I know, and it's so sad. It's not like they *couldn't* have improved on this game. They had a position of unquestioned supremacy atop the genre of "virtual pets that kick butt." No other game ever challenged them in this area, but instead, they gave it up to become another pokemon copycat. It's one of the great tragedies of gaming that Digimon World 1 never had a proper sequel.
@TaskMaster58 жыл бұрын
They still aren't even remotely a 'Pokémon copycat'. Seriously, the only things the two franchises seem to share is the fact they are monster training franchises. But the similarities truly stop there. The 'virtual pet' schtick is cute but it wouldn't last very long. Seriously, look how short lived Monster Rancher is in comparison to Digimon and Pokémon, and Monster Rancher stuck closest to the 'virtual pet' mantra as it gets.
@mytruepower28 жыл бұрын
I'm not going to argue with you about business models. That's not the topic I brought up. Yes, they are a frigging copycat of Pokemon. Let's start with a game like Digimon World Dusk and Dawn. Where do I even begin with this? 1. Monsters are captured and trained in small parties. 2. Fighting monsters have precisely one frame of animation, with all other animation exclusively to represent their attacks. 3. The combat is decidedly turn-based. 4. Each monster has four stats, apart from HP, MP and their potential level. 5. There's a "farm" where you can keep some of your digimon for various purposes. 6. There are two game "versions," with complementary titles, and with some monsters being version-exclusive. 7. Each digimon has only a few moves that it can use in battle. 8. More than one digimon can fight in a battle at once. Just about the only difference I can see between the two franchises now is that they have different storylines, with Dusk/Dawn having more of a Battle Network-type storyline, but apart from that, freaking *everything* is stolen from Pokemon. I don't really mind when a game series steals concepts and ideas from another game series. What depresses me in this case is that Digimon apparently had *no faith whatsoever* in the strengths of their own Gameplay style. As for Monster Rancher, it was *never* short-lived. It's got 14 video games with future titles planned, *and* it had an anime series (though, admittedly, I thought "Digimon Adventure" was better.)
@TaskMaster58 жыл бұрын
Ok, we'll go through this point by point because seriously, you picked one of the very few Digimon games that actually had multi versions when it's a massive outlier. Not to mention these points aren't points. They're grossly generic game mechanic tropes that most every JRPG ever follows. 1. Monsters captured/trained in small parties: Every JRPG has some method of recruiting team members. In the VAST majority (as in virtually every single one) you do not capture Digimon. You recruit them in a manner similar to any other JRPG or you collect enough of their data to reconstruct them so you can use them on your team. Pokémon did not revolutionize how team recruitment works.Also there's a distinct different in Digimon and Pokémon in that Digimon are not slaves. They join humans willingly because they genuinely see the benefit of human help. Pokémon gradually evolved into this kid friendly mentality but before it was literally 'kid enslaves animals'. 2. 1 frame animation anecdote when attacking: Clearly was due to the minimalistic approach to Dusk/Dawn and isn't the case in other Digimon titles. Dusk/Dawn took the franchise back to the roots of the virtual pet days where Digimon started. Very basic attack animations, Digimon reverting back to eggs and needing to be re-raised frequently, needing to be trained again, etc. Not exactly a good example to try to make your point. Attack animations in the old virtual pets were pretty much one frame animations. 3. Combat is turn based - Okay? And how does this prove Digimon is a copycat when other games have long since existed with turn based combat before Pokémon was even a thought in someones head? 4. Monsters having 4 stats - This isn't actually correct. Digimon have basic stats like health, attack, defence, etc but there are other stats like their resistances you need to focus on. This is a key element in Digimon as how you raise their stats effects what form they can achieve when they Digivolve where as Pokémon generally have little care in how you level them. Only very few Pokémon actually care what a stat is at before they evolve and has an impact (namely Hitmon family). If anything Digimon was quite a bit more creative in their stat structure. 5. Farm to store extra monsters - Pokemon, Digimon, Monster Rancher, and Dragon Quest Monsters all share this feature. Its a feature that makes sense to the context of the game. Having a 'farm' isn't some flagship feature that makes Pokémon unique and any future game that has some kind of 'storage system' for excess party members means they ripped off Pokémon. 6. Multi versioned game - This is pretty much the only Digimon game that did this. It's not even a Pokémon only thing to do. Megaman NT Warrior did twin versions, Dragon Quest Monsters 2 did this. In fact, Digimon and Monster Rancher are the only two in the genre known to NOT normally do this. They have main line installments, not twin versions. In this case Dusk/Dawn are exceptions and not milking people like Nintendo's been doign for years (So I'm GLAD Digimon doesn't really do this). 7. Only has a few moves - This has been Digimon since the beginning and actually fights AGAINST your point that they are copycats. Pokémon tend to have upwards of a dozen or more moves in their move pool. In Digimon, each form of a Digimon only has 1-2 moves at any given time (Until later games liek Cyber sleuth opened up their move pools a bit more). So how does only having a couple moves each make them copycats? 