I guess the biggest issue with Kansas City is that it was never designed for airport security. When it was built in the 60s, the terminals were designed in a way so that you could literally go right from the road to your gate once you got your ticket. TWA insisted on "Drive to Your Gate" with flight gates 75 feet (23 m) from the roadway (signs along the roadway showed the flights leaving each gate). Of course, tightened security came about in the 70s and 80s, causing the layout of KCIA to become very problematic.
@susang61932 жыл бұрын
KCI airport security could be placed at the curbside doors as you enter the terminals. Then all of the stuff would be available to those flying.

@kenmohler40812 жыл бұрын
It was wonderful before the crackdown on security. Park near your gate. But it was shaped all wrong for today’s security. I also think that the Kansas City Aviation Department made it deliberately worse when they closed Terminal A. They were pushing for a new terminal and made the two remaining terminals overly crowded so people would get behind the new construction. Note to Susan - there is no space for airport security at the outside doors. The distance between car side and airside was made deliberately short to provide the easy walk from your parked car to the airplane.

I still remember being at LAX in 1972 with my mother and siblings as we were in the process of moving to Japan. The crowds were overwhelming and it only took a moment’s in attention to become separated from my family. I looked and looked for them but never even caught a glimpse. Somehow I wound up back outside and was sitting on the curb sobbing thinking they’d gone to Japan without me and I had no idea what to do or where to go…I was seven. Not one traveler asked if I needed help! Finally a security guard came and took me to an office to wait while they found my mother. Over the last five decades I’ve travelled through LAX numerous times. Must confess, it’s still so hard to manage that sitting on the curb to cry seems like a reasonable response 😂 I try to avoid it unless I’m on a flight that does not require changing planes.

This list includes the 2 airports where we avoided crashes due to great pilots. First FLL where we were already across the runway threshold when the pilot added power and pulled up for a go-around. For those not knowing, the threshold is the end of the runway with the stripes on it the pilots of bigger aircraft use to target the landing. When we were going around I saw an aircraft stopped on the runway having overshot an exit to a taxiway. Second was LGA. We were again across the threshold which I should not have known except the plane was pitched so hard to the right due to crosswinds, I could see out the window across the aisle from me to see those same runway markings. Now someone said it must have been the parallel runway, but the wingtip was clearly visible just above the runway. The pilot executed a snap roll and basically threw the plane onto the runway. I have never experienced a harder landing. I had to find a flight to DC which was not easy as the entire east coast was shutting down due to the weather (my boss and I barely made it out of Montreal to get to LGA). We did make it home that night. My boss later confessed that he had been to Canada a few times before and every time had trouble with transportation to get home.

@@clash3583 Philippines. MNL (or NAIA to us) was one of the world's worst airports according to an online survey from a little while ago. When I was there in 2012 to go to America, queuing was a pain in the ass, the immigration lot are snot-faced abominations and Terminal 1 looked pretty archaic that it better served as a caveman's watering hole. And I'm being polite because this channel is ad-friendly. In fact, the one of the only few that are tolerable. Luckily when I traveled out-of-country again, it looked pretty decent and clean. The only problem I encountered was still the long queues but other SEA airports have this problem too like KLIA or BKK. Sometimes it was hot because of all the people plus the sun's heat passing through the glass panes but overall it was much better than years ago. I wish they add those moving walkways like in Phoenix next. Sadly, those loud Chinese tourists are already here and the conditions here might deteriorate again.

Nicely done and thank you. I did most of my business traveling from about 1980 until 2010. Some years I was on the road 150+ days/ year. I’ve been through about every airport in the U.S. I lived outside of New York City in 1986 and 87. Then, Newark was the farthest airport from my home, but I drove there because JFK and LaGuardia were such hell-holes. At least Newark was fairly new and had easy parking. Looks like now New Yorkers have no good options. Things have flipped in Florida. Miami Intl. was such a disaster in the 1980’s everyone I knew (including me) would fly into Ft. Lauderdale or even West Palm so we could avoid Miami. I now live in SoCal. I had to use LAX twice in the last few weeks. Total nightmare, made much worse by what seems like never ending construction. My favorite of all here is Ontario. Never too busy, easy access, people are pleasant, and I never feel rushed. The airfares to the same destinations (compared to LAX) are usually higher, but I gladly pay the difference! I avoid SantaAna/ John Wayne primarily because of their night time landing curfew. I have been stuck several times in connecting airports, because of delays we could not land before the curfew time went into effect. That sucks!

