Never got into this game. I think a big reason wa this game was 50 cents to play at the arcade when most others were a quarter. That's a big deal when you are a kid with only a few quarters in your pocket!

There's a controller code for a menu where you can select which beast you want to be each round. Right when you turn on the system hold down these buttons- Down-left,A,B,C. When the title screen comes up press start. You then will have a menu where you can select the beast you want for each level.

There was another code where you could access the game's options screen and one of the options was to increase the bars of health up to 5 instead of the default of 3 but I can't remember which code that was unless it's the same code as mentioned above.

This game was mind blowing when it was brought home. Even with all the down grades. Graphics were perfect the sounds were good too. The only thing wrong was animations and size of characters.

The best version of Juuouki/Altered Beast (MD) is ultimately the revision that we got in Sega Genesis Collection (2006), it fixes a massive lot of the music data to help players hear the tracks in their intended form (most notably the Title Screen/Stage 03 track, "I'll be Back": Did you know that the PSG channels were supposed to witness extensive use here?) and compared to the initial builds that we got on the Megadrive this was also more tame due to its significantly better handling of Megafire Controls; I do find it interesting that this port often gets overlooked, there is no reason why it couldn't be officially utilized again after 2006 and it does raise a lot of questions on this particular subject, many of the other titles in SGC that had notable bugfixes also had their modified ROMs get neglected in a similar manner and one would think that the superior edit would be permanently repurposed down the road, especially given that these are all First and Second Party titles that have no legal nor licensing handicaps that would prevent such a course of direction.

Two things that I would have been very happy to see fixed were the restarting of music after a sample played as well as the odd decision to change the pitch of the music as compared to the arcade. I'm glad to see at least the former was done.

I have this on Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis it’s like Sega Genesis a console system I used to have and I remember the Werewolf, Weredragon, Werebear, Weretiger and the Golden Werewolf advancing to stages and defeating Neff on Altered Beast and that’s how I remember.🇺🇸💯👍

I was just playing the arcade version in this same collection last night, lol. The arcade version has like 6 enemies on screen at once sometimes, but other than that the genesis version is near identical.

at 2:20 the Player Icon on top changes to shirtless to reflect powerup. at 2:39 the Player icon changes back to shirt with black hair now despite the bigger powerup.

@@jasonlee7816 You received or purchased yours after Sega changed the marketing strategy and son. When the Genesis first came out it wasn't doing so hot and they changed the pricing, marketing, etc including changinging the included game to Sonic the Hedgehog 1.

None of the console ports of arcade games really did back then but to be fair the arcade cabinets had better speakers, more resources, etc. If you look at the TMNT II the Arcade Game for the NES and the original arcade you can see a big difference as well.

Not a great game (it was an early Genesis title after all) but I do love the atmosphere and the grittier feel in an epoch where home console games (especially on the Famicom/NES) were more light-hearted in general. Also it's still fun playing as two.