8. Multi-Digimon can battle at once: Ok, this is actually something Dragon Quest Monsters for Gameboy did FIRST over Pokémon. You had a party of up to 3 monsters at a time and they fought all at once. Digimon eventually adopted this in Digimon World 2, but then went back to 1v1 battle system in World 3, then went back to 3 v 3 in Cyber Sleuth. Pokémon actually copied when it comes to having multiple monsters out at the same time. Games borrow ideas from each other ALL the time. Pokémon isn't UNIQUE. It borrowed almost all it's game mechanics from already established games and put a slight spin on them. Digimon and Pokémon are drastically different. Digimon started right out of the gate tackling themes and concepts that Pokémon wouldn't touch on for years (Specifically importance of teamwork, dealing with death and loss, morality, love, etc). This is both in the games AND the show. Pokémon started out as a more mature game masked with kid friendly designs and such but quickly became a very by the books kids franchise, which is sad. Monster Rancher has always been the black sheep. It has a lot of installments but it still isn't popular. Not compared to Pokémon or even Digimon for that matter. Hell, I'd wager that Dragon Quest Monsters is more well known globally than Monster Rancher. Sure, it had a few seasons of an anime (Which I watched and loved) but it clearly didn't win out. It has a dedicated fanbase (which I'm fully on board in) but that's the only reason it still gets a release here and there. So yeah. You're cherry picked game (Dusk/Dawn) isn't the copycat you think it is. Nor is the franchise as a whole.
@mytruepower28 жыл бұрын
***** "They're grossly generic game mechanic tropes that most every JRPG ever follows." Final Fantasy doesn't, Golden Sun doesn't, "Tales of" doesn't, Phantasy Star doesn't, Shining Force doesn't and Kingdom Hearts doesn't. That's almost every JRPG right there. "Every JRPG has some method of recruiting team members." However, not every JRPG allows you to recruit a *potentially-infinite number* of team members, nor does almost every JRPG have monsters as your team members. These two points in conjunction with each other, and the others, form an obvious pattern, and you don't deny that these are points of commonality. "In the VAST majority (as in virtually every single one) you do not capture Digimon. You recruit them in a manner similar to any other JRPG or you collect enough of their data to reconstruct them so you can use them on your team." This is plot-based. Gameplay-wise, you might as well be capturing them. Yes, I realize that in Digimon World 2, they join you freely like a Chocobo, but the method of making them join you still involves tossing something at the digimon, then fighting/weakening their group. There's an awful lot of similarities there, you have to admit. "Pokémon did not revolutionize how team recruitment works." On the contrary! Pokemon used an entirely different team recruitment method than had been previously used. Not only could you potentially recruit as many team members as you wanted, up to 150 distinct types, but even within those types, the stat balance and stat gains per level differed, meaning that my geodude might be stronger than my opponent's geodude, or weaker, if it had worse stats-per-level. Some pokemon would have stat balances of a completely different type, favoring strength over special attack power, or vice versa. This allowed for potentially endless variations, even though none of the recruited party members were specifically necessary for the game's story. By contrast, other JRPGs, even really good ones like Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger still had distinct roles in the story for each character that you recruit, and this only really changed in games where character recruitment was minimal-to-nonexistent, like Final Fantasy 1, or Dragon Warrior 3. The scope of the monster recruitment mechanic in Pokemon made it stand out from all of its competition, which is good, because the movesets of any individual pokemon were of a pitiful size. "2. 1 frame animation anecdote when attacking: Clearly was due to the minimalistic approach to Dusk/Dawn and isn't the case in other Digimon titles. Dusk/Dawn took the franchise back to the roots of the virtual pet days where Digimon started. Very basic attack animations, Digimon reverting back to eggs and needing to be re-raised frequently, needing to be trained again, etc. Not exactly a good example to try to make your point. Attack animations in the old virtual pets were pretty much one frame animations." Wrong. The virtual pets had *two* frames of animation while attacking, not just one. Only pokemon refused to animate its monsters at all. In fact, considering that Pokemon has one image of the monster when you're commanding it, and another when you're facing off against it, you might almost say Pokemon does more in this area. "3. Combat is turn based - Okay? And how does this prove Digimon is a copycat when other games have long since existed with turn based combat before Pokémon was even a thought in someones head?" You're still approaching these points only as separate cases, rather than separate aspects of a cumulative case. Don't do that, or I promise that this is not the only pattern you'll miss out on seeing. If you can't recognize cumulative evidence of patterns, it's going to make problems for you in other ways. In any case, you don't deny that this is a point of commonality. "4. Monsters having 4 stats - This isn't actually correct. Digimon have basic stats like health, attack, defence, etc but there are other stats like their resistances you need to focus on." Pokemon have resistences too; they're just static and based on the element type of the pokemon. "5. Farm to store extra monsters - Pokemon, Digimon, Monster