I live in Rankin County on the outskirts of Jackson which is in Hinds County. Yes, I would not advise anyone to move to Jackson in its present condition. It was a great place to live in the 80’s and 90”s. On the other hand, the surrounding areas are still great and growing. Beautiful homes, friendly people. I’ve been here over 30 years. Raised my family and they are still here. It’s been heartbreaking watching Jackson go down. Much has to do with the local government. Please don’t ditch Mississippi because of this. We have many poor areas, but still have a lot of super nice affordable areas to live that never get mentioned.

Jackson puts such a blemish on the rest of the state and it's so sad cause all the areas surrounding Jacskon are really nice. All in all I've spent 15 years in Salt Lake City, 16 years in Phoenix Arizona, and 5 years here in Mississippi and this is by far my favorite and I've never done better for myself. I'm here to stay and never going back!

@myrebornlilliebeth5164 nice! You must be talking about the miskkellys furniture store. We looked at a few houses right around there when we were house shopping. Ended up in the castlewoods subdivision near the country club. I moved here for work and honestly wasn't too thrilled about the idea at first due to the negative reputation Mississippi has but after arriving here, it ended up being nothing like I imagined and we fell in love with it immediately and have never seen folks so friendly and welcoming! My parents who are retired come to visit frequently and they've fallen in love with it too. They are actually kicking around the idea of purchasing a second home here so they can be closer to the grandkids. You have a Merry Christmas as well!

I'm a former OTR driver and I occasionally had to deal with St. Louis so I'm not at all surprised to find it on this list. St. Louis is so badly run down that if a tornado hit it, I don't think anybody would be able to tell where it hit. I pretty much only drove through Jackson and sometimes spent the night at the flying j there but other than that I didn't deal with the place but Some of my former neighbors are from Jackson. I never heard anything good about it from them. I can't imagine living anywhere in the southeast, especially around the Gulf Coast region without air conditioning.

I used to live in Houston and as the city grows, it gets worse. The traffic, sprawl, lack of mass transit. In the past, city councilmen used to say that Houston didn’t need mass transit because we have the automobile, and the automobile represents freedom; the freedom to go anywhere, anytime without waiting for a bus or train like they do in com’nist countries. Yes, the weather takes getting used to, without a/c, forget it. My wife grew up without a/c and she said it was miserable. No, I’m not moving back.

There's mass transit. I rode the bus to work every day. Also, they built a train but nobody uses it. Don't get me wrong though. I can't stand Houston because of the Democrats. High crime (leftist judges letting repeat, violent offenders off over and over), high taxes, high fees, high water bills, flooding (promises to fix it if we give them more money (typical Democrat MO) but they never do anything. Crumbling infrastructure...because, Democrats. We escaped 3 years ago and I don't miss it AT ALL.

St.Louis being rated 4th reminded me of the scene in “National Lampoon Vacation” where Chevy Chase and family were driving through St. Louis, got lost and asked for directions. Sorry to hear about Anchorage. Anchorage may be dying out, but don't be afraid to visit Alaska.The Last Frontier State should be on your bucket list. I never felt unsafe walking around the downtown area during the day. Anchorage is a great place to start and finish your Alaska journey. Visit Seward, Homer, or Soldotna only a few hours south. Or go 5 hours up to Denali National Park. Alaska is massive.

Here's what I hate about videos like this: most of it is just low-hanging fruit. I grew up outside of Buffalo and I still have family that lives in the Rochester metro area. "It's cold", "it gets a lot of snow" are just lazy statements. Both cities have so much to offer. Architecturally speaking, Buffalo is hard to beat. Not only does it have the most buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright outside of Chicago, but many of its buildings are architectural treasures. There is also culture in Buffalo, with the Albright-Knox Museum being one of the finest showcases of modern art, the Burchfield Penney Gallery featuring America's foremost watercolor and charcoal artist Charles Burchfield, and Kleinhans Music Hall, which is an amazing place to take in a concert. Not to mention Shea's Performing Arts Center which hosts a lot of Broadway shows, and The Irish Classical Theater Company which is theater in the round. Downtown Buffalo has been transformed with the redevelopment of the waterfront known as Canalside, and it's a great place for history buffs, foodies, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Rochester also is no slouch when it comes to architecture, not to mention that companies such as Kodak, Xerox, Bausch and Lomb, Paychex, and Wegmans (only the best grocery store in the country and top 5 places to work) are headquartered there. Also, the Strong Museum of Play is located there and is a fantastic, family friendly fully interactive museum dedicated to toys. Plus, with both the Erie Canal and the Genesee River, their waterfront is being revitalized as well with walking trails. But no, all you can talk about is how cold these places are, how snowy they are. The cold and snow tends to bring out the best in people with neighbors helping neighbors. Xerox and Bausch and Lomb are no longer headquartered in Rochester. I don’t miss the weather there, but do miss the friendly people and Wegmans. When I visited Buffalo about a year ago, I was surprised by all the run down or abandoned buildings. It had been a while since I was last there.

