That stairway level is possibly the most frustrating part of the game. If the ghosts knock you down three times, the game's over and you gotta start over. And there's 22 floors in total to add insult to injury. If you're lucky enough to own a Game Genie, you can pass the stairs without taking damage from the ghosts.

And you also have to press the A button repeatedly in order to move forward (unless you have a turbo controller)! That's possibly the dumbest control scheme I've ever heard for a video game aside from the SNES version of Batman Forever, in which you need to press the Select button to use the grappling hook!

The Sound Generator slows them down. The Anti-Ghost Suit gives you extra protection. The doors either have nothing behind them, a ghost, or a Power-Up for the suit. There's really no foolproof way to beat this stage except perseverance and having an NES Advantage to speed things up.