Rancher, and Dragon Quest Monsters all share this feature." Quite a concessionary statement on your part. You don't deny that this is indeed a point of commonality between the games. It therefore serves as evidence of the larger pattern of copy-cattitude that I'm seeing here. "6. Multi versioned game - This is pretty much the only Digimon game that did this. It's not even a Pokémon only thing to do." Yet it *did* do this, and you concede that Pokemon did this, then Digimon did this. It is therefore solid evidence of this pattern. "Megaman NT Warrior did twin versions, Dragon Quest Monsters 2 did this." NT Warrior is an anime and manga, not a game. As for DQMonsters2, it was released in 2001, a full 5 years (enough time to develop a video game) after Pokemon, and just because one video game copycats Pokemon doesn't mean no one else can do the same. But in any case, one thing we can both agree on is that version exclusivity is a lame attempt to milk the fan base; at least when recent Pokemon games do it. "7. Only has a few moves - This has been Digimon since the beginning and actually fights AGAINST your point that they are copycats. Pokémon tend to have upwards of a dozen or more moves in their move pool." Incorrect. Those are only the *potential* moves that a pokemon *can* learn. No pokemon can know more than four moves at any given time. "So how does only having a couple moves each make them copycats?" The reduction in the number of moves draws them closer to Pokemon, and further from Digimon World 1, where a wide range of moves were available for each digimon to use, and if one had mastered enough, they could be switched out. This point therefore remains valid. "8. Pokémon actually copied when it comes to having multiple monsters out at the same time." Undoubtedly, but DQMonsters didn't *also* have all of these other similarities I've mentioned, or I would also accuse Pokemon Gold and Silver of ripping it off. And in any case, this is *another* concessionary statement. You admit that Digimon had moved away from this mechanic, and brought it back, after Pokemon did it. Therefore, the evidence remains firm. "Digimon started right out of the gate tackling themes and concepts that Pokémon wouldn't touch on for years (Specifically importance of teamwork, dealing with death and loss, morality, love, etc)." No one's arguing against how they *started out.* My point is that they started out fine, then threw it away to rip off pokemon. "Pokémon started out as a more mature game masked with kid friendly designs and such but quickly became a very by the books kids franchise, which is sad." Well, at least we can agree on that. "Monster Rancher has always been the black sheep. It has a lot of installments but it still isn't popular." That's why it's worth playing. So anyway, aside from perhaps point 4, you've essentially conceded all of these points, which provide a cumulative case in support of the claim that Digimon is copycating Pokemon.

I don't really like how the "best" way to play the game is to just scold him randomly, looks like there were some kinks in the programming. It just seems weird to just yell at your partner for doing the things that you're telling you to do. I used to have my digimon start training on one thing, go to the bathroom for the longest time and get back to it thinking the longest they stay on it the better X'D I also used to think that having them poo on the floor (and not in the bathroom) would cause it to evolve into the poopy digimon thing :'p (and I was really stressed out because of that, because I got the poopy digimon so many times XD)

You can either end up with Agumon or Gabumon at first, depending on how you answer the questions at the very beginning of the game.

Because this game is like the dark souls of monster raising games 🤣 it's hard to understand a lot of the mechanics. A good example would be the "bonus try" that he keeps doing. I stopped attempting those because I found out that there's a chance that you'll 100% fail them and I didn't understand the process. You'll see also that he's also yelling at his Digimon a lot for no real reason. We didn't know about this stuff when the game first came out; this is after years of digging into it that we learned that that was the most efficient way to build your Digimon. Personally I still don't like it, it seems a little excessive and I really wish it was explained in the video.
@HonestFarmerLigue1Fan2 жыл бұрын
@@zacziggarot Yelling a lot at your digimon will increase its bitterness and hatred. with enough luck, your digimon can digivolve into some badass evil digimon, of course you cannot neglect basic needs like HP, MP, speed, brain, offense, and defense. also, weight is also important I don't use this tactic, though. Too cruel for me, even if it's just a game.
@zacziggarot2 жыл бұрын
@@HonestFarmerLigue1Fan he gets a greymon in the next episode. a digimon that I can get without scolding or praising my Digimon at all. The real reason that he's yelling at the agumon is to affect the "bonus try" I think

@Gem Hunter I'll take the v-pet games like world 1 and next order over cyber sleuth any day. Cyber sleuth has branching evolutions yeah, but it all just equates to: level up more, evolve/devolve, and level up more. I ended up putting cyber sleuth down because I kind of lost track of where my original Digimon was and my mains got lost in a sea of Digimon that I got from scan data. I like how in Digimon World there's a bunch of Digimon that you have to starve your partner in order to get (mamemon, metalmamemon, giromon, etc) and you can get two different Digimon depending on if you have too many care mistakes of not. Evolution in those games just feels like it's an earned reward. In cyber sleuth Evolution resets you to level one so it's kind of a hindrance sometimes