When I joined the Army, my first duty station was Ft. Drum. Being from Wisconsin, thought the winter wouldn't be any different. Way wrong, lake effect weather is a real thing. Was there when the Blizzard of 93, 29 inchs of snow in a 24hr period. Watertown was already looking rough then and it's only about 25,000 in population. Winters really beat this place down.

Jackson MS has less property crime because there isn't much to steal. But seriously, having lived in Vicksburg from 1986 to 1991 (due to my dad's career in nuclear energy that started at PNW's Hanford), that was always the big town to go to for shopping (when Metro Center was still open). It has fallen a lot since then, but I would bet its suburbs are doing better.

Jackson is only 20 miles from Vicksburg, but distance doesn't have to be much to get an entirely different price structure. Madison has the highest house prices in Mississippi and it's only 6 miles from Jackson.

We were all worried about the City's future. Was hard hit. @@MoonLightOnWater1 weird, I'm from FL so I have no real bias or nostalgic lense, but St Charles county all seems like one pretty nice suburb, all of the west to southwest area seems pretty affluent and the south eastern part seems like a nice hilly rural place that feels pretty homey if you enjoy that vibe. I'd say all of those areas are pretty comparable in terms of "niceness" to where I'm from on the coast at least.

I've lived in the greater Rochester area for 43 years, and I can chime in. I can agree that now city sucks and crime is bad, but the suburban area around it (especially in the eastern part of Monroe County) is growing very well like it has for the past 30 years. The median home value might be $202K, but we pay one of the highest property tax rates in the country, which doesn't make owning a home there cheap, but around the national average. To illustrate, I pay $6,000 per year on a home that is worth $190K on a quarter acre of land in the suburbs. A lot of homes near Lake Ontario that are worth $1M or more are paying around $25K - $30K per year in taxes.

Do you believe the schools fail or is it the family values? Is it the local police or sheriff's office? I work with convicts in Jacksonville, FL, Duval County. I have lived in many locations in this country. I earned my Master's degree in Addiction Counseling while I was in Omaha. I had been to Florida before and came back here for the population. The pay.....I don't want to work at fast food with a master's degree. I have three goals that when completed will find me, with my cats, in a northern state that appreciates education. You are so right about the need for public transportation! Where l am working in a remote town in western Texas about 2/3 of young adults don’t have a car and a lot have left because they can’t get places and there’s nothing for them to do. With the price of cars, insurance and maintenance young adults (Gen Z) aren’t buying cars. My own son got his because his older sister gave it to him at 23. He would take the bus or ride his bicycle to work.

Houston, to start with, it’s a swamp, low water table; therefore, the bugs and stink that goes with a low water table. Then, consider the worst traffic you’ve ever known, double it. It gets hit by terrible rain and hurricanes every year. It’s HUGE; so, driving everywhere, and you’ll be forced to drive, is a soul killing pain in the bohunkus. Just driving, to bypass the city, on your way to somewhere else, is ridiculous.

I was just in Rochester a week ago visiting my mom. Kids under 18 are the problem for the most part. They have been finding ways to use a screw driver, open up a Kia and then joy ride it into a store front. Also a lot of car thefts by under 18s is common. Mostly in the city area like Alexander street… lake Ave… some of the usual suspect areas. Sucks. I live my home town and politicians are the problem there. Allowing it to happen.