They are building a Crenshaw Boulevard Subway or light rail system to go downtown shop for the stadium so that the airport is not affected. A couple of exits away? No way. People will be driving to the new stadium with the 105 freeway or they 110 Harbor Freeway and that's it. What's more the Opie is not mentioning that a light rail system to take people from to terminal from a nearby substation joining the rest of the light rail system is in the process of being built right now. So LAX is about to have the same public transportation convenience that San Francisco or JFK have.

I actually spent four days in Los Angeles before flying back to New York.😀 I haven’t went to LAX in three and a half years, but I can tell you that LAX isn’t an awful airport, but it’s definitely not as beautiful as airports like SIN and DXB. Also, LAX was prone to delays and my flight from Los Angeles to Sydney was delayed for about 10 minutes. It was raining a little bit in the LA area.

I must say my top two for personal experience is ERW and BOS for crappiest airports. ORD made the short layover worth while with an AWESOME deli restaurant in Terminal C that had the best Reuben ever.

How does LGA fair better than JFK? As a native New Yorker who lives in Brooklyn and lives equal distance from both JFK and LaGuardia, I would much rather fly into and out of JFK and would pay the extra cost to do so. Flights into and out of LGA are always delayed, I've NEVER departed LGA on time, NEVER. Being in LGA makes me feel like I need to shower about two times just to get that grime off of me. And let's not even talk about the all day traffic on the roads that surrounds that airport.

I live in Fort Lauderdale and always fly out of FLL. Over the years, they’ve expanded the airport and added a 2nd runway. They’ve also expanded some of the terminals, added food options, and are building a new international terminal which will open in about a year. Respectfully, I disagree with you that MIA is better. Last year, due to a delay in my flight coming into FLL, Delta routed us to MIA for our trip to Spain. MIA IS TOO BIG, disorganized, and the traffic and getting around the airport is just terrible. I have flown out of MIA a couple of times over the past few years only out of desperation. I much prefer the smaller FLL. I will grant you one thing ... the food options are not like what you’ll find in MIA or ATL, and if you’re flying late, that’s more of a challenge. Hopefully, as FLL expands beyond the 20 million passengers they serve today , the airport authority will respond.

I knew they were working on re-building LGA. I haven’t been there in probably five or six years and back then it was awful. It was under destruction, the car rental shuttles would just let you off randomly in the middle of the road and you had to try and negotiate your way across a busy airport road to get to the terminal. And don’t even get me started on the roads that went through LaGuardia it was like somebody took a handful of string and just threw it down and said well there’s our road plan. I used to fly United and the terminal looked like a derelict building fit it out with some random crap that they found at a flea market. It was disgraceful.

I work in the airline industry and have ground support operations at MCI and MSY. Fully agree with both assessments. I see a lot of comments about not adding DFW, IAH, or ATL. Actually, those 3 aren't too bad, (have ground support operations at DFW and ATL). Just a lot of people. All three of those have a very functional and efficient tram system as well. PHL is actually nice. Just busy. Not annoyingly busy. PHL actually has a huge food court. I go to PHL often, and was just recently there to audit my GSE. However, you really needed to add DEN to this list. While the airport is well equipped (bathrooms, restaurants, good signage), it's just 3 huge barely connected long corridors! They have moving walkways, but most times people dont know how to use them, (stand on right walk on left). Coming in on B14 from IAH via a A320, but your connection to EUG is at B83 on a CRJ200, and you have 40 minutes from wheels down to pushback?! GOOD LUCK! Realistically, that 40 minute layover is about 15 minutes because of taxi time, deplaning, then boarding your next flight. Mile High city? Should nickname DEN the mile long airport! 15 minutes to haul your ass from one end to the other, fighting slow moving, cant walk straight, fumbling with phones, dont know how to use walkways, inconsiderate casual travellers. Not cool. Dont even get me started on CLT!

As a former airline manager at JFK, EWR & STL during the 1980-‘90s and an avid air traveler, I think you did a good job of outlining the culprits and their problems. Airports have two distinct sets of problems; A) the issues that the traveling public see and have to deal with. B) the problems behind the scenes that the employees face every work shift. Airports are strange, dangerous worlds. Employees who are working in the terminals are exposed to the problems in both the front and back of the house. In front, they’ve gotta deal with the same crap the passengers experience. In the back, in there restricted employee only areas are problems of a different magnitude. It takes quite awhile for an employee to learn to juggle the myriad tricks and fixes needed to be able to just do their jobs. I’ve found it takes a certain type of person to be successful at doing an airport job and those friendship bonds are unique to people sharing the experience of accomplishing that job. If you’ve got it in you, it’s a fun job and great place to work. But… you can’t be soft, or one who easily gets stressed if you are an airport will eat you up.

There are hundreds of different jobs at airports supervised by different companies and government entities. So, it is not surprising that there could be a great deal of confusion behind the scenes.

