Of all the videos on the subject, this is the only tutorial series that actually showed me how to do the terrain brushing. I feel like every other tutorial is just overcomplicating things. Some just talk without showing anything, some start from the half-baked scene and some start by shoving plugins down your throat. This is exactly what I needed as a beginner, thank you!

Thank you, this tutorial was just the right blend of in depth and hands on. It took me a while to find a tutorial that I could actually hang onto, but at the end I wonder why it's such a 'task,' to paint textures. It seems like a thing that would almost be a default paint option, seeing as it was in the Farcry Editors and most other drag and drop building systems. Either way, worked like a charm, much appreciated!

So I'm working a few weeks now with ue4 and I always see that there are 3 or 2 types of materials used in a layerblend. My question here: Can I use 10 textures in one layerblend and work with those? I kinda tried it but after I use more than 3 or 4 textures the landscape I'm using it on switches to the default color and it won't compile. I stuck with this problem right now.

@gustavojendiroba3 жыл бұрын
Amazingly educational video! The best tutorial I've seen. One question though. When you have the textured tiling problem, why is it solved by making the mapping scale bigger?
@mone93663 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tutorial. You used a blend layer for the roughness but you used the same roughness value for both grass and dirt, so the video does not show the roughness blending. I used a different roughness for a dry sand and a wet sand, and when painting the terrain, the colors blend well (the wet sand is darker than the dry sand), but the roughness does not. I can see a hard line on the shininess between the 2 areas. That line corresponds to the internal circle of the brush. The external circle used for the falloff has no effect. So I am wondering what's the purpose of adding a blend layer for the roughness if it has no effect. (I am working on a VR scene, just in case there is some limitation)
@StevenHarmonGames3 жыл бұрын
PSA for those who use more than 2 textures, I used 8 and noticed my terrain having patches missing textures with checkered patches. To fix, just set sampler source to shared:wrapped. This is probably a texture memory issue or something.

I finally found one thing that was so much clearer, user friendly, intuitive and easy to use in the cry engine than in the UE... Cryengine painting of a terrain was so easy and... Actually it was everything but that clear or user friendly, STILL better than this contrived way of painting materials on a landscape (materials, not just textures).

@cupcake-gameclip51294 жыл бұрын
i started with ue4 with little to no knowledge about programming and game dev concept, just to get the hang of how game dev works, you learnt a lot of terminology in gamdev along the way, so the skills and knowledge you gained can be transferred to unity. i'll choose UE4 first and later Unity. gonna stick with what I feel comfortable the most at the moment.

Yeah but we want to use actual good complex materials for terrain layers, not just textures in one material. Come ON EPIC!!! Come on, Crytek had that right 15 years ago!!!
@MeMe-pn9qk3 жыл бұрын
i think you forget to tell me about that course you have, maybe mention it another 8 times
@jojolafrite903 жыл бұрын
In Cryengine you could use layers to pain the landscape depending on a lot of things elevation, angle, etc. And every layer was an actual MATERIAL. Not some weak no good textures IN ONE material that can't be as complex as the material the textures are even from. Only beginning with UE5, and UE in general, but already, it's the worst thing I've seen yet. materials are already complicated as shit compared to ANY renderer for any 3D software, or Blender's Cycles, or even luxrender, not hard to have PBR materials in any of these softwares. But here can't even fucking paint a fucking landscape??? Do better Epic. That is really fucked up.
@jojolafrite903 жыл бұрын
Wait, it only lets you paint your landscape with layered textures not materials?? WTF? And it's contrived and unclear, come on Epic! Even Crytek was much better and clearer on terrain painting.