I love Buffalo. One of my favorite cities, full of beautiful neighborhoods and the population is growing. Another thing about Buffalo is it still has a vibrant nightlife in the city with lots of restaurants and bars open late, compared to other medium sized cities that close down at 10pm. The neighborhoods in the core of Buffalo are very walkable and full of beautifully restored homes and historic commercial buildings.

Certainly Detroit has a lot going for it lately, but the stats (population decline, poverty rate, and high violent crime rate) are some of the reasons it appears on "worst of" lists. Briggs is very stat-focused to the detriment of things (beauty, sense of place, authenticity, good areas in an otherwise depressed city) that can't quite be captured by statistics. One problem I see is that big cities are so sprawling that the statistics do not tell the story of different neighborhoods within a city, some of which can be amazing places to live and are basically small cities themselves.@@scotbeaton4451

I don’t think Anchorage is dying but it may very well be declining some. The majority of Alaskan businesses including oil and gas are there, 2 military bases are there and their airport is a huge shipping hub for the country. It’s not a huge city but I would think that offers a lot of stabilization

That's not to say Houston doesn't have things going for it. It does. However, crime prevention isn't big on their list of priorities. People are leaving Houston because of crime. Same thing is happening with Dallas (Not the entire DFW Area). Every city has crime, but when a city has a high PER CAPITA crime rate and it isn't being addressed that's a real problem.

I used to lived right around JBLM. Dupont is safest to live and it’s beautiful. Also check out Yelm and Steilacom. I lived on the south east side of Lacey in 2020 which was nice at the time but I’m not super sure about the area right now

Ironically, Hartford motivated the City Beautiful movement of the late 19th century (e.g., Olmstead green spaces, boulevards, etc.). Around the same time that Mark Twain lived there, tourists would put Hartford on their list of things to see (along with Niagara Falls, NYC, etc.) just to behold it. Hartford's present decline can be traced to the same cause as half the cities on this video, i.e., off-shoring our manufacturing jobs to China (Connecticut used to be the machine tool capital of the world, plus United Technologies Pratt & Whitney, the brass industry, time pieces, hats, etc.). Soon to be followed by insurance, as Briggs stated, due to tax-and-spend state government stupidity to buy votes.

The borough I live in the population has grown almost 6% in the last few years. It’s just 40 miles from Anchorage. It seems that everywhere we go we see building, including commercial and business properties. Just this week we went down a road we haven’t been on in a few months and there is a huge business building being built now. People are leaving Anchorage because of taxes and other regulations and moving to this borough. Even doctors that have offices in Anchorage are opening satellite offices here. There is a big medical building area that wasn’t even there 5 years ago.

I was born and raised in Rochester, NY. I moved to Texas a little over two years ago - first I lived in San Antonio and now Austin. I would never consider moving back to Rochester. Even the nicer areas of the city are riddled with property crime and the police have their hands tied by a corrupt Police Accountability Board and poor local governance. I live in Houston and it's hotter than ever. You can not survive without a/c. The weather has got extreme as well. It no longer just rains, it either doesn't rain for 3 months or it rains so much that you have to move your belongings upstairs. It takes an hour to get anywhere here as well. If you love gridlock, move to Houston. Oh and the hospitals never recovered from the pandemic. Be prepared to sit in a chair for 24 hours if you go to the ER. It also seems that everyone is pissed all the time. I live in a nice burb and angry white guys pull guns on people here in traffic on a regular basis. Other than that, HEB is great.

From what I saw of Anchorage, there are some pretty scary hobos downtown, and some kinda sketchy-looking neighborhoods, but also some nice ones, and a nice trail along the shoreline. I moved from a rather rural area to D.C…. D.C is one of the few American cities that actually has an efficient public transport system, and I’m grown quite fond. Not much things are better than getting hammered at a bar and taking a short risk-free train ride home!

@@ryanbon2414 with us we only have one car and it’s not the best car. Like it has a flat tire and can’t be fixed until Friday so we are just stuck at home until we can get the tire fixed. Also I am a SAHM so it’d be nice to have a car to get around in when my husband is at work, or like I mentioned at least a bus system, to get out of the house more. My husband and I are gonna look into a second car with tax money though, I think.