I'm going to have to disagree with you about O'Hare Airport. It's very easy to get to and from this airport. The expressway goes straight to downtown, there is public transportation (CTA) that gets you to almost any place in the city, and O'Hare has plenty of parking. The signs are easy to follow. O'Hare even has it's own train system that gets you to and from parking spots and different terminals very easy. O'Hare is a very good airport. I do agree with the TSA part though, they can be a pain in the ass.
@daltonhunter48005 жыл бұрын
All you need to know about O’Hare is that it was either the takeoff or landing spot for nine of the top 10 most delayed flights in the U.S. in 2014. It’s overcrowded, and if one flight gets delayed, it creates a nasty domino effect on later flights.

O'Hare is very confusing for someone from out of town. It takes a long time to find good parking and a long time to get from the lots to the terminal and vice-versa. Online it advertised $10 per day parking but when I got there I was told all of the $10 spaces were full and I had to settle for $17 per day. Even though there were covered spots open in the parking garage, the attendants there forced me to park on the uncovered roof. The elevators in the garage weren't working properly on all floors so I had to lug heavy bags up and down stairs. Once you finally get to the terminal it is pretty congested for my taste and yes, TSA is not good there. It does have good flight prices and lots of direct flights, which is why I drove from Grand Rapids to Chicago to go to Seattle, but the airport experience is awful. If Midway Airport is available as an option, I recommend taking that instead as it is smaller and closer to downtown than O'Hare. Detroit Metro Airport is much better experience too.

They also had the greatest bookstores where you could get the latest paperback of your favorite detective-thriller author. And you could drink that fabulous Cuban coffee ! But I learned to stay overnight in Miami and fly out the next day if I were going on to another international destination, or if I had check-in luggage, because sooooo many disasters had happened when trying to change planes (bags left behind or broken into or planes delayed and connections missed). In LatinAmerica there was a rumor that there was a "Mafia" in Miami that X-rayed the luggage and broke in if they saw anything interesting.... who knows? I understand they spend all day saying the same stuff. But, I would think they would understand that written directions are non existent and that most people flying into their airport are only connecting to another flight and are not from nyc

Robert Mosher I went through LGA and I was shocked at how gross the airport is. They were using TSA bins to collect water leaking from the ceiling. Not to mention some mold spots
@user739585 жыл бұрын
Also, currently there is no train link to LGA, at least Newark and JFK have a train link. JFK is no picnic either to travel through, and United has a 70% stranglehold on flights out of Newark, making flying out of Newark more expensive.
@raymondmuench32665 жыл бұрын
Of the 3 NYC area airports, LGA is the worst in terms of ground transportation, EWR the worst vis a vis access within- clearly a pre-TSA design-and JFK a nightmare if you’re changing airlines. Done ‘em all. Done ‘em a lot. Each has problems. Welcome to life.

When I was a kid, the only thing I remember about the Vegas airport was the quarter one-arm bandits lined up everywhere in the terminal. Dad put in a quarter and hit the jackpot - 5 bucks! That was awesome. (In case you’re interested, headlining on the Strip were Richard Pryor and Bobbie Gentry! So you guessed it - around 1966 or ‘67!)

@@vamoscruceros No one here is really sure why they are replacing it. The it is using the same runways, just on the opposite side from where the current terminal is. The problem is they never thought about an access road or exit from the airport, so it is going to be a nightmare until they have one built.

I recently flew into FLL from Cancun. Actually, I was impressed with the kiosks that scanned my passport and my face to verify, and the luggage acceptance mini-counter right past that area, where I was able to check and drop my bags for my outgoing flight. I was forced to use FLL rather than a direct flight back to ATL due to scheduling conflicts, and found it to be surprisingly stress-free for my incoming International flight (I have yet to experience ATL coming in from International.) I agree with you about the lack of good food options, however. Oh, and BOS does have those nice rocking chairs. I took advantage of those quite a bit my two times through there. I did take an Uber to it, and if there were no elevators, I sure am glad of that! Whatever would I do, as a retired lady who always overpacks?! No elevators, seriously? What century is this, again?! And how is that even Disability-compliant according to ADA guidelines?

Back in the early 90s, I flew overseas via Newark and thought it was a good airport. Then in 92, I returned from Europe and the baggage handlers were on strike. We overseas travelers had to exit the security zone in order to fetch and carry our luggage to the domestic terminal for connecting flights. The bus to the domestic section was always full so most of us walked over grass and divider walls to get there, dragging our luggage along. Never been back to EWR since.

Currently LAX does not allow taxis, Uber, Lyft, or local shuttle buses at the airport. You have to take a bus to a staging area about 5 miles away. Who can drive to the airport? Hotel and rental car shuttle busses. Also, private autos.
