How to Remove and Replace Door Actuator Mercedes W163 ML230 ML270 ML320 ML350 ML400 ML430 ML500

We took this video to show you how to remove and replace the door lock actuator on a Mercedes W163. This is the first generation M- Class. You can purchase a brand new one for about $200 on eBay OEM. Sometimes the problem is internal sometimes it is an external spring. In our case it was internal so basically it is not fixable.
Mercedes Dealers charge hundred of $$$$$ to replace it. It is not the easiest procedure but hopefully the video will help you fix the problem. If your door cannot be locked or unlocked this should fix the problem.
This procedure should work on the pre-facelift and after the facelift models. The only difference should be the removal of the door panel with some minor differences:

What about fitting an after market door actuator fitted to the rod going into the old lock. It would save a lot of time.

Great video, thanks. I hate to fool around with those airbags. One question I have is do you have a video on how you repaired the broken clip holders on the door panel? I too have one broken, which I broke while removing those white clips. In my case, I have both the upper and lower broken parts. They fit tightly together with the part of the clip that's glued to the door panel, so some kind of welding solvent could work for me. Or, the glue that holds those clips to the door panel looks substantial enough but I have no clue what it is. I'm thinking that if I could glue it together with that door panel glue, I could mark exactly where that clip is on the door, and should the actuator or regulator need replacing again, I would know exactly where to insert my panel removal tool so I put pressure on only the white clip and not the glued clip holder. Thanks again for a great video. I have 3 failed actuators to replace, on my ML, and the dealer already did the 4th.. I did a calculation and figured out the MTBF for the actuators was less than 30 hours. Mercedes should be ashamed to design such a flawed component, the the engineering team that did this should be fired. Electro-mechanical devices should be designed for a 2000 hours MTBF at least.

Jim Busse I have replaced 7 door lock actuators in 19 years of ML330 ownership & the 8th door lock actuator has started machine gunning this month on me. Driver door actuator has been replaced 2 times & will need a 3rd one soon. Horrible design.

You need to give the instructions on how to put it back together. Instructions are needed to replace the key.

You need especial tool to take out the lock T20 (T-20) Torx/Star Driver (it’s not the 4mm to my 2000 Mercedes-Benz ml320)

I think I'm having that issue on a 2002 ML500. Are referring to the bolt that holds lock cylinder in place? I tried a long 4mm allen but it doesn't seem to fit into the head of the bolt/screw. Unfortunately, I don't a long enough T20 to try it. I'll have to order a set.

I need to replace my actuator but i can't get the door to open from the inside or out. I managed to get the panel off from the inside but how can i break the actuator or get it free to open the door... any suggestions?

+JamesNDelilah Pinckney Since you removed the door panel try to reach the linkage for the door knob and pull it with pliers or pry it with a screwdriver. They tend to get stuck. Which door is it?
