) beaches here in Norfolk area, Virginia!

Thanks Briggs! Here in Northern, CA we are improving. For example, on Bay Area Bridges as long as you have registered with the DMV as a Veteran you have no bridge toll, we have programs like Swords to Plow shares that offer lots of help like paying a portion of your rent for a time to help you get back on your feet. I have been a patient at VA Palo Alto since 2004 and I have had lots of help over the years, many of of our public transportation services offer some sort of discount for disabled vets, and if you are homeless they have greatly improved support services. But it's CA, there are so many homeless vets. The one thing I wish there was more of was Exchanges and Commissaries. As of now I only know of Coast Guard Island Alameda, Monterey, and Travis AFB. Still, we're not doing too bad up here. Can't wait to see the list for the worst 10 cities for veterans 😂

I had to go to the Palo Alto VA Hospital podiatrist to see about my my foot and ankle. Other that, they're excellent. The VA Downtown Clinic with Richard running things is the place to go for homeless veterans, with showers, clothing, washing machines and dryer, VASH,programs, food every day,etc... But COVID-19 changed a lot of things drastically😢. RLTW

Disabled vet here - Utah native and happily retired back in my home state after 27yrs in the Navy. My oldest son worked as a CNA in the VA system while going to school - vets plan their end of life care for here because the VA hospital is within walking distance of the University of Utah medical school which is definitely in the top 5 in the US. Also the Intermountain Health Care system provides support to veterans.

I lived in the area for 5 years as a 100% service connected veteran. The Puget Sound VA is so over stressed and overwhelmed they can't properly care for the veterans needs. At least thru 2012 when I left. Moved back home to the Boise area and the VA here is head and shoulders better than Western Wa. Not there fault... just too many veterans for the facilities and employees to handle. Hopefully it has changed since then.

Thank you for this video, Shared and liked! As an Army veteran who served on active duty during peacetime in the mid-late 90s, honorably discharged, and no military related disabilities (but I have a disability, post-Army) - I feel a lotta us are forgotten. Sure, I'm happy that a lotta my brothers and sisters who were injured/military related disability can get help. I know many who kind of used/abused the system to get a rating even though they are fine. This is why there is such a high number of injured/disabled among us. I keep getting told to get rated for my disability - even though i didn't become disabled until decades after my service. It just doesn't feel right. The budget is blown because so many of use felt like "we're owed". Anyway, just felt like sharing. I joined as a reservist during the Gulf War, then went active in 95. Saw the war as a contractor in 03 in Iraq.

This video showed up in my feed and was pleasantly surprised due to it's smaller size that the Providence VA ranked # 1 as I spent the last 21 of my 44 year R.N. career working in primary care at this VA. One of the programs Providence VA prides itself for and is where the nationwide homeless Veteran program began which was initiated by and formerly under the leadership of Dr. Thomas O'Toole who was my service chief. And having worked in the homeless Vet clinic from time to time you can't find a more dedicated staff to homeless Vets than the individuals who works in this clinic. So a shout out to my former colleagues who are still working in this clinic, and to all the Providence Vets I provided many years of nursing care to that made going to work every day for me a joy. 😊
